I could submit a review for a thin-gauge cigar. Dip 4, Partagas SDC, Grandes de Espana, PLPC, etc.

I might pass on a 'quantification' sheet. I prefer qualitative assessments for subjective phenomena. Not hating on your idea Pig, but I would prefer to see individual assessments and creative interpretations.

Up to you though man. It's your horse (so to speak)!

el barbudo I just don't know.... Your selection is a bit small... we might have a problem with finding something everyone has :2thumbs:

You may be right there..... Send me the HDM Churchills BLP ABR 08 box from the HQ list, if they are still available. You know the card number and address....

I wouldn't want any lady thinking I have a small selection, now would I?

Sir Barbudo, but do you have any Swisher Sweets!!!! Do ya! Just joking. A picture of your humi with all those boxes would be

the ultimate in Cigar XXXX Porn.

I'm In Ray. Oldest cigars I have are 07's to the newest April 10's.

Limited variety but one of mine might make it on your list: Boli PC, PLPC, H Upmann Mag 46, Dip 4's, Parti Shorts, JL#1's, Partagas (P2, SD4, 898V), Boli CE, RGCE, Trini Reyes, SLR A, SCdlH El Prinicpe, Punch RS#11, RASS, Monte 2, Cohiba Siglo VI, and Cohibas in the glass box.

First, everyone is welcome. I am thinking about two groups due to the response... possible fat and skinny. Will do a little accounting of who's got what here this evening.

Hi

Why split it up into two groups, isnt it better that we all smoke the same cigar the more people the more thoughts about the cigar. Then we can do this again in say 2-3 weeks and change the cigar. Maybe start with skinny and next time a fat one, or change the brand. I just dont see a resone to split it up into two groups.

What do you guys feel about using a tasting sheet? I am gonna' post mine and while it is not perfect, more or less a work in progress, I can explain how it works and it will be easier to correlate data, post replies and quantify the data.

I use another tasting chart, but this one works fine for me (is it a pdf?), but again if we want to correlate and quantify we should not split us up into two groups (actually, we need to be 37 people if we want to do any correlation, but that might be on the matemathical side and we dont have to go down that road :2thumbs: )

Looking forward

Points well taken my friends. The goal is manifold. One, enjoy some cigars. Two, get a bunch of people involved!!! Three enjoy picking over some data in the end; scientific or not.

Lets get started!

We smoke one or two cigars. The cigars are Bolivar Royal Coronas and/or the Bolivar Petit Coronas. Common cigars that most people have.

All reviews will be sent to me for me to post no later than 9-25. The sheet will be an option, if you use it fine, I will post 150 dpi pictures of the two pages as I did before if you use it. If not I will post your narrative (whatever you send me). No pictures, we all know what a Robusto and a PC looks like, and I will likely post Mr. Capitalist's cigar picture on Mr. Socialist's (faux names used for levity!) review anyway.

The reviews are to be sent to: smokedpigfish(use the @ symbol here)hotmail.com (I don't want a crawler picking up this address and getting it all over the web).

They are to be formatted like this:

Subject: (Your name here) cigar review of Bolivar XXX or YYY whatever you choose.

Body: Your name, the cigar you reviewed, date and code of the cigar.

Your review, or attach the sheet. No salutations or words of endearment... please! -LOL

Try to make it easy on me and don't make me have to dig through the body for the cigar info and edit anything.

Lastly, to make sure you got the email address right, email me and let me know you are in and what you will be smoking. I will start a new thread and put your name in as we wait for the reviews to come in. I would like you to try the sheet. Since it is hard to improve a thing without input I would be happy for input on the sheet sent to me via email if you have the inclination and time to do so.

Thanks for taking part in the review. -Ray

The quantitative supports the qualitative by use of the sheet. Page one is more or less focusing on specifics while page two aggregates the data to form a narrative review, hopefully satisfying both aspects. We see things similarly here. The sheet was designed for a group review of the same cigar specifically with a goal of unifying the thoughts of free spirits and imaginative thinkers and forcing them to quantify for data collection purposes.

In many ways it represents the exact opposite of what cigar smoking is to many of us. That is work instead of relaxation; concentration instead of imagination! I have learned to use it as an aid instead of a tool for a chore, but I wholeheartedly agree with many unfavorable assessments of using a taste sheet, even my own!!!

Cheers mate! -P

Great idea, Piggy. I would love to join in but I'm right in the preperations for my vacation and my only Boli right now in my humi would be a Cororonas extra. Count me in next time. Btw really interesting to see your review sheets, I've been meaning to ask you what they look like. Also went with your advise to scramble up my palate with some skinnies. I'm on a Monte especiales right now. Great smoke! Thanks for recommending.

Have fun y'all!

Cheers, Michael

Downloaded the form, filled it out but couldn't save it. Tried to save as text but just created a text document with the details of the form, not my entries. I don't have a printer (paperless environment here you see, save the trees!) so couldn't print it out - besides, having to print it out so you can then scan it back in again is a bit arhaic don't ya think :o

I guess in order to save the form once it is filled in you need the Adobe PDF writer and not just the freebie reader :D Nice form though, would use it again if it were possible to save the changes!

OMG tight deadline, i am not sure if I will make that, (why the hurry?)

cheers

I was trying to get everyone involved in Bwana's contest for the free style review and cigars. Team player ****, you know? I know... totally unlike me!! Make an effort Sandy, you can do it!!! I have not smoked mine either.

Maybe Bwana can be bribed to extend the contest a few days. I'll ask the boss aka Lisa!!! -P

This I don't understand. The form has no security measures at all. What you might want to do is check your reader. I believe that my form is back dated to version 7. Perhaps you are using an older version and that is why it won't save. I am one of those guys that has been using Acrobat from day 1 so I have worked out the kinks on my end a long time ago.

For kicks I will see if I can save a backwards compatible version to an older state and see if that helps you. You might check your Acro Reader and see what version it is and get the latest. It is still free. -Ray

Sure Ray, pick my least favorite marca with cigars I don't even have at home! :D

Oh well, I look forward to seeing posted reviews!

Well may man I tried to fit you in and wanted the GdE review but it appeared that I was attempting too big a piece in too short a time. Go hold up the mini-mart or something... intimidate a smaller sailer, trade some porn, somethin's gotta' work!!! Improvise, adapt, overcome!!! -LOL

I agree that a quantitative sheet can keep a qualitative analysis more focused. My issue was with any attempts to apply statistical inference to the resulting data. Way too many confounding factors. Even if we all smoked out of the same box, there would be an infinite number of ways the data set was compromised by 'reality.' A sample size of 37 means nothing if your units of analysis (cigar), methods of sampling, and various other experimental conditions are not accounted for...which is next to impossible....which is why I like focused qualitative methods for many social experiments. Lol. No offense man. Just sharing some opinions.

Lol. Part of what I do when I punch my time-card is look at improper inferences using jacked-up quantitative analyses. Lies....damned Lies....statistics. I will refrain from conducting a graduate seminar and get off my ivory soapbox. In my defense....you seem interested in these issues so ... enjoy!!

Regarding Bolivar.... I am due for a 50 cab of BPC.... but I am currently out. I might have to do a BCE or one of those German Especiales R.E.s (yeah yeah I am not a big RE guy but when given to me..... I smoke em!).

Salty:

Here is a backward compatibility file back to reader v5.0. While this form is simple it does have a lot of form data in it. This should print... but you gotta' be allowed to use paper... -LOL It should also save and has no security features at all that would stop it.

Hope this works for ya'. If not just copy the narrative and email it to me! -R

Have to agree with you here mate. The fact is there is little objective or quantitative here in our hobby, perhaps except the price. And yes I have an interest is such things as well and don't mind at all the academic exchange. I am looking at it this way. If one can 'judge and score' ice dancing at the Olympics, we have gotta' be able to come up with something more objective in cigar reviewing! As I frown on any 'sport' that is graded by a panel of judges, for the sake of consistency, I feel pretty much the same regarding the subjective and arbitrary rating of cigars. It is simply a matter of opinion. You will note that when I review, I too tend to stick to terms of endearment or disdain, terms relative to my perception and resist a numerical rating system which truly cannot be consistent with that of another.
