chrismfontanot Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Someone on another forum had stated that the Montecristo 5 blend contains no Ligero. Is this truly the case? Is there anything else out there that wouldn't have any ligero? Just curious.. I smoked a young Monte 5 this morning and loved it - no harshness or bitterness, just very smooth and sweet. I enjoy milder stuff, so this was exactly what I was hoping for. I assumed that milder cigars generally have less ligero, I was just surprised to hear it would contain none at all.
ajgagnon Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 I think I recall reading Rob's post somewhere about the Cohiba Lancero (and most skinnies) not containing any ligero. It's just one ingredient among 4-5 leaf types.
bassman Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Recent (09 & later) MC#4s have been quite strong. Similar year MC#5s much milder. Not sur about ligero removed from the Skinnies, though. My 08 Cohiba CEs are powerful smokes. Almost though my second box.
winelover Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 I seriously doubt they are removing ligero from current releases as there is a backlog of aged tobacco in general use - so why restrict it?

Dozerhead Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 I've read that the regular Hoyo line does not have any ligero leaf in the blend. I suppose it is possible because it is a milder blend. I'm skeptical about the Monty, though.
Colt45 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 If anyone has a recent vintage sample they are willing to sacrifice..... Deconstructing the cigar might shine a light - the ligero, if any, should be darker than the rest of the filler. If I had any I'd be happy to do it

Where do you guys read this kind of crap? btw, the last Epicure No.1 I have smoked was almost as rich and strong than any recent Mag46 or Serie A…
Dozerhead Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Where do you guys read this kind of crap? btw, the last Epicure No.1 I have smoked was almost as rich and strong than any recent Mag46 or Serie A… I think it was Cigar Aficionado, but I don't remember the issue. HdM is one of my favorite marcas, so I could honestly care less if it has ligero in the blend or not. I just know that I enjoy them. I find them them to be mild to medium in strength, but very balanced and flavorful. But, as with any cigar, your mileage may vary.
Ryan Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I took the picture below at a cigar factory in Havana in February last year. It's a chart in the blending room where bundles of filler are put together by the blenders for use by the rollers. "Perla" is in the top right hand corner. It shows that, at least in that factory at that time, there was no ligero in the perla (Monte 5) size. I hid some of the other content because I told someone I would. Sorry, that's all I can say.
Ryan Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Some of my favourite cigars are panetelas that I get off the roller in the lobby in the Habana Libre hotel. No ligero, no seco, just volado. Lovely sweet cigars, perfect for a coffee or walking around. Thinking about them, I must have one tonight.
yiorgosm Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Is it just me, or is there no column for "Medio Tiempo" in the BHK???
Ryan Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Is it just me, or is there no column for "Medio Tiempo" in the BHK??? Oh, don't you start.. In the Ligero box for BHK there is a dividing slash to show weights for two types of Ligero. I suppose one of those may or may not be Medio Tiempo.
chrismfontanot Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 Ryan, thats great information - thanks for sharing
jedipastor Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I find it quite believable that the Monte #5 would have no ligero at all, based on the few I've had. Very mild cigars in terms of Vitamin N. There is a little "spiciness," but seco can deliver that sometimes.
PigFish Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 My understanding is that....................Small gauge cigars with a ring size of less than 36, do not contain any Ligero leaf. Trevor. This is true Trev, at least according to official Habanos literature, such as, "Cultivating a tradition of perfection." Page 49.
