It's raining here in California...they were going to have to drop the Southern from the song. So for the first time in over a year it was...... to the woodshed for a smoke.....

One of the great pleasures I that I rarely get to enjoy about these great cigars we smoke is how beautiful they smell.......when burning. I'm a wine guy...been in the business all my life, so I'm all about the smell, taste flavor...blah bla....aka... oral orgasms that these little sticks give us!

But I just don't get to enjoy the smell because I'm the one who's always smoking......except when it was my fathers birthday or Xmas, for over 30 years those two nights I'd hand him a churchill. My father always finished dinner first, so while the rest of us were eating and drinking he go grab a coffee and the cigar.

The memories of that first whiff when that heavenly smell floated over the table, it always made me pause and think about how incredible that smell was.......and that I only get to ride this pony twice a year.........that sucks!

It's like missing out on one of the great pleasures of fine tobacco. I always loved that first wave of heaven to come over the table and hit me...... I'd just stop and inhale that beautiful smell.

Living in the U know where, you just don't walk into a room of beautiful cigars burning.....that often. And living in the boonies where I do, your chances are not good.....

But a while back.......a long while back because it must have been raining......I reviewed a SLR Regios....because it was raining and I needed a smoke. After smoking the cigar for a while I must have gone back in the house for something, when I came back to the cigar in the shed.......what a smell. I know I ducked in and out a few time after that.....I'm not quite crazy enough yet to start playing hide and seek with my cigars....and if I do I'm still not crazy?

So the flavor of today outside is damp forest, with a heavy dose of woodshed. Cigar wise for me, I'd call it old Upmann.........that's what I remember Upmann's tasting like.

I don't want to be out in the woodshed to long......Mag 48

A cigar I bought on first smell...the first box I opened smelled like my nose was right in the soil. For the record I'm not a cigar box sniffer.....you know what I mean. How many times a day..........never mind...

I did walk away from the cigar a few times......maybe 2 days of rain is making me crazy....but that beautiful burning tobacco, fresh air and just washed forest smelled great.

Yeah, sometimes I'll light up a cigar in my office and go outside for a few minutes, that or when I've smoked one in the garage.

I go back and wow, the aroma is amazing. For some reason I don't really catch it as much otherwise but when I do, I love it.

Understand about how the particular circumstances you describe could bring a specific smoke to mind.

i have always loved the smell of stale cigar smoke ... never been able to figure out all the fuss about getting rid of the smell ... air fresheners , air purifiers etc etc .

Going in and out of my sun porch it gives me a chance to clear my senses . When I come back in its like a fresh blast of smoke and it's nice to pick up the nuances of the different cigars from night to night.

I knew I was in the right place when I signed up here!

I love the smell of a pipe but never quite got the hang of smoking one. It just doesn't suit me. So I figured I would try my hand at pipe tobacco incense. I do pyro as a hobby, so I figured I would use the same concepts that we use to make the colored stars. Fuel/ oxidizer/ binder. I used finely ground pipe tobacco, 10% KClO3 (potassium chlorate) and 5% dextrin as a binder. Wet it and form it into cones and let dry well before lighting. It could use a little tweaking to get it to smoulder a little more evenly but it's a good starting point. Just use your favorite cigar tobacco instead of pipe. (don't bother trying KNO3, (potassium nitrate) it doesn't work near as well as the KClO3)

Something I've been doing that's a little easier is just using an oil incense burner/censer. Put pipe tobacco in the bowl with a little light unscented oil like mineral oil. I'm not sure how good that would work with cigar tobacco though. Obviously you don't get the burning tobacco smell. just the essence of the warmed tobacco fragrance.

Good luck.

Great timing on this thread!

My missus often joins me outside when I smoke, and comments on the smell with comments like - "that's sweet" ..."strong".... "mild" .... "chocholately".... "coffee".... etc....she has the most finely tuned nose ever!

The other day I was smoking an NC (I smoke about 3 or 4 a year) and she commented, just from the aroma of the smoke alone - "THAT doesn't smell like your nice cigars,... What is that?"

You're right through, I rarely get to savor the sweetness of aroma and sensory appreciation that not smoking brings.

Usually smoke by myself so I also don't usually get to enjoy the aroma of my cigars. Love when I smoke with a buddy or in the garage. I usually visit the garage several times when I'm done.

Good post. I just discovered the same thing with my daughter. I was organising my smokes on the weekend so she was looking at them. I got her to classify them by smell and she was excellent at it. Totally amazing sense of smell

Love the stories guys. Many times I catch myself thinking of my uncle smoking his stogies and the sweet aroma and sometimes wonder what were they smoking? Also very cool Rob that your Mrs. sits out with you while you smoke. That's awesome!

Can't belive the timing on this.

Was just outside enjoying a Monty #4. As I sat there I was thinking

how much I truly enjoy a fine Habano and everything they encompass.

My 4 car garage is my man cave. Well, at least 1/4th of it is. In the daily smoke thread I post pictures of cigars I smoke and 95 percent of the time its there. The smell of it during and after and in the morning makes me so happy to be a cigar smoker. I revel in the smell, I look forward to making the smell.

Salut to good cigars!

Wonderful stories everyone! Nothing like the smell of a great cigar to allow yourself to relax, reflect and slow life down a little.

This X's 10!

I am also one of the lucky ones that get to enjoy a cigar on my deck with the girl and she very much enjoys the smell of a fine Habano. She'll join me with a glass of her favorite red and we can relax together. For those of you that have someone that enjoys the smell or cigar smoke, you know what I mean... It makes life that much easier...

Great story! Thank you, I'm another one not bothering with air fresheners and so on. We smoke for the smoke I guess is one way of saying it.

Last summer i decided to head to beach where my buddy and I smoke. Our schedules did not allow sharing the cigar experience that day but I met him rushing back to his truck as I walked back to the beach. The cigar he was smoking smelled as good as any I have smelled. It was a Perdomo. I tried smoking a few and did not enjoy the flavors much which was a large disappointment given the smell that day.
