So bored at work, and motivation is at a bit of a low with 2 weeks left to fly out and it being ramadhan and all.

I need something to light a small amount of charcoal for shisha smoking purposes so i'm making a little coal light contraption. No idea if the metal these tins are made of is strong enough, i doubt it, i think it'll melt, but we'll find out anyway.

Nescafe tin as the base.

Insides to show where the cut has been folded in so i don't shred my hands into a billion pieces.

Milo tin top. A few holes on the side for added air flow.

Base totally removed, so it's straight through.

End product.

Straight through view through both.

Pretty sure that you will burn right thru that. If you can find some steel, it would be better.

Edit: I should add, steel thicker than the can you are using. And punch some holes in the sides too.

That really reminds me of many contraptions I've seen made to smoke green leaf products...

surprised.gif HEY, ANUBIS!!! Look - I like you! DON'T LIGHT THAT FLIMSY THING UP WITH ANY KIND OF FLAMING MATERIAL. I know. I can attest to that fact that I once bought some real myrrh and frankincense resin, bought what I figured was a thick, solid enough glass ash tray (about 5/6 in. thick), and to make a long story short, almost burnt my house down! Smoke was EVERYWHERE - although, it was the most fragrant, pleasant smoke ever! The ash tray split right in half - I mean straight down the middle and plopped on the carpeted floor. I finally learned to start consulting with people who've done these things before to know what kinds of metal materials to get, and so on. Just my humble 2 cents.

If it's coconut charcoal, with the amount to be used, it should be safe. Though, if you stuff the tin full of charcoal, that will burn thru in time.

Hahahah... thanks for the warnings people. This method has been tried and tested. SUCCESS!!!! It works a treat, need to break it in a bit I think thought to get the tins paint all burnt off. Also am thinking of doing a version 2.0, where the top bit is the full tin with the holes in the bottom of it, and the bottom tin is straight through one with the top cut off it... makes carrying the coals easier.

And trust me, the first thing i did upon commencing this task was get the Emergency Response Team manager to send some folks to my house and ensure my fire extinguishers were all charged, add some extra ones, and test the fire alarms.

Version 2.0 in action. The top milo tin has a base with holes in it so it can be carried around like a basket of coals.

The stores guy is getting suspicious as to why a guy who's fasting is booking out so many milo tins.

Excuse my ignorance Mus, but what exactly do you do with this?

To smoke shisha, you need to use coals. This little contraption allows me to quickly light a handful of charcoals for shisha smoking purposes. If i was really keen i could use it to light starter coals for my bbq as well i guess.

Wouldn't do that, Mus. If you fill the tin with charcoal, the temp will easily get to 1000oC when the tin is fully lit.

Here's a pic I took last week of some charcoal I was testing. Temps easily got up to 900oC before being fully light.

I'm not intending on packing the thing full of coals, it'll only have 4 to 6 coals in it... just enough for a shisha smoking session.. I hate lighting the barbecue all for a handful of coals. I would use a gas burner, but it's a bit excessive to get a gas burner purely for lighting coals for shisha :P

Thats a cool coal lighter you got there fuzz!! Our bunnings one at home is no where near as well ventilated as that... it only has a few holes. One of these days i'll drill some more into it.

Is that just wood that your using in the coffee tin to light the coals in the milo tin?

Maybe you need to build a Quiks tin and put some kindle in that to light the wood to light the charcoal.

... just an uninformed suggestion.

It is small pieces of wood yes... My backyard has heaps of leaves and small twigs... so my standard fire lighting technique is get a wad of toilet paper, douse in olive oil, add some leaves etc ontop, then add small sticks...lights up like a charm....

It's the Weber Rapidfire charcoal starter. I got it at my old job when they were selling off all the samples. Paid $5 for it!

The Bunnings one is pretty crap. Only $10 cheaper than the Weber version, and nowhere near as effective. With all the ventilation holes, I can get my charcoal going in a about 10 minutes. Today, I managed to get some charcoal to max out my temp gun at over 1000oC! (over 1800oF)

I use my gas stove for lighting shisha coal - works perfectly.
