PigFish Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Over the past decade I have really moved 180 degrees off the norm, or the trend if you prefer. It makes me wonder if there are those like me here on the board. It used to be that I was a willing and eager partner for the "new" cigar to be released from H SA. Like many of you today... I was wanting, willing and eager to pay almost any price to acquire a 'first release' cigar. It was exciting to anticipate, to have the connections, regardless of where they may be released first, to get one of those boxes. Much of that I owe to my many friends that smoke worldwide. I would pensively wait for my box to arrive and usually dive right in. But even once developed over time I would find that the cigars contained were lesser than the everyday cigar that I was smoking. How can this be? Over the years I have lost all such anticipation for the new cigar. I blame H SA et al, for stripping from me the anticipation of the new cigar. They have blown it... perhaps not for you, but for me certainly. I have now such a strong reservation of new cigars that it almost hinges on resentment. Why replace what is tested and exceptional with what is untested and unimaginative? I am questioning rhetorically of course; it is the money! I smoke the real limitada cigars now, there is a likelihood that they will never be produced again, a lot of them, and earning a space in my humidor based solely on your newcomer status is almost impossible. As biased and ridiculous as it may sound, I dislike them even before trying them! Thanks for reading. -
reg Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 a simple answer would be you know which cigars you really enjoy, and those are the ones, I assume, you smoke on a regular basis. the new cigars, good, bad, great, just might not reach the level of your favorites, so they all pale in comparison. I know I am like this with beer. I love trying new beers, searching for great ones, but no matter how many I try I never find one I like as much as my current favorite.
Trevor2118 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 . Sounds very much like you are getting older It's a rather painfull condition affecting us all. The Clan Leask moto is: "Take your pills; grit you teeth; get on with life".
mazolaman Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Personally,I've only smoked 6 or 7 ELs,and only two of those I would say were a bit special. I suppose it can come down to marketing,ie, invigorating the market with new stuff. Sometimes that is the emperors new clothes. A lot of great products in the world stick to making one thing well,or at least have a limited amount of products.Concentrating on making that small field consistantly well. Personally, I've always admired that philosophy.
CanuckSARTech Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 ...It makes me wonder if there are those like me here on the board... Nope, Piggy, you're one in a million!!!

dB69 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Does that make Piggy a Limited Edition? The best of the day!
Dbone Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 I wouldn't exile cigars based on such subjective stereotypes brother. Continue to sample the newer stuff - even if just to reaffirm your stance. A book comes to mind, "Who moved my cheese" Who Moved My Cheese
investandprosper Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 I am relatively new to the hobby, just about a year, and I can confidently say that our thoughts run along the same plane Piggy. Over the past year, I tried a number of ELs and RRs. My humidor sports zero ELs, and only a couple RR singles which were decent, but I still prefer my regular production cigars. Perhaps I just had bad examples of those "special" cigars, but regardless, I don't see the sense in paying a premium for a sub-standard stick. I'm only 28, but am coincidently old fashioned. Proud of it too
PigFish Posted February 27, 2011 Author Posted February 27, 2011 I wouldn't exile cigars based on such subjective stereotypes brother. Continue to sample the newer stuff - even if just to reaffirm your stance. A book comes to mind, "Who moved my cheese" Who Moved My Cheese ... the problem is that they are my subjective stereotypes!!! I was kinda' referring to it as wisdom!!! -LOL I get your drift brother. Cynical, opinionated, quiet, wallflower... thin... patient, all accurately decribe me! To prejudge, unheard of! -Piggy
PigFish Posted February 27, 2011 Author Posted February 27, 2011 Piggy PPPPLLLEEEAASSSEEE!!!! Pretty please with sugar on top be sure to review the LE cigars Rob has sent you!!!I am dying for those reviews! I don't mind mate but it will take a while. Bwana's storage is way to wet for my taste. Given a preference I would let these sit no less than 6 months but seeing that I won't like them anyway ( ) there probably is no harm in doing them sooner. They are next to the 'contest' cigars in my singles area. I have to admit that the package smells very nice... Maybe Rob is using Ziplock Habanos Scent bags these days. Actually one of the cigars is a short Upmann EL. Bart sent me one of these and I have to admit I liked the cigar, assuming it is the same one. I can't keep up with EL's, nor do I try so when it comes to opine I will just post a pick and someone else can tell me what the hell they are. Being over 44 ring... I am pretty sure that they will be sub-par! He did send me one of those double tapered dog log figurados, the PCC RA. Unfortunately I have smoked about a half a dozen of these and I already figure them as mushy rot-gut cigars. Out of the 6 or so I have yet to finish one. I think they sport the EL flag and represent the breed pretty well; one wheel stuck in the sand, the others in the mud. -Piggy

The Magnum 50 and now the Serie D. No. 5 were already popular enough to be given a spot on the regular line-up and more cigars may follow. The cigars that you know and love have proven themselves over up to 40 something years, not all cigars that have been released over the past decades made it to our humidors, there were probably plenty of trials and errors and enough cigars that were canceled shortly after their introduction. We're the lucky ones, we don't have to buy every cigar that is released on the basis of it being new and exciting, we have forums and reviews and ratings. It might not be as convincing as trying one yourself, but it gives you a pretty good idea of which way the cigar is leaning at the moment. So don't waste your own time on the LEs and REs, if a cigar comes out that you'd "probably" like I'm pretty sure the whole forum will let you know 'The One' has come for you
LeafLover Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 I suppose I don't buy EL's and RR's because it seems too biased for me. Of course, it's going to be touted as the latest, greatest, rarest and most exclusive by Habanos SA. And, they can fetch higher prices by saying, this is rare leaf or these cigars are exclusive only to a certain area. It's a business and they're trying to make a profit. I'm just so leery of that kind of stuff. The adage "consider the source" always comes to mind. What's next? Habanos SA: This new EL is so rare because while mere seedlings, Castro himself came out to visit and chose this blend to be his favorite. Cha-Ching! I've been more interested in buying boxes of those that have been placed on the chopping block especially when people are giving it good lip service. Yah, I'll stick to my regular production faves as well as the "under the radar" habanos I love. Having said this, if they pump out an EL claiming the cigars have all been rolled by Latin America's finest female talk show hosts and America's hottest TV weather girls all dressed in nothing but Victoria Secret's new lace and string line (with pics in each box to boot)....I'm all in!
PigFish Posted February 27, 2011 Author Posted February 27, 2011 Piggy and ken ...damn straight! vs. Guess who! ...heh! Heh... heh! Gimmy an EL! Heh.. heh heh!
