El Presidente Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I remember the buzz surrounding the Cohiba Maduro 5 when it was released in 2007. There was a tremendous amount of anticipation. What is your opinion of these cigars? From a retailers perspective the Genios and Secretos have been well accepted in the market. The Magicos less so. From a personal perspective, a great Genios and Secreto are a beautiful thing (although share little with the general Cohiba flavour profile). They both have flaws particularly when produced with thick dark sandpaper wrappers (bitterness) but a thin silky smooth wrapper makes all the difference. I guess that we would have equal number fans and dissenters on this line of cigars. Which are you and why? If you like them, which is your favourite?
kaleehb Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I do enjoy the Maduro 5's with Genios being my favorite size in the line. This is one of larger cigars in my collection but a nice tasty treat on those long weeks of work.
jdbrown Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I have kept full boxes of both Genios and Secretos from initial release. In between I have had 10cts of each and they were very good to excellent. Three weeks ago I busted out a 07 Secretos and it was awful. Unfortunately the wrappers on both original boxes are thick and rough! The 10cts were not! I may break out an 07 Genios tonite for baseball playoffs and see what I have. I wonder if more age would help or maybe just a lost cause at this point??

CaptainQuintero Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Not that keen on the Genios, doesn't seem balanced to my tastes. The secretos however I have really enjoyed, perfect with a coffee. They are a nice change to partagas shorts for a early afternoon smoke. I don't see any relation to the Cohiba DNA which in my opinions hinders them as they have come hindered with the Cohiba price tags. If they had their own line the price could be less and I would probably add them to my regular rotation, as it stands due to the price they are more of a novelty and not a regular smoke at all.
Ghabanos Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I have had all three. The box of secretos are so so. Main complaint is draw is way too tight. The Genios is my fav and when not enogh time I reach for the magicos... Chocolate coffee... And smooth... Genios and magicos are from 08
Lotusguy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I've just decided to trade/sell off my remaining Genios from 2008. I just don't enjoy them anymore after going through a 10er box and a few sticks from this box. There are better Cohiba sticks for the money (IMO).
maverickdrinker Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Haven't smoked one in a while. I have a box and 1/2 of Original release Genios and magicos. Might have to fire one up this weekend to see how they are progressing
Dbone Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I have a lovely box of Magicos from the original release. Smoked a few each year, smooth, sweet, woody... an enjoyable cigar. Although this year, either I had three bad in a row or my box went sick or something. Beautiful construction and very oily wrappers. They tasted like an ashtray, couldn't even finish the third one just to confirm. What happen to my box?!?

lemmycaution Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I have enjoyed the Secretos in the past, but haven't had one in years. For my taste I'd rather smoke other Habanos. They kind of remind me of some NC's. Don't know why, maybe the wrapper...
Puros Y Vino Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I hoard Genios when I can. I always find them full of rich cocoa, coffee tastes. Very smooth. Have never tried the Magicos. I have a box of Secretos that were somewhat bland. Now they've taken on an ammonia smell. Hopefully they'll turn into something worthwhile. Right now, I dont touch them.
Cig Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I love both the Genios and Secretos. I would have more of them if they were a little cheaper.
bolivr Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I have Secretos just as a novelty. It's been a long time since I smoked an NC but if I was seeking out maduro I don't think Cohiba would get my vote.
craigos Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 my very first cuban was a genios - smuggled to me by a texan on his way back from spain. I remember the saltiness and the cocoa and fell in love with cubans, but never had another one that had that salty flavor that was divine. Have boxes of all three maduros in FOH humidor, will get one out in the next year hoping to rediscover this little gem.

Maybe that first one had that special taste because it was smuggled in a certain location???

dicko Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I am a big fan of what I have had (maybe 3-4 of each - prefer secretos and genios). price is a factor though. if you want a maduro hit plenty of good NC's on the cheap. but they are unique I will pay that!
MIKA27 Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Great thread Prez! I am a HUGE fan of the Genios and Secretos, the Magicos really IMO is a smaller Genios hence why I'd rather the latter. I love the Secretos and Genios because it's the perfect rich, chocolate/Mocha profile that no other cigar really can compare to. Where time is limited, I go the Secretos, when I have the time, I then go the Genios.
reliefdvm Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I love the Genios. I always have some in the humi. the price keeps me from smoking them more often. I liked the 08's better than some of the 09's I have but even the 09's are very tasty.
Rehman Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 It was like smoking Guinness stout, I thought. (Which may appeal to some more than others.)
Rogers72 Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 The Genios is among my favorite current production. If they weren't so expensive, I would smoke them all the time. At their price point, I don't buy them at all anymore. I just can't justify spending $20 on a cigar. If they were 300USD/box, I would go through them like candy corn.
Murri Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I have a box of Magicos from 08 stashed away. Totally forgot about these. Looks like it might be time to sample one.
CanuckSARTech Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 I've really liked the Secretos and have gone through a few small 10-boxes in the years right after the line's release. And I've got a partial 10-box and a 25-box in the humi, but I haven't touched them in well over a year. This thread has me hungry to try another one soon....
bigfunkyg Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Have a bit left of an 08 Box of Genios that have never lived up to potential. Looked like and smelled like they should be great but they suffered from burn and construction issues. Might pickup a 10 count in the near future to give them another go.
