NMJoe Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Hi guys, I'm thinking of picking up a 50 cab of these from '03, and wonder if those of you out there with cabs from this year have opinions on the quality from your particular box code? I'm trying to determine if there are codes known to be good or bad. Cheers! NMJ
Tarks Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I have a cab of 02's and 03's and both are good but the 02's are so much more complex than the 03's. Having said that, the 03's are worth purchasing. I have another cab on the way.
BradNC Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I have one from May and one from Sept and both are outstanding. I've heard June was excellent but I think the 'bacca was similar and magic beans weren't used in just the 'bacca used in the June boxes. The key seems to be the 03 and not so much the month in my humble, amateur opinion. HabanaKane21 says he concurs after sampling his hoard of cabs and he says he is a card carrying, guru on the subject.
rcarlson Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 May-Sept "ORE." All awesome. But I have had other factory codes. and they were excellent too. Everything I've had in '03 was great, but had a December box with much lighter wrappers. No difference in flavor.
shrink Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 May-Sept "ORE." All awesome. 50 cabs of Punch Super Seleccion No. 1 with these same boxcodes are outstanding, as well.
dvickery Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 since '98...i believe the best "year" (i havnt smoked many of the more recent cigars)would be '03. derrek
Hohenthal Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 50 cabs of Punch Super Seleccion No. 1 with these same boxcodes are outstanding, as well. I agree 100%
SurpriseMVP Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I have 2 cabs from May 03. First cab was so good I bought another for fear of running out
NMJoe Posted April 28, 2012 Author Posted April 28, 2012 Follow-up question: How much longer do you all project an '03 box will smoke at, or near, the top of its game before beginning to decline in taste, quality and enjoyment?
shrink Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 How much longer do you all project an '03 box will smoke at, or near, the top of its game before beginning to decline in taste, quality and enjoyment? Ah, this is the question we all ask. I have a box of '99 HdD that is still strong and flavorful, but I've smoked from a box of '03s that I judged to be expired. Provenance (storage conditions) have a lot to do with this, but so does the quality and strength of the original tobacco. IMO, if you get an '03 box that still has some strength and body, they should be good for another 3 to 5 years.

I have done a fair amount of research on this vitola today, and I am longing for a cab.
isa Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I hav a cab of Des Dieux, ORE may '11. They are pretty good smokes given that HDM is not my kind of marca. Havent had even one with any issues.
jedipastor Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I have a July '03 cab. I've only smoked 5-6 of them, and they've all been at least "very good," with two being quite "excellent." None I'd call "epic" yet, but there are quite a few left For the price, I think it's definitely worth it if you like the DD. After sampling these, I bought a box from '08 so I'll have more aged DDs when this cab is gone. I've actually gotten a lot more into HdM as a marca this year because of these. I've found that the HdM flavor profile is just right up my alley for a morning cigar.
