Ghabanos Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 There was a post about Aussie not likening pbj. My question is why do you guys like Vegemite so much?? Friendly question.
bolivr Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I guess Vegemite has been around for generations and our parents fed us Vegemite when we were very small. Delicious on toast under scrambled eggs!
chr0nic Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 EDIT: ^^^ in a nutshell It's an odd taste; I was raised on it (like most Aussies- the stuff's been around for generations) so it's probably something that has stuck with many, many Australians from their childhood. I mean, it's not horrible, but it's not instantly enjoyable either. Plus, there are rules with Vegemite so that it doesn't taste terrible- lightly spread it, usually you'll apply plenty of butter, don't take a spoonful and eat it straight from the jar lol. I've had people look at me smoking a CC and ask me what I enjoy about it. I say the taste, flavours etc. then they have a puff and tell me I'm crazy. I guess it comes down to taste being very individual- including Vegemite
AntiVirus Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I don't really know why we like vegemite so much. I guess most people in Australia have been raised on it, and as bolivr said its been around for generations. It's especially delicious on toast or in a sandwich with cheese!
Tebinium Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 One thing to note: Nanny state is looking at adding it to the list of products to have the salt level reduced. That will definitely change the taste. Talk to people in the UK about how it affectedHP Sauce!
thecrowder Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Being new to Australia I was pretty skeptical about vegemite at first, but, after learning that it goes best with butter and only when you use it lightly, I find it quite enjoyable. That being said, it still throws me off that Aussies love to toast banana bread and then bathe it in butter and honey, or, take spaghetti in a can (i.e., chef boy'arde) and put it in between 2 pieces of bread and call it a sandwich.
Overproof Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 UK has Bovril. It's almost identical in taste and colour.
Wil Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 , after learning that it goes best with butter and only when you use it lightly, I find it quite enjoyable. ^ This Love the stuff. It's just what you're used to. My missus is a Brit and much prefers marmite. Give me vegemite any day.
OZCUBAN Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Hi all I am not one of them,I think Vegemite is completely vile in every way,MARMITE VEGEMITE,BOVRILL its all the same to me,now HP sauce now your talking Teamed with a nice Pork pie mmmmm OZ
HydroRaven Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 One more thing: Australia doesn't believe in ketchup. They have tomato sauce instead.
edlye Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Bovril and Vegemite were great low cost options when I was a poor overseas student in Oz. I used them as breakfast bread spreads with a bit of butter, a tiny bit goes a long way especially on warm toast. A plus is that my housemates don't smooch on them (when I buy a jar of fruit preserve, it barely lasts a week), they can't believe I actually like the stuff. UK has Bovril. It's almost identical in taste and colour.
Tan1801 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 One more thing: Australia doesn't believe in ketchup. They have tomato sauce instead. Pass the dead horse . Back on vegemite, I like the savouriness and saltiness of it.
dicko Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Love a light spread of Vegemite with butter on toast! And toasted banana bread is great too, the missus made me some this week :-D
tmac77 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Being born and raised a brit, my first solid food was marmite on taost. Way back in the day doctors would give it out to new mothers along with orange concentrate meant to assist in the weaning off the T*t process. As a marmite guy I lay it on thick. For me vegamite does not pack the same punch.
Scdalak Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 " I said do you speaka my language?? He just smiled and gave me a Vegamite Sandwitch"...
canadianbeaver Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 ^^^^^ I was just thinking about this!!! One hit wonder LOL
Scdalak Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 ^^^^^ I was just thinking about this!!! One hit wonder LOL LOL Lisa, I know right?? Now cant get it out of my head...
Puros Y Vino Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 LOL Lisa, I know right?? Now cant get it out of my head... Now imagine it being sung with Ken's voice.
mazolaman Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Reminds me of football in the 70's. Half time, soaked to the skin in uncovered stands, the only relief was a cup of hot Bovril..followed by 45 mins of mullet wearing footballers chasing the long ball on a muddy pitch. Saw a culinary delight here in Estonia the other day...Tinned Beef In It's Own Juice....mouthwathering...
MIKA27 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Hi all I am not one of them,I think Vegemite is completely vile in every way,MARMITE VEGEMITE,BOVRILL its all the same to me, No surprise there mate, you're a Pom (No offence meant) now HP sauce now your talking Teamed with a nice Pork pie mmmmm OZ I must admit, I love HP sauce also, have bottles of it at home. Glad you said 'Pork pies' and not minced pies, I'd dis-owned you as a friend. On the topic at hand, I LOVE Vegemite provided it is spread on piping hot buttered toast. Love it! My dad has even used it in cooking such as adding it to his awesome Mushroom gravy. (Don't knock it until you try it!)
asmith Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Vegemite needs to be laid on thick on a well buttered slice of toast. Those people just putting a light smear on are not real Aussies.
