I am new to Cuban cigars, so this topic is as much curiosity as it is helpful for future purchases.

I realize cigars are subjective, one mans trash is another mans treasure, so keep this opinions only.

What Cuban cigars are great for their price tag and what Cuban cigars are outrageous for their price tag. What do you think is the best buy out there for 2011-2012?

RASS and BBF price points are excellent for the smokes

There's going to be lots of varying opinions on this one, but my personal best values for quality and smoking time are some of the Torpedos, particularly Upmann #2 and VR Unicos. I also really rate the Bolivar Corona Gicantes, and compared to many of the other Churchill vitolas it is exceptional value.

Poorest value (for me) has to be Cohiba Siglo V and the Esplendidos. Can be great, but mostly aren't in my experience. For the money, I'd rather have a Corona Gicantes AND an Upmann #2 (maybe not quite, but you get the picture!)

For value smokes as in 'budget', check out the Cheap & Cheerful forum. Of this group, I recommend the HdM Palmas Extra, you really can't go wrong with it.

buy samplers bro. Get a feel for what you like. 5ers are a good way to start. Try one right away and then another a few months down the road to see how it changes.

One other piece of advice. Buy the biggest storage you can find. trust me....

Not necessarily 2010-2011 BEST, but I vote for Partagas Shorts and Bolivar Coronas Junior. Great value, flavor and price. Drawback is that they are small.

Overall, regular production seems to have the best value.

I sometimes get a little miffed at Cohiba, premium price and had some let downs. Also, LE's have made me feel a little shorted, depending upon the specific smoke. Some are worth it.

Part of the fun is trying them and seeing for yourself! Enjoy!

RASS, Bolivar Royal Corona, Bolivar PCs, Partagas Shorts, SCDLH El Principe, Upmann Mag 46, and Juan Lopez #2 are all great smokes for the money.

Saint Luis Rey Regio

El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme

Ramon Allones Specialty Select (RASS)

Hoyo de Monterey Epicure No.2 (Epi.2)

H Upmann Magnum 46

Partagas Serie D No.4

These are all cigars I started out with more than 17 years ago and still have a place in my cabinet today. Not too expensive and are very good. Good way to start. Cheers

Czar's Partagas Party Pack sampler is the best deal on the market!!!!!

Cheap and Cheerful section is worth taking a look at.

The other cigars mentioned in the post are pretty much par for the money.

My wallet disagrees on the viewpoint as far as the minutos/half coronas being a good bang for the buck. I do buy them, but I do believe the amount you pay for their size is not really a good price for the amount of tobacco. I'd rather spend 10-20 bucks more per buck and get a larger vitola such as the marevas. Having said this, I've spent shtloads on El Principes, Shorts, Boli CJ's and RASCC. They're good for short quicksmokes but not for the pricepoint.

RASS and Party shorts head my list, least value may be CORO but then good ones are still dam good

A lot of good sticks out there...Bolivar Petit Corona and Partagas shorts are great sticks and very affordable too. IF your looking for something bigger, ERDM Choix supreme are a very good everyday robusto. Monte petit edumundos/psd4/psp2/monte 2s/brc tubos/punch punch tubos are great because you can buy them in 10 ct boxes so its easier on the wallet and you dont have to commit to a full box of 25

As a few folks pointed out above. Buy samplers. Maybe get two of each recommendation to get a good feel for a cigar. Personally, these are what I'd consider good "bang for the buck" cigars.

RASS - great flavour range

PSD4 - I've smoked about 20 of these. I haven't had a bad one yet.

HDM Palmas Extras. - Flavourful and cheap.

Por Larranaga Pantellas - best flavour/value out there. (if you can find them)

The way the recent Bolivars are smoking. I'd say that they are one of the best value's out there.

Pick one in your price range and size.

So far I've had some really good Boli Coronas JR's, Petit Coronas & Royal Coronas. Gonna crack a box of 2011 BBF's soon, but I've heard positive things about them as well.

Emphasising value for money, I'd go for the following:

Minuto = RASCC

Petit corona = PLPC

Robusto = BRC or RASS

Corona Gorda = Mag46

Torpedo = Upmann 2 or PSP2

Lonsdale = P898 (for a treat)

Churchill = BCG

Avoid cohiba, RE's and LE's and check the reviews for stellar regular production.

Value for money is a hard one, for me Sir Winstons and BHK52 are value for money as they deliver, while cigars such as Guantanameras, Fonseca cosacos etc are not good value for money as they have never, ever delivered.

Cheapies that for me are value for money:

Boli PC

PLPC

Quintero Panatelas

Punch PC

Partagas Shorts

Medium priced which for me are value for money:

Mag 46

Monte #3

QDO Coronas

RYJ Short Churchill

HDM Epi #2

Dip 2

Monte espeical #2

High Priced which for me are value for money:

BHK52

Sir Winstons

Monte Sublimes

Partagas Lusis

These for me are what will consistantly deliver the flavours and smoking experience that is worth the money spent on them.

Cohiba Robustos and Upmann Sir Winstons offer a whole lot of bang, but are lots of bucks. Still, it sets the bar for me at what a 12 dollar cigar should be. The Partagas 898 is a bar for what an 8 dollar cigar should be. I really like SLR as a marca, so the Regios and Serie A offer a lot for their price, but for the best inexpensive cigar out of Cuba, try the Upmann Epicure. The short panatella gives very solid flavors at 3 dollars a cigar. They are a half hour smoke and being so slim, you need to smoke slow or it will overheat and ruin the flavors. PLPC and Montecarlos also offer a lot for their pricepoint.

If I was new to Cubans and had a $1000 budget to begin I'd order a cab of PLPC, 10 counts of PSD4, Monte 2, 898, a box of CoRos, Partagas Shorts, and Bolivar PCs. The PL need 3-5 years to shine, but you'd have plenty of cigars smoking well now to work through while aging the PL. 2010 and 2011 PSD4, Shorts, CoRos, and Boli PCs are smoking great now.

I'd say RASS and PL-almost-anything-PL are the best bangs for the buck. Great flavours and performance. Partagas 898 coming in third of the pack for me.

Worst value? While I love me a great Cohiba when it's "on", I'd have to say Cohiba Siglo VI and Cohiba Esplendidos are horrible value-for-performance when you get a dud. Right up there also would be Trini Fundadores (but they're exquisite when they're on).
