The sun just peeked out after another two days of rain (we're going to see floods if this keeps up), and I wanted to enjoy the evening with a nice little cigar. Pulled out a beautiful little Boli PC, but realized I couldn't smell it due to a cold. My wife came into the room and asked me if I had lit a cigar in the house because the smell from the humidor was so strong. Nothing doing for me. Would you light up?

No sense wasting a good stick while you have a cold. I've never enjoyed one while having a cold since I can't pick up all the flavors when I can't smell anything.

I actually smoke a lot more cigars when i have a cold (always with a sore throat), but for a different reason. Since i smoke cigarettes, which hurt the throat and worsens the coughing - i almost completely shift to cigars the moment i catch a cold - that way, my throat is protected & recovery is usually very fast :)

But, yes, i completely agree with what others are saying - its just my case bcos of cigarettes!!

I usually don't smoke while I have a cold or sinus infection... unless I get that cigar smoking itch LOL

Your smell is what makes a cigar taste so good. Easy way to find that out, sick or not, while smoking your next cigar hold your pinch your nose closed for a draw or two, there's virtually no flavor.

Get well soon, Atchbo.

No definitely not ... there really is not much point.

I'd imagine if you smoke while you are sick it will prolong the illness or make it worse. I'm no MD, but maybe phoenix can give us his expert opinion.

No. It's the best time to do a little detox.

I'm sure there's no basis for this but it does make me feel better. When I feel a cold coming on, I occasionally light up an inexpensive stick (like a Quintero Brevas). When I smoke, I expel smoke nasally. Not just because it's probably the last time I'll be able to smell and taste a cigar for a week or two, but also to relieve some of that initial congestion. Yep, smoke sometimes clears my nose when I don't want to use a nasal spray. That said, I should probably follow it up with a neti pot. Perhaps a test for this winter.

If I smoke with any kind of congestion, I get a sinus infection. So for me, if I feel anything, I lay off.

As far as the neti pot, I use one whenever I finish smoking. If you wait until you are sick, it will do you no good. If you are on top of it, it will keep you healthy.

 Time to get a little more fastidious and proactive with the pot.

I'm in the same boat right now ... haven't been able to smell or taste ANYTHING at all in 6 days. No cigars. Not only is it pointless (lack of enjoyment), but smoking while sick has got to be bad for you. Better to let your body heal first.

And I'm also a big proponent of the Neli Pot/Bottle. Really good post-cigar healthcare.

I tried the neti pot today for the first time and had some additional excitement. I was leaning ove the sink with the pot, letting the warm salt water flow in one nostril and out the other when one of my cats decided to leap from the floor onto the center of my back. This produced the effect of water boarding with a ten pound clawed creature hanging on as I spewed salt water and nasal byproducts all over my kitchen. It did clear my sinuses. The cat survived and I am recovering in the garage with a BHK 54.
