jjdolphin Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I received a box of Serie P No2 box code OBA Sep11. For those out there that have smoked these I have a question. A friend of mine and I smoked one this weekend and we were shocked at how mild they were. They were in the humi for two months, so acclimated rather well. I was expecting maybe harshness due to age, but not mild. I was under the impression they are medium to full. Is age going to bring it to a medium/full or do we have duds? Is it just a blah period? There is no harshness of any kind or mineral flavor. Maybe if someone has experienced this with the P2 or another marca please chime in.
CaptainQuintero Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 The P2 are in my experience less in your face than say the D4. They are more like the Lusitanias to me. They will probably maintain the character that they are smoking like now but will gain a bit of richness in time. If they are in a sick period you will 100% know about it, you won't have to ask trust me!
jjdolphin Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 The P2 are in my experience less in your face than say the D4. I just had the D4 a week ago. It was in my face, in my stomach, in my head. You name it. The P2 definitely did not seem sick, but mild. Hopefully it develops more like you said.
Marker Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 The PSP2 I have had were never mild/medium. Great cigar with strong notes like John (Hovy) said. Unless your taste was muted that day from something else I can't explain it other than bad roll/dud.
jjdolphin Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 It could just be your palate at that time of day. Did you eat spicey food, heavy meat, alot of coffee...? It was a Cinco de Mayo party so a lot of Mexican food. 9PM A lot of Margaritas and some Tennessee moonshine, that I am trying to forget. And did I mention a lot of Margaritas. 23 more sticks left from the box, so I will see how the others fare. I just didn't think that anything could really bring it down to the mild experience I had.
CaptainQuintero Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I don't know if I'd say mild. To me the P2 is more refined than the D4. Say, like a piece of buttered sliced white bread, compared to a slice of rough cut toast with butter quickly scraped across it. Possibly the worst simile ever
mk05 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I would say my tastebuds gauge the P2 at mild to medium. But it would put the D4 at a medium. Never really liked either though.

And did I mention a lot of Margaritas. You have the answer to your question. This does not preclude that you might have a bad box. Young cigars, when they get "sick", are rarely "mild"; most times they are unpleasant, agressive, with vegetal greenness and/or traces of ammonia…

I was really looking forward to enjoying the P2 from all that I have heard.

Just wondering if the cigar was to blame ... Quite certain the other 23 will be just fine after an Aspirin or two
ramon_cojones Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I haven't had any 10 or 11s but the older p2s have always been a mild smoke for me, not a huge fan p1 is superior.
winelover Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 PSP2s ought to be rich, satisfying and full of partagas flavours. how old are they? I've never had a strong or full bodied PSP2 and agree that D4s are fuller and more in your face. Let us know how you get on with the rest. G
Dbone Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Yeah I'm going to side with many of the others. I have a real nice looking HQ P2 boxes from Rob. I do find them lighter in body with cooler smoke than an D4 when both are "on". Finish is lighter, more pleasant. If you watch the video review on these, I'm in total agreement. Christmas cake / pumpkin pie spice all the way. Not a bad cigar, although I'm not a fan of the vitola, this one is an exception. Every box is going to have a few below average cigars, don't get discouraged. I'm not sure why but I usually associate Partagas to a fall weather smoke LOL
Mr.T Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I'd echo a lot of the comments above. I find these to be a smoother, more refined smoke than the D4. And the box I've got from 2011 are smoking superb. The uniformity of construction, draw, flavor etc is outstanding.
TM-US Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I have not found the P2 to be to my taste, but recent d4 batches have been phenomenally good- peppery when really young, but 6 months in the humidor and they become wonderfully smooth, no pepper, very rich creamy smoke.
headstand Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I'm not going to weigh in on this discussion as I have only had two of the P2s so far - both delicious. A curious thing though - the second P2 I smoked tasted like - are you ready for it? Roast chicken with sage and thyme seasoning. OK. I know it sounds crazy, and if I was on the Czars deck for a review I would certainly get tossed out, but the you have it.
isa Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I find the PSP2(all 2011) around medium - some samples are below medium, others a bit above medium. The flavours can be pretty good, though i prefer PSD4 - a fuller body in my experience.
SteveGriff Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I would go along with the others on this thread. The P2 are milder than the D4's... I'm not sure if that's always been the case as I do remember back in the late 2000's the P2's being on par on strength as the D4's. However my mind is crap. Steve.
Yoruba Hacker Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Cuban cigars. Not exactly the model of consistency. Sounds like it was just a dud. Happens. All the time. Haven't smoked a recent one, but the first wave '05's were on their way to a nice, balanced medium-but-flavorful sweetspot last time I had one (maybe a year ago?). This from a guy who doesn't like cigars too "In your face." For some reason that lot has been getting soft press on the internet boards of late. Not sure why, but if the more recent vintages are improved versions of that original blend, great news for the future. Assuming they age the same.
mk05 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 ...nice, balanced medium-but-flavorful sweetspot last time I had one (maybe a year ago?). I think it was around August. I recall them being really mild, almost OR Genios mild, same character to it but with a bit of peanuty creme. The 08 tubo release were a bit stronger...could have sworn the wrappers were thinner too, but my memory on this cigar escapes me. I didnt like either release remember? Heh got rid of all of them. All hail the P1!

All hail the P1! I'm not sure I'd call them "mild" except perhaps in some triple-ligero NC context (which you may have been smoking a lot of in those days). I recall the edges were falling off on a pretty nice trajectory on those. One man's opinion <shrug>. But may be worth taking a test run soon. Getting closer to their tenth birthdays, which is when I thought they'd be killer.
