While I was vacationing my g/f and I received a nice bottle of champagne. There was a bit of an incident which occurred and I believe this was gifted to us to try and smooth things over. I have heard through the grape vine that champagne and cigars compliment each other rather well but had never actually tried it myself. So I took it upon myself to test what I have heard out. I decided to spark up a Bolivar Royal Corona to accompany me on this adventure and what an adventure it was. I was very surprised at just how much the champagne was changing and enhancing the flavours of the cigar. My g/f does not smoke cigars but I was able to get her to try a couple puffs and even she was liking it and that is astonishing all on it's own! I was tasting intense flavours of almonds, cream, and at times what I can only describe as a kind of pudding I've only ever had around Christmas. This made me wonder if any other FoH members have tried pairing a CC with champagne and what their experiences were. For me it was an experience that I for one plan on having again only I may start experimenting with different types of cigars.

Although I have never tried that pairing myself, it is briefly discussed by Vahe Gerard in his book 'L'Art du Cigare'. In it he recommends light and aromatic smokes (for instance ERD Choix supreme). Of course, it is always a question of personal taste but, if one follows his advice, your choice of a Bolivar Royal Corona seems to be spot on.

Best,

Michel

I, personally, don't pair a drink to my cigars.

I have tried quite a few times and always found that one is stealing the attencion from the other.

However, the London-based cigar dealer Mitchell Orchant seemes to be convinced of Champagne and Cigars, if anything.

Bottom line, follow your heart - if you like it, you like it, if you don't, you don't.

Cheers and enjoy!

This combination occurs quite often for me, as my wife enjoys champagne immensely.

I really enjoy the bubbles on the tongue, probably why I also like smoking cigars with a Perrier or other sparkling water.

you'll find quite a lot of references to this match throughout the forum. i think it can be an absolute winner.

spoke to the somm at mugaritz, who is one of the world's best (yes rob, report coming), and he agrees. he mentioned his ultimate being the champagnes of jacques selosse.

My first cigar was with champagne and have had many more pairings since. I think the ERDM fits it perfectly, especially the Demi Tasse, which is a perfect little size for one glass.
