Pictures from Emerald Queensland

Recommended Posts

Emerald is a in many ways a typical regional Queensland municipitality. population 10,900 with an industry based around mining services and a little citrus. Annual rainfall is only 490mm a year (19.2 inches per year).

Putting the current floods into perspective. It is only one of hundreds/thousands of communities. Thanks to mate John Kockanski for the photos.

The Queensland floods have been big news over here. Rob, Ken, Smithy, Lise - hope you guys aren't affected.

It almost looks like Bangladesh. Also understand that snakes are pretty cranky this time of year and crocs are enjoying their new habitats.

Hope the flood waters soon recede.

OMG, what's going on with the weather? Is this something that happens every 20 years or something like that (like the aussie dust storms) or does this NEVER happen?

We get the same thing here in Malaysia, on the eastern seaboard. Two states regularly spend 2 months of the year underwater, whenever the monsoons hit that side of Malaysia. But for us, there is so little that can be done, because the areas are naturally prone to flooding.

Flood happen every so often in Aus, miainly on the east coast (NSW, Qld). This just happens to be an extremely bad one. What really stings the banana benders is that they are still paying for the 2010 March flood.

The problem we have is that because of long years of drought, the soil can't absorb the water readily enough and won't drain away. Apparently we are going through a period of La Niña, so there's going to be a lot more wet weather for eastern Aus.

I was listening to an interview on the CBC (for those outside of Canada, our "national" broadcaster) with someone from Queensland and he mentioned that the water was up to 9 metres! (29.5ft). What is the source of the flooding? Heavy rains? From the pictures everything looks fairly flat so the water is either falling from the sky or this area is slightly below sea level? As far as I know, there is no snowfall in Australia. :cigar:

All gone, not very funny. :cigar:

I wish strength to the people living in there, and also elsewhere in the middle of disasters!

Source of flooding is rain. Throughout the state the ground is sodden from record spring rains and then a cyclone hit end of December turning into a rain deperession which hung around for 10 days.
