bolivr Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Super quick review before I have to get back on the roof and try to tarp over a hole before the next rain shower... Had a good weight in the hand, nicely bunched, even through the length, a little firmer at the head. At cold there is barnyard and aged tobacco. The test draw surprised me with milk chocolate, quite distinct. On light up there was just straight new leather over the solid tobacco, some vanilla through the nose. Quite enjoyable so far but needed a relight for no good reason after about half an hour - then pow ! blast after blast of flavour, could not put it down. Needed another relight - no problem I am chasing that flavour and can't get the flame to it quick enough. Beautiful strong Upmann flavour to the last couple cm. A ripper smoke
Cambridge1 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Thanks for the review. The Mag 46 is one of my favorites. I'm sitting on a beautiful HQ box that I'm dying to open.
Habanos2000 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 bolivr, I concur 100%. What a smoke, full of every aspect I look for in a cigar, flavor, complexity, aroma, plumes of smoke, just great!
Colt45 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 A fave of mine as well, and I'm glad to hear more recent vintages are doing well. (I still can't get used to the red bands on these )
mbrody Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Recent Mag 46's have been stellar smokes! Last night I sampled an 09 Mag 50. It was a little on the wet side, but the pre-light draw had the most amazing cocoa flavor. They will soon become flavor MONSTERS! Thanks for the review...
micha Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I totally fell in love with the Mag 46. Just ordered a box of HQs from Czar. One of my absolute favorites.
CBL Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 It's weird, I read a lot of posts of people LOVING this cigar. I've had one after a nice BBQ that was amazing (with a new band) And I've had one in Hong Kong with an old band that was horrible. Maybe these should be smoked fresh? Gotta give them another chance soon! I've also never been a fan of the Magnum 50, but I have a feeling I should look into those again as well Love the Magnum 48 though
CanuckSARTech Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Very nice, and great quick review. Mine are the newer, double banded, tubos versions - May 2008 "OBE" box code. Great stuff. These are sure to be in a constant rotation from here on out.
Disburden Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Definitely on my list of need to try(s), thanks for the review!
Dbone Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Thanks for the review. I've been on the fence about trying these. Now I have a reason to get a box an an excuse for the wife ready, "but Boli said they where so good!". Don't be surprised if she comes looking for ya.

While they are great young, they are totally amazing at the age of 8-10. I also loved the classic understated elegance of the old band...
redlir Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 I must have had some lackluster ones.. I sampled both a 46 and 50 last month from the local shop and neither had any distinct flavor.. or anything really to make them memorable. I guess I"ll have to revisit these!

Outside of the Sir Winnie...the 46 and 50 are my two favorite HUps...do give them another try. Although I have to say...unlike most others I tend to prefer the 50 over the 46.

I'd have to say that selecting the "better" ones plays an important part as far as my experience is concerned. Specifically regarding the M46's I have, they're PSP quality and out of the 20 or so I've smoked so far only 1 has been average, they rest blew my socks off.
Mr.T Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Great review of a great cigar....my dad and I are going through an 09 batch that are stellar! Beautiful dark wrappers with a strong barnyard, leather and toasted tobacco aroma.....In fact I think I will light one up tonight....

The box I recieved has had some tight draw issues. I think I will order some 08 boxes.
jmsremax Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 I thoroughly enjoyed the only 07 HU Mag 46 I had a few nights ago. I will def be looking out for more.
Omskakas Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Quite enjoyable so far but needed a relight for no good reason after about half an hour - then pow ! blast after blast of flavour, could not put it down. I smoked (09) 46 few days ago and had a similar experience. About half way through I was blown away with rich, complex flavours for awile.
redlir Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I picked up another 46 tubos today at the corner store and am going to revisit it.
