beamer Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I'm really not sure what I was waiting for. Great cigar.
TremontiSG Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Love the 898. Out of all the boxes I have, that box by far smells the best when opened. If you weren't looking you would think it was a box of raisins. Just amazing.
beamer Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 I see a box in my future. What is the big difference between the varnished and unvarnished? Just packaging?
Michel1968 Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I see a box in my future. What is the big difference between the varnished and unvarnished? Just packaging? Welcome to the club! 898v is simply a great cigar (and saviour of everything left Lonsdale-ish)... Varnished is a Dalia (43 x 170mm), Unvarnished is a Corona Grande (42 x 155mm) Varnished more connected to a Lusitania, Unvarnished more like a mellow Shorts (to my palate that is)
Pilgrims Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I see a box in my future. What is the big difference between the varnished and unvarnished? Just packaging? size slightly, have a look on trevors site Love 8-9-8's have a box sitting in the locker
beamer Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 Thanks, guys. Didn't realize the varnished and unvarnished were completely different sizes. This one was from the Czar Partagas sampler.
perfectform Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 The moment when I "got" cuban cigars was when I smoked my first 898V. One of my favorites.
investandprosper Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Favorite here as well. Bloody consistent too!
sighuber Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 I really like these too. I have always found them consistent and enjoy the taste and size.
mbrody Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 The moment when I "got" cuban cigars was when I smoked my first 898V. One of my favorites. Although I can't say it is my favorite, I had this same experience. Still very good, and a HQ box that I got from Rob is excellent (takes it to another level for sure).
ramon_cojones Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 My 09 box is pretty good, I think I'm just not a huge fan of the profile itself like the lusi.

But, the "unvarnished" 898 variety was discontinued some years ago. The 898 Varnished is just it now. And yes, they are wonderful. I've had a number of these from different sources over the years. But if you get the HQ boxes from Czar's, you'll REALLY enjoy some of the best that Cuba has to offer!!!!
LLC Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 After reading this thread, I can't wait for the arrival of the 5 in my sample pack from the LFTH the other night.
Miner Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Go 3 on the way in the mail. Based on past experience they'll have to spend a month in the wine fridge before I try them. I can't wait!! Cheers
