CanadianKodiak Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Currently, I have a 100 count humidor filled to the rafters with smokes. My problem is that some of these puppies need to sit and age a while and they're filling up valuable space where smoke-able sticks should be sitting. So I'd like to buy another humidor strictly for the sticks that need a little aging. 100 count or so should do. I recently moved outside of a tiny, podunk town where humidors are unheard of. And internet research is a bit sketchy. I don't get to test the seal first hand and prices are all over the place. One site has a 100 count humidor for 150 bucks and another site has that exact same humidor for 275. Any suggestions where I should be looking for reliable, on-line humidor shopping? Hopefully, within a $200 dollar range. My last name isn't Rockefeller. Btw, I'm in Canada. Help a brutha out
cckandb24 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Im sure almost everyone is going to respond by telling you to ditch the humidor idea and spend $50 on a 40-80 quart cooler with a pound of RH beads so that you have plenty of room to grow with this addiction. You will not regret it and save yourself a $100
CanadianKodiak Posted June 29, 2012 Author Posted June 29, 2012 When you're talking cooler are you talking camping cooler...like a Coleman? And if so, what do you do for a humidifier? Just a pound of beads in an ice-cream pail? How do you set such a beast up?
maverickdrinker Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 take a look at the humidor tutorial section of the site. Lots of information there.
pjansen Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I divided the pound of beads into four equal portions and put them in panty hose sacks and put them in the four corners of the cooler and then use a little fan on a timer for air circulation
cckandb24 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Just a plain ok Coleman cooler with a good seal is by far the best humidor ever created. The RH beads creat and maintain the humidity. If you search, some here favor a cheaper alternative in unscented kitty litter
rckymtn22 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Here is what you want...link Like other people mention buy some beads, hydrometer, and stick in the basement. You are good to go. I have 5 of them in my basement!
mk05 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 craigslist. fridge under free stuff. wash and let dry. fill with cigars. carry on.
ramon_cojones Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 cooler is such an unfortunate sight break down and get yourself an aristocrat
Lotusguy Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 cooler is such an unfortunate sight break down and get yourself an aristocrat Yeah, because they are in the $200 range, like the OP clearly stated
ramon_cojones Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 perhaps you should re-calibrate your sarcasm detector
dvickery Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 kodiak option(1)bob staebell ... aristocrat mxt delivered to alberta 3500$can more or less...holds about 200 boxes and has really good humidity control(dont need temp control in alberta). option(2)50ltr. cooler for 23$ at wallmart and a pound of heartfelt 65% beads(will hold about 500 cigars). option(3)canada humidor in red deer...lou just bought it from colin...if i may i will pm you the website or google. derrek
Hash Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Take a look at the Adorini humidors,I do not know if they are in the price range you specified though.
MrDowse Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 If you want to go the cooler route and need something a little easier on the eye, the stainless steel ones are good. They are bit more expensive than the basic plastic ones, but I like the retro 50s styling http://www.thefind.com/sports/info-54-qt-stainless-steel-cooler I have one and it works beautifully. Holds a ton of cigars and is stable at 65% RH with half a pound of beads.
CanadianKodiak Posted June 29, 2012 Author Posted June 29, 2012 Coolidor you say...hmmm. I love that idea. In fact, I may just pick an extra cooler this weekend. One question. I read in the tutorial section that if I store my sticks in boxes, no singles in the coolidor, then I really don't need to line it with Spanish cedar. Is that true? Thanks again for the info. Awesomeness!

Awesomeness! Absolutely, the boxes are made from cedar so you shouldn't need to buy extra. I store singles in my desktop humi and boxes in the coolidor.
ramon_cojones Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Pretty sure most of the boxes are not made of cedar anymore.
rckymtn22 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Get some cedar trays off the internet for storing singles in the coolidor.
al321 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Just ordered everything to set up a new coolerdor today. I have a small one and found it wasn't nearly big enough...going with a 70qt this time around. Total cost is a little over $150 US and I figure I can fit 20+ boxes in there. Here is a list of what I ordered with links: Cooler - bigger is better....trust me! Beads - two of these babies should keep humidity perfect for a 70 qt cooler Hygrometer - great hygrometer and comes with the calibration kit I do line mine with spanish cedar, but I'm into woodworking and have a bunch in the garage. Probably not necessary but it smells soooo good when you open it up! Here is my small one:

ajgagnon Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Those beads are amazing. So much so that I may have overdone it. In my large humidor (400 ct), one pound of moistened beads (and admittedly, a bit of green foam left-- I wasn't sure I trusted the beads yet), and I can't get the humidity to fall under 70%. Some sticks are spongy, but most are in boxes so they're ok. So yes, beads in a cooler would work a charm. A wine fridge, even left off, would look nicer, but cost more.

Got 3 mores boxes on the way so I'm definitely getting a coolidor on the go.
