Nail hit on head exactly to the point above. Even if you don't "do the right thing" and educate him/her - someone will eventually. Some of my life's experiences point to that old, old saying that "No good deed goes unpunished." Just carefully gauge the situation and if he looks like he can be talked to, quietly educate him in private. Otherwise, Mum's The Word (for me)

the thing about this that has me most perplexed... is that there are bikes out there worth more than cars!

You mean my smoke wasn't a DC? Ken, you should have told me. I am so embarrassed.

Just kidding, it was not me!

But Ken, I do think that you did the right thing. He was a nice enough guy and not throwing his weight around so let him enjoy his bliss. If the guy was a blowhard, then unload on him---publically.

I still don't believe you kept your mouth shut :D

Seriously doubt he enjoyed it after you had finished speaking to him about the Wallabies, Qantas, Telstra, politicians, Catholic Priests and "The Boss".

In this instance I'm with you Ken; the guy was probably having a great day so no reason to rain on his parade.

"I'm really glad you're enjoying that. I have reason to suspect it might be counterfeit, but some of the counterfeits I have smoked have been really good. Here's a _________. Try it when you can and see of you find a difference."

Easy, polite, educational and generous. How does that spoil the guy's day?

Some days, you just have to play nice.

Was at a little cafe in Paris and had a beer for lunch (they asked, small or medium or large – I said large and got a bucket!). Came out and thought, that is an odd smell. Bloke at an outside table with a cigar. All in black with a big cowboy hat but he was not American. Could not pick the accent tho. Nice chap. We got talking. It was a big fattie with a Cohiba band. I asked if a Siglo VI. No, he says. It is a Double Corona and starts to explain what they are. I’m about to explain to him that, 'no it was not, not with that band'. But then I thought he seemed like a nice guy and he was clearly enjoying it. Best to let him, I thought. So for once, I bit my tongue.

No guarantee it will ever happen again.

Would you have kept stumm?

Cohiba Double Corona Limited Edition

Box of 25 cigars 7 5/8 x 49

It will be worthwhile to taste one of these Double Coronas with all the Cohiba Habanos exquisiteness and flavor in almost one and a half hours of pleasure.

Found this on a website. It's also a LE.

A sig vi is def a cigar that i could spot a mile off, to me it sounds like it prob was and he just didnt know what it was he smoking. Although he was probably the nicest guy in the world, the fact he was wearing a cowboy precludes my judgement so i would have told him. Lol just kidding.

But i still dont see why qerying the cigar further would have been a bad thing, it can still be done in friendly way, look at it this way, his bliss with that cigar will last an hour, until he buys another fake and smokes that, then another, then another.

Why not put him right and maybe when he smokes a real one he will experience true bliss...

So i woukd have felt out situation and probably have told him. Just my two cents folks

People do not like being told they are wrong or that they were had. Especially by someone they do not know. I have never seen this situation go well.

Frankly I see little "gained" by telling a stranger that they're probably smoking a fake. What are you, a Genuine Cuban Cigar superhero, fighting injustice?

You did the right thing, Ken.

What do you mean "not with that band"? Both the Siglo VI and the DC EL wear the standard B Cohiba band; the guy may have had taken off the EL band…

:rotfl:

without saying a word you should've walked up to him, stuck your nose right up near his face at the other end of his cigar.

then inhaled deeply.

if it smelled like knockoff nicaraguan, proclaim "i smell shiiite"*

and then attempt to explain. :forkyou:

Probably was a Siglo VI and the guy didn't know his vitolas... the nose would know!!

*(reference to obscure scottish comedy sketches - chewin the fat!!)

I always keep my mouth shut in these situations as there is simply nothing to gain from it. If the person is nice and enjoying themselves, you'll more than likely come across as a tool. On the other hand, if the person is a tool, they'll likely ignore everything you say anyway as they know better.

Posted

It could be that it was just a Sig VI and he got confused on the vitola. But in any event, if they guy is enjoying it I'd let it go. If it's a friend, I'd look up a website with vitola measurements on my phone and show him and try to figure it out together.

possibly but that would be an odd thing to do. just the one? and it was too fat.

and rob, yes, i am still wondering. perhaps it is the new kinder, gentler me?

I would have politely explain to him that it's not and the reason behind it. Educating someone is important, so they know not to make the same mistake in future. I am sure this gentleman would have appreciated it.

I dont know if you remember when we were visting Brokenwood, and Kent showed us a Cohiba wrapped in cellophane we both informed him that it was fake and he appreciated it.

Cheers,

Elie.

it was a cohiba, in his mind , you did a nice thing . there's an old saying, "it's not a lie if YOU believe it"

Hi Ken,

I think you made the right call. Please forgive me if this is offensive, but generally speaking, if a man is wearing a cowboy hat, he is not a shy introvert. You would have only created an argument with a stone wall.

Thanks for sharing,

Curtiss

I find it incredible that so few of you think it's appropriate to fight counterfeiting with education. Ken would not have insulted the guy -- not with ken's personality.

I know it's an extreme analogy, but consider what you would do if you witnessed an adult apparently abusing a child...

Sorry Van55, this doesn't make any sense at all (IMHO and as a father of a 1,5 year old daughter this is far, very far beyond any limits thinkable)

Okay. Okay!!!!!! I said it was an extreme analogy. Let's change it to "You see a guy putting a slug in a parking meter."

Do you make a speech to all the people you see wearing a fake Rolex watch or a fake Vuitton bag or a fake Lacoste shirt?

Posted

hell the real VI's are so inconsistent the fake was probably better.

These days walking around proud of possessing real cubans is like being proud of having authentic dollar store sunglasses.

Paying these prices for the worlds best tobacco slaughtered and rolled like crap, We might be the town idiots :rotfl:

I might try a few of those fakes, the outfits making those are probably doing a better job and give more of a ****.
