Montaigut Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Hi there snow friends, How do you deal with winter smoking if you are not blessed with an indoor smoking room? I: 1. Smoke only "shorties"? 2. Jump and stamp my feet a lot? 3. Drink a lot of fire water? 4. Seriously bundle up: snow suit, snorkel hood, Hot Paws, Sorel boots? 5. The heck with it I build a bonfire? 6. Winter? I'm Canadian eh!... 7. Use a good ol'e hot water bottle? 8. Lie down with my head in the fireplace? 9. Smoke indoors but don't exhale? 10. Build an outdoor sweat/smoke lodge.? 11. Am currently looking into relocating? 12. Fully support Global Warming? 13. .... 14. .... Seriously, how do you do it? Dan
Omskakas Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 And you're from France? Is there even a proper winter there? I: 1.) Don't smoke at all, or smoke far less 2.) Smoke shorties 3.) Dress according to the weather 4.) Buy more cigars 5.) Hate winter 6.) Wish summer was here already 7.) Want a place where I can smoke indoors
cigcars Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 *IF I were in a place where I couldn't smoke indoors at the pad I'm living in - I would just wait and get a hotel room where I can indulge...I'm just NOT gonna smoke outdoors unless it's a sunny day and/or with a friend or 3 or 4 who are also smokin'. And that would occur until the day I could - MOVE!!!
Montaigut Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 Paiva paiva Omskakas, I come from the land of hockey: there be snow in my genes mate! On my way south I stopped in France; when you're as old as I am you can't make it without a few stopovers... Kudos and thanks to you folks for the sauna. Cheers Dan
rckymtn22 Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I put the cigars on aging mode, look at the weather forecast for a warm day and if I get really desperate, I plug in the heater in the garage. On those warmish days I am reaching for a shorty. Usually too damn cold to be outside for the next four months.
Omskakas Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Paiva paiva Omskakas,I come from the land of hockey: there be snow in my genes mate! Ok, but I just checked the weather down there in France. It's still far above freezing level. What are you complaining about? (I admit it, it's not an ideal weather for a prominente)
audio1der Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 -Smoke shorter cigars -bundle up -fire up the propane space heater -forget about the blanket of white around me, surrounding myself instead with thoguhts of a warm carribean island where they roll the most tasty cigars in the world.
bigfunkyg Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I do smoke a lot less frequently during the winter months (November to March) than I do the summer months, which is usually once ever two weeks for sure. We have a setup in a garage with several infrared heaters and a propane heater and a TV to watch football. We are looking at increasing our setup to include a ceiling fan (to push warn air down) and exhaust fan (to keep air circulating) before things get really cold. It isn't pretty but it works to a certain degree. If it gets to -30* Celcius then it's just best to stay inside and not smoke.
cgarner Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 In the winter time when I smoke you can bet that I'll be soaking in my hot tub. I find that I smoke more in the cooler months than the hot months. Heat plus cigars don't mix all that well for me.

Nedule Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I'm like rckymtn22, cigars mostly go on hold till a warmer day, winter in my part of Canada is just damn too cold to lounge outside for 45min. I'd love to have a smoke this weekend but today it's -20C & -30C with the wind, so I don't think it's going to happen. Although I did insulate my shed this summer, just need to put a heater & see how it feels.
whiskeynwine Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I do smoke indoors but I definitely smoke less during the winter months. What I find hard to understand is the number of smokers that won't smoke in their own home. If you are clean about it, the smell goes away quickly. I'd rather smoke a cigar in the house than fry a fish or chicken wings.
Puros Y Vino Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 In the winter months my cigars get a lot of rest. If there's a day where its' above zero with no wind, I might light up a shorter cigar. Otherwise, I'd rather not smoke one if I have to rush it. We usually go down south in the winter. I'll pack up my travel humidor with a dozen cigars and go to town.
kjellfrick Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I smoke in my cave in the winter, thus no real change in the number of cigars I burn up. Tuesday's my prominente day 'cause that day the wife works late and I can easily smoke a three hour cigar. I don't agree that the smell goes away if you ventilate. All my stuff in my smoking room smell of cigar smoke and I have ample ventilation. The solution is easy, though...just tear it all down and restore it. Throw the smelly stuff out and start all over again. What's the big deal?
Erm310mce Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 The winter time is a great time to stock up the humi. I tend to smoke much less in the cold. I have a heated room I can smoke in, however I enjoy smoking outside much more. I have started to move towards smaller cigars, regardless of weather. Life is so busy now it's hard to find more than 1 hour to devote to a smoke.
BlueClaw Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 i live in NY about 20 miles from Manhattan. It doesn't get as cold as Canada but it can get pretty cold. during the winter months i do tend to smoke mostly Petite Coronas that have good flavor like Bolivar, Por Larranagas and if i can sneak in a Robusto here and there, i'm good. i smoke in my garage with no heater. this season i want to try a couple of these cigar friendly restaurants but it can get costly and have to buy their smokes. i don't like smoking outside in the cold too much when the wind is kicking up since i like the cigar smoke to linger all around me.. i do smoke less in the winter...
jawofboston Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I light a nice fire in my fireplace, put my feet up on my leather ottoman, and light up a double corona. So no, my cigars don't get shorter.
fugwumpy Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Before I moved, I would sit on the porch tucked into a corner out of the wind and have a go or sit in the garage with the door half open (so the wifee didn't scream too much about the smell). Now I have an out building I sit in with a propane heater. But I do smoke shorter cigars in the winter.
nonameno Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Hello Fellow FOHers, This is a question I was wondering as well. Personally, when winter sets in, smoking is over until Spring returns. It is just too cold to be outside at all to enjoy a good cigar. It kills me to see The Prez, Ken and Smithy out on the deck enjoying a fine cigar and a drink, in lovely Aussie weather. I am living vicariously through you guys all winter. Thank you, Curtiss

El Presidente Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 When winters three week spell hits hard and it reaches 20 degrees Celsius I look at putting on a Jacket
