brian1 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Sorry, have to respectfully disagree here. Suckling puts himself out there in the public eye with his eponoymous website Jamessuckling.com He is outspoken on both wines and cigars. If you put yourself out there in the public eye, you have to be prepared for the good and the bad that comes with it. The " if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything" is not relevant in this case IMHO. Completely agreed with Atchbo's sentiments. It seems that with some of these comments on here, that some could do with a dram of Mom's common-sense medicine - "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything".
nick17 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Im interested in seeing the DVD hopefully i will be able to get my hands on it sooner rather then later
Habanakane21 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I'm pretty sure I bought a box of cigars just for the DVD...!!!
Ken Gargett Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Fair enough, but when one reviews a movie, or show, do they not talk about the creator/director as well? sure but that discussion usually revolves around his professional contributions, successes, failures etc, unless there is something fairly major - eg a new polanski film could fairly include mention of his situation/crimes etc. i have no problem if someone rails against another on legit grounds but i agree with others that this is not the place for the personal. all that said, may i suggest that those interested click into the link below which has a two minute trailer. it will help give you an idea. http://heartandsoulofcuba.com//home?fb_comment_id=fbc_10150411195087058_20160498_10150422271877058&cmntid=10150422271877058&ref=notif¬if_t=comment_mention#f3674c2b9e0d69c
CanuckSARTech Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 OMG!!!! I agree with Ken actually!!! Gasp!
Wil Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I just bought the DVD and access to his site (for a few dollars extra). Really looking forward to watching the film. He is definitely going to have to improve the content of the members area if he wants people to keep coming back, particularly given there are so many excellent free sites like FOH out there.
Scdalak Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 If SUCKling paid me to watch his DVD I wouldn't...
aavkk Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 man he sure is a polarizing figure in the world of habanos. Love or hate him though his love of the leaf is genuine and it seems that its shown through in spades in the film, I'll have to check it out at some point. Personally I much prefer to read his thoughts rather than listen to him and his column in CA was easily the most appealing aspect of the magazine.
Guest rob Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I consider him a brother... although I've never met him. Just as I do most of you guys.
ZinZan Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I'm pretty sure I bought a box of cigars just for the DVD...!!! Same here.
Ghabanos Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Same here. x 2 So after this thread and so many ppl reflecting both sides of the spectrum I had to check it out myself... Positive: seems genuine. And seems really knowledgable Negative: not charismatic at all. Kind of a boring speaker... Anyway, in the end it is just one human beings opinion...But I would still like to meet him. Great topic btw...
craigos Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I got the DVD (can download the digital version) for USD19.99. Question is was it as good as 2 CORO? Nope.
Ken Gargett Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 If SUCKling paid me to watch his DVD I wouldn't... nice to see that the 'let's not get personal' diatribes got thru!!
mb55317 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 If SUCKling paid me to watch his DVD I wouldn't... Comments like this add absolutely nothing to the discussion. I've watched the film and really enjoyed it. Even my girlfriend who has little interest in the subject enjoyed it. I think it really depicts how much is involved in producing each stick and just how hand made they really are. I think it makes me appreciate them more. Whatever you think of JS personally I find it hard to see how any cigar lover wouldn't appreciate this film.
BENN Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 If SUCKling paid me to watch his DVD I wouldn't... Very nice input!! A lot of thought and effort and a great contribution to the thread! At least he has achieved a lot in the cigar community.

Well said For me it's all about the movie ,as far as James goes you cannot deny his passion ,and as in anything passion is everything And as far as any feelings about James and his life style Envies the only one that springs to mind Cheers OZ
ned Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 just finished watching it. i thought it was a great dvd, so informational. he did a great job on it.
tempbond Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Whatever you think of JS personally I find it hard to see how any cigar lover wouldn't appreciate this film. I couldn't agree more with that statement. Though I don't find JS as charismatic or endearing as Rob, Smithy and Ken, I still have to thank him very much for making this documentary. I downloaded the movie and watched it on my computer as soon as I saw the link to his website. I know that many people like me don't go out of their way to watch or read JS, but he did make a good movie and has allowed everyone to see the "behind the scenes" of cuban cigar production most of us would never get the chance to see otherwise and for that we have to be thankful. So to all who won't even watch just because it's JS, you're missing out !
mb55317 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I cannot even imagine the kind of documentary these three would come up with ... Could be a sequel? The start of a trilogy?!!
dB69 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I downloaded the film today and watched it twice. Excellent documentary of "From seed to cigar", very enjoyable! Five stars! I don't understand why some people criticize Mr Suckling or his voice. The world needs personalities or it gets very flat and boring.
BradNC Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I downloaded the video from his website and really enjoyed it as well. Great video in my opinion. Regardless of your opinion of JS, my vote is to watch it. I found myself focusing on the content and not the presenter which is what all good documentaries should do.
ZinZan Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I just watched it last night. Great documentary, its not gonna win awards, definitely a national geographic standards but for somebody, Cuba is far and distant dream, this is the closest i get to Cuba. It was extremely informative and insightful of Cuba and cigars.
Bartolomeo Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Finally had time to watch it on my flight back from Florida, excellent movie and i learned so many new things I never knew before, and isnt that the point, to learn and be entertained at the same time Highly recommend Bart
Guest rob Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Me and the missus watched this last night. I knew I was going to like it... but the fact that my missus who doesn't smoke cigars liked it was a very good sign. She acknowledged that she never knew how mow much work, precision, thought, art, and care goes into a Habanos.
