dicko Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I sourced a few singles of what, for me, was my white whale. I'm glad I found them. I smoked this cigar ROTT, I couldn't wait! Construction was good, felt a little hard an wrapper was good maybe a little dusty. Nice reddish tan colour. Although I was concerned the draw might be tight, the draw was perfect, just slightly restrictive. Aroma at cold- tobacco, slight barnyard. Initial puffs- aged tobacco dusting itself off. First third- very, very creamy. Almost like fresh milk rather than cream. Some hints of raspberry although that could be my mind suggesting things after seeing stewed fruit in reviews of this. No spice at all just smoke through my nose bits of cream. This is really creamy and I'm loving it. 2nd third- milky flavour remains but some straight tobacco and some woody notes come in. This lasted for about 25 minutes. I struggled picking out flavours here but I knew something was coming, and it did!! Final third- wow! Now come the flavours, menthol, roses, wood, rig tobacco, cream! Some spice pops in too. The last half an hour is amazing, so complex! Overall- evolved throughout. Started cream, went into tobacco/wood and finished on a high with cream, menthol, roses and spice. Top 3 cigars I've ever had and so glad I got to sample this little piece of Cuban cigar history.
backslide Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 A beautiful cigar to say the least. I've only smoked (1) and sure wish I had the opportunity to smoke a few more before I kick the bucket.
maverickdrinker Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 great review. I really wish Habanos SA would bring this back to regular production. Such a fantastic smoke.
Lotusguy Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 They are well worth their reputation. Sadly, I've only ever had two of them.
Fuzz Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Great review, Dicko! Wish I had bought more of these to keep around, but I could only afford a few back then, and now they are all gone.
Guest rob Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Good stuff, Dicko! Glad to see you found it and smoked it.... rather than saved it.... They're meant to be smoked, after all!
Puros Y Vino Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Welcome to the "I smoked an RA898 Club" Dicko! Cool review. I found the RA898 to be an exceptional cigar. The hype has been justified. 95+ point cigar IMO.
dicko Posted November 9, 2012 Author Posted November 9, 2012 Glad to be part of the club, truly enjoyable :-)
Ophidion Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Great review Ill have to review one when my 02 box comes in. Really looking forward to it
CaptainQuintero Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Nice pick up and review Dicko! It's always great to hear someone has got their hands on something they've been searching for!
kiwiman911 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 thanks for the great review. I saw box at my local B&M and some of my friends and i bought some, my buddy smoked his...but it was soooooo thight I did not dare smoke mine, so I still have one of those famous RA 898 but I'm afariad to smoke it for fear of being disapointed but when I read reviews like yours I feel like just lighting it up to see. Well maybe one day
