Wil Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I've recently started drinking tea while I smoke, if only to limit my alcohol consumption! I've been pleasantly surprised how well cigars and tea go together. I particularly like the maltiness of Assam teas. I've tried Darjeeling but don't quite 'get' it yet - too subtle perhaps. Right now I'm sitting outside on a warm summer night enjoying a PLP with a cup of honeybush tea. Goes beautifully with the cigar. Any tea connoisseurs out there?
Perla Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Of course my Dear. Love my Lady Grey Tea with a drop of milk & sugar. On the green tea side its Oolong tea or good Jasemine tea.
westg Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Yep...is a great pairing. Of late I have been drinking Chai tea and Madagascan vanilla.. I also like Pai Mu Tan, loose leaf white tea..Gives your palate that strong earthiness that goes so well with cigars.
CBL Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I used to drink a lot of green tea while smoking when I lived in Taiwan, now that I'm back in Europe I tend to stick to coffee, but tea and cigars go together great! An iced honey green tea with a nice medium bodied smoke, or a pot of hot dark green tea with a full bodied stick.
Troels Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I drink tea with my cigars as default - even if I have a stronger drink I´ll bring tea with me. I´ve seen someone post that Pu erh tea should be something speciel - have yet to try it, but from what i´ve read about it it has similarities to cigars (in terms of aging potential, range og flavours, collectibilty, vintages etc.

I've seen discs of pu erh tea that would make a box of Behikes look like a tin of short fillers price-wise. My aunt gave a friend of mine, who is both a cigar collector and budding tea-enthusiast a couple of small discs, but I have yet to try any of that tea myself....
khomeinist Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Assam and oolong are my favorite teas to pair with cigars. I like Assam with Partagas. Oolong with Upmann or Diplo. I generally prefer coffee beverages with Bolivar or Monte.
mazolaman Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Me too, a green tea, or a mild tea. like an oolong.
Wil Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Have just picked up some 'Taiwan Summer Oolong'. Very subtle flavours. Looking forward to trying it with a mild cigar.
LLC Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Normally I have an Americano but if I do have tea with a cigar it would be a Mighty Leaf Bombay Chai tea.
semery74 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Nothing goes better with a fermented product like another fermented product such as tea. My personal best is a Aged Ripe Pu'erh with a 10+ year old havana.
mk05 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Nothing goes better with a fermented product like another fermented product... Since I have liked everything you've written, I will take your advice and eat kimchi with my cigar.
khomeinist Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Yeah. I dunno bout the whole fermented-fermented relationship. Distilled products are often fantastic with cigars. Pu ehr is an interesting product. Minus that whole Pu thing.... It's a bit umm ripe and earthy.
maverickdrinker Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 wow! Very cool topic. Never thought to pair tea with a cigar. Might have to try this soon. Onto the chinese market tomorrow. Thanks for the discussion
Charltonc Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Chai tea and Arnold Palmer ( unsweetened black tea with homemade lemonade).
mk05 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I was just joking though! I thought there was a tea topic started by thealejandro or graham_uk a while back, but I can't seem to find it. Personally, I am not a fan of tannin + tannin...makes my mouth go wonky. I do like Hong Kong milk tea though, takes the bite out.
Wil Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 I thought there was a tea topic started by thealejandro or graham_uk a while back, but I can't seem to find it. Yeah I searched for it too but couldn't find it.
Troels Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Yeah I searched for it too but couldn't find it. It might be within a discussion of non alcoholic beverages in general
mk05 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I read through that thread. This thread was pretty specific.
Danston Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 So im the only one that drinks Yorkshire tea with a cigar?
mazolaman Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 So im the only one that drinks Yorkshire tea with a cigar? Love a cup of Yorkshire Gold.
Wil Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 Love a cup of Yorkshire Gold. Me too. Always bring it back when I've been in the UK (costs about $12 for 50 tea bags here!)
DocJ Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I've enjoyed this particular type of black tea, Lapsang Souchong. It's got an extra smoky flavor because the tea leaves were smoke dried over pinewood fire in the process of production. The smoky aroma, I think, goes wonderfully with cigars! Also rumor has it, it was Sir Winston Churchill's preferred tea for pairing with his cigars.
LGC Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I like jasmine black tea with some sweetened condensed milk, when I don't feel like coffee. I'll do pu'ehr as well sometimes. I picked up some old stuff when I was in China. It was quite pricey!
Othello Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I love green tea with a cigar! I get mine directly from Hibiki-an in Japan. I like the Sencha in the morning or afternoon, and the Houjicha ( Bancha ) in the evening,as it is roasted and low in caffiene. Good stuff! Many times I like coffee with a stronger cigar, and the tea is a nice change of pace. http://www.hibiki-an.com/
