Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of getting a box of 10 special cigars to smoke on every birthday of this child for 10 years (my first... due any day now!) - you know reflect on the ageing process of both ;-)

Seen a few old threads on similar topic but I'm looking to find out what would be the best 08/09 production box of 10.

Best if not overly expensive (no Gran Reservas on my budget ;-), doesn't have to be a DC but large enough to make it an event. Looking for a great vintage of cigar that will smoke well enough now but will age well and not just die out in 5-6 years like some do.

I call on the wisdom of the tribe ... What do you recommend based on recent smoking experience?

(e.g. I have noticed mentions of 2008 Partagas 8-9-8s and Lusitanias, Mag50s, doing well - any others out there?)

Thanks!

Congrats!

given these cigars will have the time to age gracefully:

* 10 box of Cohiba Maduro Genios

* 10 box of Partagas Serie P no 2

I like the idea of the Genios. You can write an inscription on the inside of the lid of the lacquered box which is a lovely piece of Cigar Art in its own right.

It's a great idea and the ones you mentioned - Party 898V and Lusis were what popped into my mind as the good robust smokes that will last that sort of time and be worthy of a reflective hour or so.

You may also consider the LGC range in 10 count boxes if you want something lighter. The Tainos though large enough may fade about 6 years out - just a suspicion - other members may be able to confirm or deny. Medaille #1 may turn out to be too shy and retiring for the occasion; it a personal choice thing obviously.

Auditioning a few singles of each might be an idea :)

Well, not being familiar with your personal tastes, I'll recommend a few that have served me well in large formats.

Vegas Robaina Don Alejandro

Bolivar Immensas

Partagas Lusi

Congrats.

These aren't '08 or '09, and they're not cheap, but you're talking about a pretty special occasion.

I would consider the '06 Cohiba Piramides.

Frenchkiwi,

Congrats to you my friend on your soon-to-be new addition. I am in the same club with my second son due on January 1st.

I have an idea that I would like for you to consider: In the Premium Select Program, Prez has a box of Sir Winnies, SMG OCT 08 that I commented about purchasing recently. Of course, the price is a little steep given that I usually buy Partagas Shorts, Punch RS12 and SLR Regios. Anyway, would you consider going in on half of this box with me? Then we can have quite a few top-notch sticks to smoke over the next decade or so for half the price, or $193 USD each. Take a look for yourself and let me know if you are interested.

Yeah i've got a small box 10 Secretos - def. a nice box... but not having smoked a Genios - are they worth the extra $$?

And (interesting question) as they are already aged would they last the distance ?

[Genuine questions i have no idea - i'm sure you do!!]

PSP#2s I've had a few singles/tubos now and still haven't had one with any flavour at all - unlucky so far

thanks for the help!

Congrats frenchkiwi! I've bought 2 boxes of 10 898s in the past six months and they're smoking quite well (Oct 08 and Mar 09). My box of Lusis from Feb 08 aren't really ready; beautiful, dark and oily, but too much ammonia still.

Auditioned a LGCno1 just last weekend actually :D already working through a box of 25 from 2000 though. love'em. surprised again at how strong they get at the very end for such a mellow cigar!

Also have some disappointing 898Vs from 05 and waiting on a miracle of time - unlikely - prob better off buying a new box!

might try this one Lusitania i have lurking from a sampler somewhere... or if the baby comes today :o have it then!

When I think special event, I think Cohiba. How about a 10 box of Siglo VI? Supposed to age well...

I have yet to have one with age...so I can't vouche for em'

I recently purchased a box of Partagas Salomones for a similar reason. I don't have any kids but I expect this box to last me 6-8 years.

Congrats to you! I know this was mentoned before, but my suggestion would be the Montecristo Sublimes LE 2008. Being and LE it is already somewhat aged, but I feel has the potential to get so much better. On top of that, the ones I have smoked indicate to me that they are ready to smoke now. I've already gone through a box of these. Lastly...the come in a 10 ct. box.

Congrats on the soon-to-arrive rugrat.

I'd go the Genios, though you could find a 50 cab of something else. Smoke one every year, and when he/she's ready, you can share the experience.

Sorry mate, I'm down to my last one. Honestly though, a very special smoke.

Congrats again on your happy occasion.

I definitely agree regarding the 50 cab idea, and with a much more moderately priced cigar. I would strongly suggest a cab of Bolivar Corona Extra's. They will be great now and even better if stored properly in their cab for many years to come.

It is often said that first ideas are the best.

In this case, I think you were right on with your initial opinion.

You mentioned a 10 box. Not all that many available.

IMHO, for both consistancy, richness, and ability to age with grace,

go for Partagas, either the Lusitanias or the 8-9-8.

The P2s's when on, can compete, but they can also be bland.

Please let us know when that magic moment happens.

Fondest wishes to all!!!

If I were the original poster, I would jump all over this offer of a box split of the premium select Sir Winstons.

I am gonna' have to back this idea. I tend to choose bloodlines with some proven performance. Once the band is remove you are right back to smoking bunched leaves and cigar for special occasion is what you make of it, not what it costs you. In purchasing the 50 can have some cigars to share with friends, ones that you wish to share your special occasion with. Perhaps you can, at the right age, introduce your son to the grandeur of cigar smoking. Would it not be nice to have him smoke his first cigar with you, perhaps from the same box that commemorates his birth?

Bolivar CE's, cab of Boli CG's, JL #2 or Punch SS1's would make fine protects. I even like the Trinidad idea. A 50x cab of Fundadores would grand!!! Good luck and congratulations. - :fuel:

Nice idea - I am thinking about it. Only hesitations are the fact that it's not a 10 box and also that i've not enjoyed the Upmann flavour profile so far (never tried a Sir Winston though). I've just ordered some singles from Czar to get an idea of some of the suggestions here but will let you know!

Hmmm Sublimes - I don't know what to think about these, they had a poor review on this site and i've shied away from MC in recent times because of consistency issues. Even those who enjoy never describe the flavours (What do they taste like - Edmundos, No2s, No4s, No5s ?)

And this Vs. Cohiba Genios - similar recent cigars, price, etc - which one wins?

Enjoy that last one! I've looked around and can't find for sale anywhere - everyone prob bought them to stash away (and then promptly smoked them all like you have!!)

I understand completely. I would not want to commit unless I had sample a few, too. After you test drive a couple, let me know if you'd like to proceed.
