Puros Y Vino Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I agree but can the look alone tell how good the cigar is? A PE may taste better than a PSP, no? Potentially, yes. Nothing wrong with PE stock. There is a preference among many, for darker wrappers.
El Presidente Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Juan Lopez Seleccion Number 4 PRA DIC 10 One of my favourite cigars. Immensely rich. Post here and contact the lovely Diana immediately to secure HQ (2 boxes) $ 375 USD
tempbond Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I agree but can the look alone tell how good the cigar is? A PE may taste better than a PSP, no? That's what I've always wondered about. Is the HQ, PSP, PE designation only based on colour and "oilyness" ? Since a production run in Cuba involves the same tobacco being rolled by a bunch of rollers only for other workers to mix their production at the extreme and assemble cigars according to colour, the only constant in a box of cigars is the blend. So nothing garantees that a PSP isn't plugged or that it tastes better than an HQ or PE ? Sorry for posting this here, but it was something that crossed my mind a few times...
Dbone Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Its my understanding a wrapper does not need to be dark for PSP. Simply strong aroma, oily wrappers, near perfect consistency of wrapper shade and length, also a higher QC sampling for construction. However, with that being said yes PE to PSP goes lighter to darker. Personally, I prefer lighter shade wrappers.... sharper flavored delivered in my opinion. Find a lighter shade PSP box and that's something special.

There used to be a post explaining it. I can't seem to find it though. Cigars are boxed according to wrapper shades though. Someone sorts them by color then they go to get boxed.

When I grade, I grade on wrapper quality, oil content, construction, aroma at cold etal. I find oil content (in wrapper) to be important. To me, oil = flavour and if you age your cigars it tends to bring an extra dimension.
