IcedCanuck Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I hope they win their case but when you're going up against the government the deck is stacked against you!
riazp Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Interesting read Tony, I was wondering when one of the big tobacco companies was going to sue. These huge health warning that they put on canadian cigarette boxes dont change the fact that its too little too late. People who smoke are addicted. They know its bad for them. They know the effects of cigarette smoking. To me the solution is not plain packaging. people are will still be addicted and will buy plain packaged cigarettes.
JSPEC Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 100% my thoughts! If someone has taken up smoking and has become addicted, the smoking habit has become engraved in their every day life. You can package cigarettes in condoms and people would still buy. I would suspect the sales of cigarette cases would rise because people would buy the packs and move the cigarettes into nice sleek cigarette cases and just do away with the original packaging.
CanuckSARTech Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Tony....what are you doing reading Al Jazeera??
tdlfoto Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 AJ is MUCH better news than you find on any canadian or american network/corp IMHO. I stream the channel to my TV too. Seriously, give it a try...it's not the boogy-man it's made out to be.
nick17 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I know that its better than any US new organization just still find it kinda sketchy thats all
Puros Y Vino Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Tony....what are you doing reading Al Jazeera?? Probably because they cover stuff our media won't touch.
jedipastor Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 The cigar industry and it's fans (i.e. us) need to do a MUCH better job of educating people about the incredibly vast differences between cigars and cigarettes. The differences to health (there has NEVER been a study that showed 1-2 cigars a day increases your risk of cancer!), the lack of addiction for most cigar smokers, etc. Not to mention the fact that cigars do not have a "big tobacco" counterpart ... even HSA is a dwarf compared to those guys. And in the non-Cuban world, you're talking primarily small family-owned companies. We need to distance ourselves from cigarettes as much as possible, and convince the legislators that they're talking about apples and oranges. It would be like a law that makes it illegal to "create artwork in public" aimed at adding stiffer penalties for graffiti, when at the same time it would outlaw characakture artists, carnival face-painters, or people who hung up decorations for a holiday.

We too could sue the Govt on proposed legislation......my quote on a "mates deal" $200,000 + costs (estimated 2 Million) should we lose. I lose my house. My kids their future. Let BAT and Imperial sue the Govt and we will ride off their coat tails. I feel neutered in one way. 10 years ago I would go "All In" Today......I can't . Maturity or softness. I have struggled with the question for 6 months. In the end, I have rolled. and It doesn't sit well. I don't sleep well. However, I can't throw my family's future against a Govt with unlimitted resources.
