Jnaube Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Alright, so I often see in,any posts people saying that they never smoke a cigar straight out ofthe box, that they let it rest in the humi for a long period before they taste it... Me, themimute I open the box, I have to smoke one. What's your take on this?
maverickdrinker Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I smoke one and then freeze the rest. Then, it is when I feel like smoking another one. No real hard and fast rule for me.
hdryder Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I smoke one and then freeze the rest. Then, it is when I feel like smoking another one. No real hard and fast rule for me. Same
David67 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I always smoke straight out of the box. A few reasons, I'm an impatient bastard. By smoking one straight away I get an idea how they have improved from when I got them. I don't have enough cigars to be putting boxes away for years!
Jnaube Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 I smoke one and then freeze the rest. Then, it is when I feel like smoking another one. No real hard and fast rule for me. That's exactly what I did this W-E. Smoked one... Froze 100!
Wil Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I let them settle in the humidor for at least four weeks before trying. I don't freeze
Ophidion Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I smoke them after a few hours of getting back to room temp then I put the rest away. Revisit after a few days/weeks/months to see how they are coming along.
Rye Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I can't resist! Always smoke at least one, and if it's good, smoke'm till they're gone. They seem to keep making more...
Lotusguy Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I let them settle in the humidor for at least four weeks before trying. I don't freeze This
dangolf18 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I try one...if it's really harsh, I'll let them sleep for at least a month. I think it's always wise to try at least one off the bat.
BMack Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I always let them rest for some period of time...cigars generally ship waaaay too wet to smoke. If I buy them from a BOTL, I might smoke it sooner, depending on how they feel to the touch.
Jnaube Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 I let them settle in the humidor for at least four weeks before trying. I don't freeze You like to live dangerously?
polarbear Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I try to leave them to rest for a couple of weeks as transit time is atleast 7 days Most of the time I cant though. Ive got some Monte 520's on the way that I wont be able to keep my hands off
dicko Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I always smoke one and sometimes more if they are great first up. Then ill leave the rest for a couple of months while they acclimatise.
Wil Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 You like to live dangerously? Yep! My cigars are kept at 65/65 (give or take) so beetles don't really worry me.
Bcrowell Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I always put them down for at least 6 months. I do from time to time open the box and smell them just to let them know I'm thinking about them.
stargazer14 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Are we talking cubans here? Why freeze again? I do often try one a day or two after arrival, then realize they probably could do with some rest.
Orion21 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I smoked one and then put them down. I smoke what I feel like, so if they've been in there for a week, month, year etc it doesn't matter. I also don't freeze. The only holes I have had appear in a cigar were from a custom NC stick bought in Manhattan. It sprung holes before I even got home. Suffice to say, their humidor felt like a sauna. I keep mine at 60F or less 24/7.
stargazer14 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I have gone through a lot of cigars, only holes or beetles I've ever seen came from NC's. I dont store them with my cubans.
Jnaube Posted March 5, 2013 Author Posted March 5, 2013 Yep! My cigars are kept at 65/65 (give or take) so beetles don't really worry me. Just want ro put all the chances on my side.
SerieT Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Are we talking cubans here? Why freeze again? I do often try one a day or two after arrival, then realize they probably could do with some rest. i believe its to kill any chances of beetles from hatching....i freeze as well due to my paranoia of those bastards hatching again
Ptowncigar Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 No freezing, I keep the box open just a tad in the wine fridge for a couple days. Then close the lid and smoke in a few weeks. Half the time I give away a few before I even try one.
1LegLance Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 You guys are way more reserved than I am...over the years I have become way more laid back. I always smoke 1 within minutes of cracking the box. SInce most of my orders are multi-box then I might wait a few hours to the next day to get into the other boxes. I do make notes on how long I think I should wait...if I wait Then of course I cut that time in 1/2 to try them and see how my notes were compared to reality. Just part of the fun.
