mazolaman Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Hi Chums, We (my wife and I) are off on trip round Scandinavia and Europe. I've converted a van into a camper van that runs on LPG, and am currently on the ferry to Denmark, after which we will head north to Norway for the all day sun around the solstice, then on to Sweden, Finland, Estonia and south, following the sun into southern Europe, through Poland, Germany etc till we end up at the bottom of Italy. It's the trip of a lifetime for us, as we have sold the house and jacked in work to do it! There is no real plan, we will go where the wind blows us, when the urge takes us. If anyone has any info on where to buy a cigar, or where stocks LPG (Autogas) for the van, please post or PM me, your help would be appreciated. Cheers, Kevin.
NJP Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Best of luck mate. Safe trip. "Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living."(Miriam Beard) The best out of Miriam.
MrDowse Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Sounds fantastic Kevin. Have an amazing time! Never been to Scandinavia (I prefer warmer climes on my hols) but southern Italy is beautiful, Puglia is a particular favourite. Hope you will keep FOH updated with the odd progress report and photos?
Guest rob Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Safe travels, brother. You're living the dream, mate! Please keep us updated and take lots of photos.
Ryan Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Looks like a fantastic trip. Have a great time. Keep us posted!
canadianbeaver Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Bon Voyage and great roads ahead! Use this thread as your blog and let's see some photos OK??
dB69 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 There are no LPG stations in Finland. LPG cars have been highly taxed (read:forbidden) in the past, but I don't know the situation today. In December 2006 using an LPG car has been taxed 330€/day if got caught by police. So, beware of stop checks and welcome to Northern-Kor... oops, Finland!
headstand Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Kevin, I wish you and your wife the best of adventures on your road trip. Do it with style and send us stories. Alan
mazolaman Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Hi Everyone, and thanks for the good wishes, that's really kind. We're currently travelling in Denmark, heading North to Norway. I certainly will keep you posted, with a few photos when we get a good opportunity. Claire and I haven't fallen out yet...much.... I hope we don't get arrested in Finland for using a less toxic fuel! Cheers everyone!
winelover Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Best of luck mate - safe travels and bonne voyage. Looking forward to seeing some pics hopefully .
Mr.T Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Sounds like a great trip! Safe travels and keep us posted on your adventures!
Onsto Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Did a similar trip in 2007 in our 1969 Landrover Series II - took 6 months out of the world and had a blast with a top speed of 50 mph and breakdowns which governed where we would stop and undertake repairs every other week! Hope you have a great time. Fondest memories camping were in the Pyrenees (particularly Puigcerda in Spain and Albies and St. Georges on the French side), Portugal on the Atlantic coast north of Sagres (lots of free camping at the barragem (reservoir) sites and 'illegally but commonly' at the beaches around Playa De Luz on the Algarve) and the Italian Adriatic Coast between Ravenna and Pescara. If you can get to Corsica (car ferry is expensive but worth it) the camping in the mountains is rustic but spectacular. I'd also put out a recommendation for Abruzzo in central / Eastern Italy. Poorly equipped for camping facilities but IMO the most charming place in Europe. We ended up spending nearly a month exploring Abruzzo and still feeling a pang of regret when we decided it was time to move on. Stay in Loreto Aprutine or Penne and L'Aquila and hike in the mountains (Majella / Gran Sasso) - to me it was like the Alps without the tourists or the high prices... Parts of Eastern Europe were a little more 'sketchy' for camping in terms of the security of your possessions, not sure how much has changed in the last 5 years. In retrospect, we would have been better off taking the ferry from Bari to Piraeus (Athens) and driving back via Macedonia, Bulgaria and on to catch the Dalmatians.
ChanceSchmerr Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 This really does sound like the trip of a lifetime - Enjoy every second and kept us posted on your adventures, and best of luck to you both!
