dicko
G'day all, Do you insure your cigars? Is it worth it? Any recommendations? Personally, I have about $3000 or so (replacement value) of cigars in a small esky. Would have thought a fire or theft would be biggest risk factors. Thanks
Dimmers
Yeah a valueable part of your home contents so should be insured if you can. Will probably already be included in your home policy (though may be capped at some amount), so worth getting out the terms for a read and then contacting your insurer for a chat. Worst case may be a (hopefully small) addition to your existing premium.

bolivr
Dicko, mine are itemised on the home contents policy as 'cigar collection'. Same as you, about $3k value. The insurance company was not really fussed about it; if I try to claim I guess it may be tricky to justify the value with receipts and so I take some photos when I remember to. It gives them an excuse to increase the premium I suppose...
westg
Look at insuring them under a collection policy
westg
Just as long as it isn't the same insurance company you have life insurance in and have checked the non- smoker option... That,s why you look at a collection policy..
bolivr
Just as long as it isn't the same insurance company you have life insurance in and have checked the non- smoker option... Ergh, yeah I bit the bullet and signed up as a smoker on the life insurance, it's a rip off because they lump us in with the two pack a day nicotine addicts
OZCUBAN
I asked about that recently their definition of a non smoker was not having a cigarette for 12 months Nothing was said about Cigars

Drguano
You have probably heard the one about a lawyer who smoked his cigars and made an insurance claim that they were destroyed by 'fire'. The insurance company then had him brought up on charges of arson.
Ken Gargett
had several very good boxes destroyed by a dodgy humidor. had an 'accidental damage' policy which covered that but had to fight the scum at CGU for 12 months. ended up in front of the ombudsman and won 100%. more fun than you can imagine. CanuckSARTech
Ergh, yeah I bit the bullet and signed up as a smoker on the life insurance, it's a rip off because they lump us in with the two pack a day nicotine addicts I asked about that recently their definition of a non smoker was not having a cigarette for 12 months Nothing was said about Cigars Practice is that you smoke anything tobacco you are classified a smoker. I filled in 3 cigars/month on a couple applications and was quoted smokers premium on every one... Wife has standing order to immediately trash all cigars if I die... I guess it depends on which country you're in, and/or which company. Had this done years ago. Admitted to "up to 3 to 5 cigars a week", approximately, I believe it was. The insurance company ended up still having me as a non-smoker. They based / base their results on how much of a nicotine level is in your blood once the blood-work comes back from the lab. Thanks On a lighter note, in Canada, for 3000 dollars, you would only have enoug money to ensure a box of Esplendidos. Ahh, canadian taxes. Gotta love em, NOT.

AndrewNR
Haven't seen an esplendido's box, But if they're anything like the Behike or some other premium cigar boxes I'm sure they're almost worth it

I agreed to file as a smoker even if I declared smoking 2-3 cigars a week max. Figured it was not worth it being accused of fraud if something happens. He called me back last Thursday to mention that the status was ideed based on the amount of nicotine that will be found in the blood / urine test, so I might end up being considered a non smoker after all - which I was until last August when I discovered CCs

By you declaring you smoke cigars if no nicotine shows they can only deny you a preferred rating and rate you as a standard non smoking human being. SurpriseMVP
i despise insurance companies. Sorry as it sounds that you have had a negative experience. I sell sleep. I can cover just about anything that worries you and the well being of your family. You need a new agent
polarbear
Having bought my first home I was wandering around it the other day and realised the only thing I have of real monitory value (besides the house itself) is my cigar collection. The replacement value of it would easily reach into the $10,000 mark and that's without taking into account some of the older ELs, discontinued stock and REs/Jars. Can anyone recommend an insurer who would be prepared to cover my collection in Australia? If someone broke in and stole/destroyed my LGC jar or RA898s I would cry for days. Or broke in stole your cigars and put the tobacco in roll your own cigarettes. Walk by the pub and see someone splitting open a Cohiba sublimes on the sidewalk.
