pedromendes Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hello All! I am super excited about joining FoH. I've lurked for quite a while until I realized I could just join up! I've been smoking habanos for about 5 years - my first was a Parti de lux on the patio of the Hotel Nacional. My latest was a 10 year old Rafael Gonzalez lonsdale. Yeah, I've learned a lot. I've been to Havana a couple of times and can't wait to go back. To try to create that atmosphere at home, I started a cigar club amongst my buddies at work and in the neighbourhood and it's a regular event around my place in the summer. I work at CBC Radio here in Toronto and have done a few on-air pieces about cigars (I usually work behind the scenes as a producer). Last year a did a short bit about Correnti Cigars, the last handmade cuban factory in North America outside of Cuba, and just a couple of months ago I did a piece, as part of a series about masculinity, about my cigar group. Anyone interested can listen here: http://podcast.cbc.ca/mp3/manthropology_20110125_44308.mp3 Anyway, very excited to start contributing and learning.... Pedro
tmac77 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Welcome to FOH Pedro. Tom also in Toronto here. I would be very interrested to see your piece on the Correnti Cigars that you did here in T. While on the topic, did you try any of their cigars and if so how would you rate them. TOm
canadianbeaver Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Welcome Pedro from fellow Toronto smoker, CB
kiwiman911 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Hi Pedro I'm from montreal and just joined a couple of days ago...great site. If ever in montreal let me know will show a few good places to smoke a go CC
pedromendes Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Welcome to FOH Pedro.Tom also in Toronto here. TOm Thanks Tom (and everyone else). The CBC hasn't archived my Correnti piece online so I'm going to have a look and see if I can post it myself. As to their cigars... I tried two, a regular robusto, and a gordito that was wrapped in their special, 20+ year aged wrapper. They were fine, certainly had the Cuban taste, but one-dimensional and somewhat bland. Not bad, but not great either. However, the experience of going down there - like stepping back in time - and smoking something rolled right here in Toronto... well, everyone should try it!
Puros Y Vino Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Welcome DonPedro! Good timing. We're planning an event Mar 26 in Toronto.

ckearns Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Welcome Pedro. I'm a big fan of Radio 2 morning and evening shows. You guys are doing some great work over there. As I think Tom was alluding to, Correnti is a very curious place because its a place I always plan on visiting, but never do. Anyways, welcome aboard!

As for Correnti's I must have called them 3-4 times to plan a visit, see the rolling in action etc. Could never get around to it. There was a good article in the Toronto Star about a year ago. Don't see it online anymore though.
Peter11216 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Welcome. Those are some serious serious looks, in your photos. Looking forward to listening to the podcast. Also, best wishes for CBC. I don't mean to presume your position on the matter just because of your job, but I think CBC is a worthwhile institution, and I want it to stick around. All the Best, Pete
pedromendes Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Thanks, again, for all the warm welcomes! And the CBC props - yes, it's a great place to work and I'm very thankful to have the job. One big reason is they let me do stuff like this: here's my piece from last May about Correnti Cigars in Toronto
JohnnyC Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Welcome Don Pedro from another fellow Canadian. I just join the site a couple weeks ago and I believe you will find a great bunch of individuals on this site. Enjoy
