egg nog and oysters

Recommended Posts

i know these were separate posts but i thought i should join them for these purposes.

a great mate had his annual birthday lunch yesterday - always puts on a wonderful event with stunning wines - though the days of magnums of 45's, margaux back into the 1840's, endless 78 la tache and so on are no more.

we kicked off with brilliantly fresh oysters from pipeclay bay in tassie and i have to apologise for my insistence that a little lemon and nothing else be served with them. i am now of the view that it is also permissible to douse them in caviar. had a couple of magnums of gosset and 02 paul bara champers to go with them.

there followed the usual parade of hedonism and whilst, i usually severely disapprove, on this occasion i was prepared to let it slip (i usually disapprove because i am not usually at such events). won't go into details but bottles of prum, lafon, rousseau chambertin, de vogue musigny, la mission, mouton, lafleur and so on (be fair, there were 8 of us).

then the egg nog. i quite like egg nog but never had it done better. it was done as an 'egg nog creme brulee' and was superb - better still was that it was matched with 1990 yquem and also the 2001 yquem - which i am convinced is one of the greatest wines ever made.

then finished with a quinta do noval national 85 VP before back to the balcony to drink the back-ups and i pulled out a few of the remaining hamlets (also to help celebrate jose and ingrid's wedding from afar).

wonderful day.

AHHHH the Good Life!!! I too have an appetite for seafood. Spent a good amount of time yesterday dousing fresh shrimp with spicy cocktail sauce and washing it down with a bloody mary.

Ken...sounds absolutely decadent. While I am not a fan of egg nog, the conept of serving it up in creme brulee form is fascintating and something that I would definitely try. However outside of the oysters, I envy you the experience of drinkin the 90 and 01 yquem. A fantastic wine. I've never sampled a year, or a bottle for that matter that I did not thoroughly enjoy. I still think back fondly of my days working as an i-banker during the dotcom bubble. Back then yquem used to flow like water. Those were the days...sadly...while I don't miss the hour, I do miss the wines.
