Scdalak Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Beautiful Saturday here on the East Coast! Ventured out to watch my nephews Little League Baseball game with my family. Brought an 08 Cohiba Robusto with me, a few chairs and settled in nicely deep on the right field foul line ready to relax and smoke. There wasn’t another person around me for 50 feet.. With In 10 min of lighting it up I had 2 parents approach and ask me to stop as it “promoted smoking†to the children. Wasn’t the smell or smoke that did. I think it’s a bit ridiculous to be honest, but didn’t want to cause a fuss, so I had to place on the fence until the game was over! Grrrrrrrrrrrr… What is the world coming to!??
Styler Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I fail to see how simply doing something is the same as promoting it, it's not like you were going out of your way to look "cool" while smoking (I presume ). At some point in their lives those kids are going to see someone smoking a cigar, you can't hide them from the world. If you turned up eating a Big Mac would they accuse you of promoting junk food? There are some people out there who just cannot accept that people like us make a consious and educated decision to use tobacco products, but if it's not harming them in any way then it's really none of their business.
bc8436 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I'd have ran behind the trees and kept smoking there.
cigcars Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Man, that's ugly! Well, my fellow botl WE all still love you and support you. We'll all smoke a special one to you, and you only! SCREW those busy bodies! Like Styler said, what will they show up for a Big Mac too-? Not. Boy, the Pleasure Police!!
Puros Y Vino Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 The old "TOTC" arguement again... TOTC = "Think Of The Children". Those kids will learn far worse lessons and be exposed to worse behaviour amongst their peers. I grew up watching baseball, tobacco chaw and all...never picked up that habit.
Scdalak Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Thanks for the feedback,, Again, i was at the farthest point from the field not a parent , student, creature with in shouting distance.. I just dont get it..
gigabyte056 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Consider it as flattery, you are by far more influential to the kids then their own parents...
bassman Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Unless the park was a designated no smoking area, I would have told them to mind their own business. As you said, you were 50 feet away from anyone.

I just dont get it.. Oh it's easy to understand...you're a "smoker". You belong to a group that can be discriminated against because the gov't has singled you out as a pariah. Never mind that there are far worse offenders when it comes to clean air/environment. You acted reasonably IMO. Did you have your list of 50+ things to say to non smokers? Great post last week..forgot who posted it though. Some of the comebacks could have been handy. FWIW, you did the right thing in only that you weren't in a battle you couldn't win. Next time, hold a herf there.
IcedCanuck Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Nice cigar, sorry to hear about the incident. Cuddos to you for not wanting to rock the boat ... I'm not so sure I would have been able to handle that situation the way you did.
scinmyheart Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Unless the park was a designated no smoking area, I would have told them to mind their own business. As you said, you were 50 feet away from anyone. that would have been the point that I would have made, but it would not have been said as nicely they would probably have called the cops after I finished with them
cryinlicks Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 im in the northeast as well, and around here, there is a smoking ban at all fields.
Orion21 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I think you did the right thing because it wasn't your kid playing and it would have reflected poorly on your brother/sister and spouse if you had caused a scene. It's called good judgement and you practiced it at the moment in time.

I wasnt a parent and not part of this community so rather than embarass my brother I let it go.
cigcars Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 To pick up on what Bundwalla said earlier I DO feel for the poor cigarette smokers on all jobs these days. I mean, I can't stand cigarette smoke - it makes me cough. But I experience a sinking feeling in my heart for the poor souls putting on coats, hats, scarves, gloves, etc. to go outside in minus zero whether to stave off that nicotine fit attack. I'd like to see us just go back to the "designated smoking areas" indoors like we used to have. ***And I'll bet you these jackasses wouldn't have had JACK to say if it WAS a cigarette instead of a cigar!!!
Maron76 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Similar thing happened to me at my sons game. Only difference, I told them to go pound sand. I wish you would have done the same, perhaps a little bit more tactfully than I though The more we let people trample our rights the sooner we as cigar smokers will lose them completely. But I can understand you not wanting to cause a problem there. I think you did the right thing because it wasn't your kid playing and it would have reflected poorly on your brother/sister and spouse if you had caused a scene. It's called good judgement and you practiced it at the moment in time. Unless it was posted no smoking, SCD had every right to enjoy his cigar. He was being courteous and respectful of others. The only thing wrong was with the individuals who felt the need to impose their irrational and uneducated opinion because they have no life of their own. Perhaps they should blindfold their children in the car. The roadside of the freeways are riddled with sexualy provocative and alcohol promoting billboards. The cute girl in the car next to them could be wearing a white tube top two sizes to small and letting everyone know she is cold. Do you think they stop to say anything or complain? Hell no! It has just become socialy acceptable to **** on the tobacco consumer. If we dont start standing up for ourselves who will? I know that I should not be surprised anymore, but it still amazes me how big of balls some people have. End ranT Sorry guys, didn't mean to thread crap. This kind of stuff just gets me fired up.

Amen brother, Amen. We get caught off guard because they get to team up where its 2 or 3 of THEM against 1 of us. In this case, a courteous and respectful cigar smoker enjoying his day the way he wanted to. I'm sorry to hear your story SCD. It's not end of the world and you did do the correct thing by being respectful of their demands, but it's still unfortuante to be put in that kind of situation when all you wanted was to try and avoid confrontation in the first place.
cigarroverzulu Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I am surprised all the MILFs were not telling their kiddies "Thats what cancer smells like" run run.
First Lady Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I probably would not have been so polite, something to the tone of you frustrated %$@* I hate the Politcally Correct Police, they are getting so rightous it makes me sick honestly you were being respectful and smoking away from everyone and you we not loud, rude and a pig. Soon you won't be able to drink a soft drink or eat chips as that will promote obesity to children My god I grew up in the era with my parents (both of them and their friends) all smoking around us at the dinner table and I am fine... crazy
El Presidente Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I take a box of cigars with me (10 box of Sublimes) every year when we play Nudgee College who are the rugby powerhouse school in our conference. The coaches know that the year we beat them we are all lighting up post game. It looks like they will be vintage cigars before we ever get the opportunity
Vortigan Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Yep I'm in agreement with many here and give props to you for your tactful response in a situation where I'm not so sure I could have acted the same way.But then again, alone and faced with the smoking Nazis maybe it was the only reasonable course of action in this case.I've said it before but here it is again,it never ceases to amaze me how some of those amongst my colleagues (I'm a nurse) will castigate me for being a smoker whilst at the same time happily boast about how paralytic they were at the weekend.Strange how one "vice" is increasingly demonized and another it seems is to be celebrated and be proud of!! But that's my bug bear and a little off topic, sorry. Mike

CM125 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I think people carry it way to far, as a parent now it is me and my wife responsibility to guide our child in the right direction it is not society that is raising our child. If someone is doing something that we do not agree with we talk to our child. All in all you made the right decision I know the first thing that came to your mind was to say return your ass where you came from. Curtis
Habanakane21 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Better man than me. Unless the park doesn't allow smoking they can mind their own business. The **** that's on TV is 100 times worse than me smoking a god damn cigar. I'm sure those people that confronted you do some iffy things at home and around their kids. They just thought they'd be tough and say something to you....just to feel good about themselves. I live in Los Angeles...watching the evening news will corrupt your kid for a lifetime.
Maron76 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Soon you won't be able to drink a soft drink or eat chips as that will promote obesity to children My god I grew up in the era with my parents (both of them and their friends) all smoking around us at the dinner table and I am fine... crazy I remember as a child going up north to our cottage in the summer, every weekend with my parents, 2 1/2 hour car ride. Both my parents smoke and my mom would not allow a window to be opened to vent the smoke. It was hot out and they had the air on! LOL..... Could you imagine that happening now? They would come take your kids away!!
