El Presidente Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Ringing COHIBAR now in Sydney to get my MasterCard back which I left behind the bar Tuesday night. My memory has really gone to crap over the past couple of years. Is this normal in your mid 40's? Do you ever get it back? Do you remember
Habanakane21 Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 My wife is constantly asking me if I remember certain events that happened to my kids as they've grown up. I always say no. To be honest with you I don't. I've had several concussions throughout my football playing days and my dr says this may be the cause of memory loss. I cannot even go on amusement part rides anymore. I just get too sick. I'll be 40 this year and I know it's only going to get worse.

Do you remember I can't answer that mate, but I'll let you know in around 6-10 years time! It's easy to forget your card behind the bar when you've been partying most of the night. Lucky you didn't lose it in a bet.....
Guest rob Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Hey Sydney people!!! Get to Cohibar now - bar is still open!!

mazolaman Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I'm afraid jazz cigarettes did for mine! And anyway, who are you?,erm who am I.......?
mkz Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I constantly forget everyday stuff and I havent turned 30 yet... At this rate I should be glad if I remember my name when Im 40.
dcse Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 In the mid 40's and still no change. However, I have always found it difficult to remember the really important stuff, while all the unimportant stuff seems to stick forever. OK my hair is getting grayer every month, last month I even lost a part of a tooth during dinner
bunburyist Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I saw a programme many moons back with an experiment on the memories of old timers. It was found, after 8 months of trials, that the placebo group had no real change/slight loss in memory function when given pretty extensive testing. The other group, which had been required to eat a small bowl of berries (strawberries in this case, but I think most will do) resulted in a significant improvement in memory ability. Something big like 20-30% better. Berries are crammed full of anti-oxidants and vitamins anyway so may as well give it a go if you have memory issues. Plus, not exactly a chore is it!

Plus, not exactly a chore is it! take your berries in liquid form! i read somewhere that your memory actually remembers the 'memory' of the last time you remembered the specific memory (bar presumably the first time you remember something which would be based on that actual event). no idea if that is true but it would help explain why our memory distorts things.
bunburyist Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 take your berries in liquid form! better for the no doubt countless legions of FoH members who have less than 3 teeth as well.
Ryan Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 take your berries in liquid form! Does gin count? How much do I need to drink?
Stalebread Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I tell people that my memory has so many holes in it I could use it to drain pasta. The better news is that, now, scientists are telling us that brain cells can and do re-generate. Conventional wisdom was that once brain cells died they were gone for good. I guess there's hope.
thechenman Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I'll be 40 later this year, and I can definitely say that my memory is going. Little things and big things. It has not been dramatic, but enough to notice. I figure I'll be okay though as long as i don't leave my kids in some parking lot or airport somewhere.
Loki Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I turned 41 this year and the grey matter seems to be doing ok. It seems for the past 2 years or so I have had old memories pop up out of the blue. They are very vivid and detailed. I quit smoking the green about 2 1/2 years ago which I am sure has something to do with it. Ambition returning with a vengance is also a side effect.
LeafLover Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I know drinking alcohol kills brain cells that I don't believe ever regenerates. Not good for me as up until a month ago, scotch or vodka has been almost a daily occurence for me since my early twenties. Yes, I do notice difficulty in remembering things. And, like habanakane, my wife has asked me things about kids, "do you remember when...." I can only shake my head with absolutely no recollection whatsoever. I try to rationalize, "oh I don't remember some things because it really doesn't matter". But, I also forget even if it is important. Sad. I asked my doctor if there is medication I can buy. Friends told me gingkoboloba is good for memory. I tried it, but honestly I forget to take them too. It's a killer for me when it comes to work as well. Thankfully I have excellent staff to remind me of things. I don't ever forget to thank them, quite generously and quite often as a matter of fact.
bassman Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 The older you get, the more stuff you have to forget. And I love those "jazz cigarettes". Probably doesn't help.
Colt45 Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 My memory has really gone to crap over the past couple of years. Have you ever considered that it may just be in your nature? Let's have a look....... Forgot wife's 40th birthday. Lost cell phone (how many times?) Forgot daughter was on back of scooter, crashing with cigar in one hand, glass of wine in other. Forgot you were drinking and smoking while riding said scooter. Forgot credit card. Etc. So, perhaps it really is as simple as your genetic make up. Or the fact that booze is usually involved.........
Habanos2000 Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I've left credit cards at restaurants before as well. Don't be too concerned about that. But I'm going on 47 and am to the point at times that I think I might be coming down with alzheimers! I'm not too worried when I can't remember geometry when trying to help my 8th grade son do his homework, but it's the simple, stupid stuff I forget that drives me nuts. Like bringing in the mail and then not remembering where the hell I put it!
laficion Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Rob, I know what you mean, I'm now 60 and with my wife, for the last 39 years, everytime she has asked me what I was doing all those nights out, I've had a memory block. Do you think I should go and see a doc ?
Professor Twain Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Don't forget about the phenomenon of state dependent memory. If you get drunk again you may remember where you lost your card when you were drunk. State Dependent Memory

Warren Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I'm 50 and my memory isn't the best. I have a work diary that I use to keep track of things. I keep forgetting to write in it.
