Wil Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I know right, actually looking after everyone from cradle to grave regardless of race, creed or colour. It's the most unchristianic, anti-freedom thing ever. It's basically communism, the hundreds of billions it costs to run could be spent on so many better things, like wars, the exploration of space or propping up dictators and despots in far away lands to protect us from the evil ones. Too right! Loved the quote from Aneurin Bevan in the Australian commentary: ‘No society can legitimately call itself civilised if a sick person is denied medical aid because of lack of means.’
rfenst Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I suspect the people getting the most upset for/against the matter are the ones who actually couldn't care less about the individual's involved in 1972 and just want to use the issue as a springboard for their own soapbox. So, anyone who has concern over the issue has an agenda? That just marginalizes the differing opinions of those on both sides of the issue who feel strongly. Under that line of reasoning, it is better not to a strong opinion on the matter. Sad.
mazolaman Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Well, I'm hoping the closing ceremony is as enjoyable as the opener. We've really enjoyed catching bits of the games as we have trundled round Finland and Estonia. I suppose it helps that GB and NI have done better than we could have hoped for, with every new day bringing another gold. I read an article that calculated the GB team had spent £175 million between Athens and Bejing, where they won 19 golds...roughly speaking, each gold cost about £9million....... While that doesn't sit too comfortably with me, it would be unfair not to acknowledge how many athletes have devoted 4 years solid to prepare for this, many of whom get not much at all in funding, and do t for the love. I read with interest This chap's story, a nice happy ending to a post, inspiring, and I hope he does well!
canadianbeaver Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I liked the description on CBC radio yesterday about the closing ceremonies today. They said there will be 8-10 minutes of dancing and celebration for the next summer Olympics in Brazil. And the dancers will be all scantily dressed so be sure to watch it CBC is Canada's national radio station that is conservative, news, music and programming with discussing issues at length etc.
