CaptainQuintero Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I'm not sure what is going to happen, it's all been pretty hush hush but I was thinking last night what I would do. Personally I'd make it have a music theme, four geat pillars around the pitch with British guitar talent on them, Eric Clapton, Slash, McCartney and Brian May. All blasting out hits from the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who etc etc I guess something could be happening on the stadium floor, David Bowie and Ozzy Ozbourne could be jousting on mini-bikes Then Elton John would be fired out of a cannon, holding the Olympic torch, to the tune of Rocket Man, landing in a big golden cup/lighting the Olympic Flame
tmac77 Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Then Elton John would be fired out of a cannon, holding the Olympic torch, to the tune of Rocket Man, landing in a big golden cup/lighting the Olympic Flame If he were fired out of a cannon from the deck of a replica of Nelson's HMS Victory that would be indeed a spectacular opening act.
KurtE Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Very extravagant, mate. Maybe remove the Stones and it sounds great

I like it! Although no need for the replica, bring the real thing from Portmouth harbour (She's still in commission), hellicopter it into the arena on to a purpose built beer-lake!
Puros Y Vino Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I'd rather see paint dry. Olympics are a big yawn fest to me.

Fell over laughing when u read this
ptrthgr8 Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 It's the 40th anniversay of the tragedy at the 1972 summer games in Munich, so it might be nice to see at least some level of respect being paid to those Israeli athletes who were murdered. I don't know that the IOC would really want to bring it up again (plus I'm sure they're PC pansies who are afraid to offend someone), so I'm not expecting anything. But it would be nice. ~ Greg ~
CaptainQuintero Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 AT some point it would have to haveMay starting off the Under Pressure rift, Slash goes Stop! Stop! Stop! and starts the Sweet Child Of Mine rift, McCartney goes Stop! Stop! Stop! and starts with the Ticket To Ride melody, Clapton goes Stop! Stop! Stop! and starts with Layla! Then The Queen comes out and makes them all stop, then a golden guitar flies through the air, she catches it and starts playing Whole Lotta Love by Zep and they all join in and Page comes down playing on a zipline Jagger, Ozzy, Sting and Joe Cocker on vocals :2thumbs: It's the 40th anniversay of the tragedy at the 1972 summer games in Munich, so it might be nice to see at least some level of respect being paid to those Israeli athletes who were murdered. CaptainQuintero Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 I don't really get the argument, there already was a televised memorial service and minutes silence. The memorial service was fine and suitibly fitting, showing respect for those who died. The Olympics leaves all politics behind as much as possible. I'm sure those who were directly involved and their friends/families really couldn't care less what goes off on a TV show. They are the only people who's opinions matter on the subject, I'm sure they have a lot better things to do on the anniversary of the event than care about whether a memorial was done too large or too small. I suspect the people getting the most upset for/against the matter are the ones who actually couldn't care less about the individual's involved in 1972 and just want to use the issue as a springboard for their own soapbox.
CaptainQuintero Posted July 27, 2012 Author Posted July 27, 2012 I think my idea about music legends was not heard, there are a load of sheep and cows on the field!
Guest Robo Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I would love to see Clapton/McCartney/May/Richards/Townsend, but I don't think we will. Instead we'll probaby have to suffer through Cliff Richards, Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams... with 15,000 people wearing neon green/pink/yellow shirts and black pants and funny hats who can't dance.
gigabyte056 Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I care and would have appreciated some kind of recognition, but am sure the IOC will not do anything. The Olympic spirit took a blow that day, and not by the terrorists, but by the IOC back then who choose to move forward and hide what happened. Sometimes when you choose to "ignore" the political aspect of something that happened it echoes substantially more then taking note, ignoring is just as much a form of action as not ignoring it. and to say that the Olympics is not about politics is ignoring the past going back to Moscow 1980, LA 84 and more. I understand the basic human nature to keep calm and carry on, sometimes we need to take notice and take a stand.

Munich widows call for own moment of silence at opening ceremonies July 25, 2012 (JTA) -- Widows of Israelis murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympics are asking the crowd at the opening ceremonies of the London Games to stand for a minute of silence, regardless of whether the International Olympic Committee recognizes it. “He told us that when he heard the explosions in the Olympic village, he debated whether to continue in the Games or go home, and decided not to let terror win," Ilana Romano, wife of Yossef Romano, a weightlifter who was murdered in the 1972 attack, said at a news conference. "Jacques Rogge, you have let terror win today.” Rogge is the president of the IOC, which repeatedly has refused to hold a moment of silence at Friday's opening ceremonies in memory of the 11 murdered athletes and coaches. The movement to hold a moment of silence at the Olympics has gathered steam after beginning as an online petition two years ago. International politicians and public figures, including President Obama and presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have called for an official moment of silence. Rogge held a moment of silence for the murdered athletes at a small ceremony in the Olympic Village on Monday. Keep up with JTA's comprehensive coverage of the 2012 London Olympics.
AverageJoe83 Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Well, this is pretty weak, the opening ceremonies are going on and we can't watch it live, we don't get to see it until 7:30 pm EST.
khomeinist Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I saw it on Senegalese TV via satellite. Paul M is such a goof. Iron Maiden 'Aces High' would have been better.
AverageJoe83 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Kinda wondering what that " Arctic Monkeys" cover band business was all about. You'd think for the Olympics you'd go all out. Did find the Rowan Atkinson bit funny as hell.
Vortigan Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Iron Maiden 'Aces High' would have been better. Oh yes!!
CaptainQuintero Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Hmmm kind of liked it, I enjoyed the first part showing the transition from countryside to industrial age, I thought the 7/7 tribute was an excellent piece, and I normally don't like 'performance art' but that piece was very touching. I was a little surprised that it was in the show as the mentality here is generally 'carry on/ignore the bad things in life' but it was a nice gesture. Didn't like the whole Harry Potter stuff but I guess younger viewers would have enjoyed it. Not sure on the whole love story thing but I guess they wanted some kind of framing for the music they wanted to put in the show. Parachuting Queen was classic! McCartney was a let down but anyone who saw him perform at the jubilee celebrations earlier this year wouldn't have been shocked by his performance! Feel sorry for the athletes who are competing in a few hours trying to get some sleep!
CaptainQuintero Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Still think they should have gone with Firing Elton John carrying the torch out of a cannon the light the cauldron!
AverageJoe83 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Still think they should have gone with Firing Elton John carrying the torch out of a cannon the light the cauldron! That would have been awesome lol!
Blakes Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I kept thinking at any point.. they'd break out into Pink Floyds the wall. Alot of the ceremony did seem very inspired by pink floyd's video's/gigs! Over all i think it went well... To be honest i did think it would be a total disaster, but we seemed to have pulled it off! I must say though the live bands were very disappointing... Theres so much better british bands to choose from. The rolling stones would have sent that place crazy!!!
