El Presidente Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I was with a bunch of great mates laughing drinking and smoking cigars. They love a cigar but wouldn't know a Belicoso from a Culebra. If you asked them what they thought of Ramon Allones they would say that they have not met him. Ask about San Cristobal and they would ask if it was an island in the Caribbean? I love these guys and over the years we have smoked copious amounts of cigars together from the best of the best to the worst of the worst. They can always pick a great cigar because it tastes good. Ask them about the best cigar they have ever had and they would say "the ones we had shooting in Arnhemland or the the ones we had on the dirtbike tour to the Cape." I would say....you mean the Ramon Allones Gigantes from 02? They would say " yes....the Home a lones" We were in stitches of laughter on the deck the other day recalling great times, telling lies, sharing tales, drinking wine and smoking cigars. They couldn't give a hoot what the band was. It dawned on me that sometimes I forget what cigars are all about.
terrantheman Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Very true words to live by Rob, thank you very much!

Tampa1257 Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Sharing Great times with Great mates brings out the very best.
jroq3956 Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 YES YHE MOMENTS SPENT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE THEE EVENT AND THE WINE AND CIGARS FOR MANY ARE JUST THE THEME MUSIC. NOT FOR THE LOVER OF THESE TREASURES. MY FIRST CIGAR I SMOKED WHEN I BOUGHT MY FIRST CAR WAS A 1986 SIR WINSTON THE MOMENT WAS ONLY MADE BETTER BY THE CIGAR. MY FIRST BOTTLE OF CHAT MOUTON ROTHCHILD WAS WITH A DAVIDOFF PRE EMBARGO. I CAN GO ON AND ON AND PEOPLE WOULD HATE ME. I KNOW THIS THAT IN LIFE THERE ARE GREAT MOMENTS WE SHARE AND FOR SOME THE MOMENT IS ENOUGH, FOR ME AND A SELECT FEW WIYH PASSION AND TASTE WE ARRANGE THE MUSIC,LIGHTS. THE FOOD AND WINE AND OFFCOURSE THE CIGAR TO MAKE THAT MOMENT "THEE MOMENT" AND WE ARE LIKED BY THIS COMMON THREAD THAT SEPERATES US FROM THE REST OF SOCIETY. WH ARE NOT "BETTER THAN" WE JUST HAVE TASTE AND" NO BETTER" I REMEBER EVERY GREAT CIGAR I;VE SMOKED AND THATS FOR ME...

I have been the fortunate participant in many great cigar wine pairngs, many pre embargo cigars shared with passionate enthusiasts, many truly remarkable cigar events with friends which brought together the finest wine, rum, cigars, food and surroundings. Beautiful Music indeed. However there is a beauty to simplicity and I dare not call it naivety. There is a richness to the tapestry of a few friends enjoying each others company while accompanied by good cigars. This is the market HSA has missed. No collectors, no divan, no pretence, simply good people with a love of Cuban leaf, a love of life, the majority of whom pay as much attention to band as they do to a hot dog wrapper. Beautiful music

Not to diminish your initial post in any way - we've all discussed similar here, surroundings etc and I feel the same - but this hits home with a sledge hammer. Your post could be a cigar commercial, should be. What is a cigar add typically - the man in the tuxedo with the slinky woman, a cigar resting on a satin pillow, etc. I can't recall ever seeing one with a group of friends hanging out and laughing it up. Perhaps that might seem to make the cigar secondary, which in those types of scenarios it should be. I agree that in trying to portray their cigars as purely luxury items, some manufacturers have indeed missed the boat.
BolivarSmoker Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Sometimes I forget too! Thanks for the reminder.
bunburyist Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 so true. Agree with Colt as well - much as I enjoy smoking a slim Davidoff at the ambassador's reception ball, the best are always with mates, usually outdoors. One of my favourites was when three of us finally got to our destination on the Devonshire coast, unpacked the 4x4 only to realise...we'd left the bashas, tents and bags at home.... we just lit up and laughed.
sfordham Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Brilliant post Rob. The memories of the best cigars I have had are with my brother on his patio and with friends. For the most part I have no idea which cigars those were.
PigFish Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Ring... Ring... Ring... Mik... the phone is for you Honey! Who is it? It is that Mate of your's... the one in the South. What's he want??? How the hell should I know? Isn't he the one who gives you all the cigars? ... the one that can't fish! The bastid just posted about me on his bloody website; says I don't know **** about cigars. I wonder if he has the new RE's yet. I don't know what you mean Honey... but don't keep him waiting on the phone, its long distance and its not polite. I mean he's never working, drives that crappy motorcycle and all, perhaps he needs some help. AND... don't you be smokin' all his cigars now either! Did you notice his dress last time.... and always smellin' of wine? Yeah... that's Ayala! Yeah... Sweetie! I'll take the call out here where I can finish my cigar. I just lit up one of those Monte Sublimes! These might be better than the Ramon Allones Gigantes.... and I don't want it to go out!
thechenman Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I have to agree with you Prez...you put it quite eloquently. While I enjoy the quiet solitude of tasting a fine Cuban cigar late at night in solace, after the kids have gone to bed...I find that I enjoy the experience much more when smoking with friends. I might not be able to pick up all the varying nuances as well as I do on my porch at night, but the company and conversation more than make up for it.
BobLobLaw Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Good post, reminds me that I need to start sampling more cigars blind. Because I DO know the names and WILL remember them for what they are.
MontrealRon Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 What a great couple of posts, Prez, and kudos to all who have chimed in. I open some of my best bottles with friends and family who have no idea, and couldn't care less, about what they are drinking, but I'm thrilled when I get a smile or a "Hey, that tastes good!" Whenever a friend feels like trying a cigar, it has to be one of my best. Why start someone off on the wrong foot, with a bad impression of Habanos? Now, if I ever had to pass out cigars among enemies... But, most of all, it is because a pleasure shared is a pleasure doubled. After all, isn't making love a lot better than...you-know-what!

jquest63 Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Agreed! Sometimes the moment defines the cigar and others the cigar defines the moment. Don't know if that made sense. One of the best cigars I ever had was the technically lousy Macanudos cigars I passed out and smoked with friends celebrating the birth of my first. It was what I had on hand at the moment to celebrate with and they were great.
Fuzz AI Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I try to always smoke with friends. For me, smoking alone is akin to playing golf alone. There's no-one to talk to, share a joke or friendly jest. Both are extremely boring to me, no matter how good the game or cigar. My wine and cigars are meant to be shared with friends, not consumed alone in solitude. It would be really great if the Czar gang do a little cigar commercial parody vid. Whaddya say Prez?
PigFish Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Thats just mean Piggy I'm still not even for the humidor comment!!! Rob my friend, what I would give for a few of those evenings on the porch with you and the other reprobates!!! I love you Mate! Give Leeza a peck on the cheek for me. -R
Buch0 Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Cant help but comment on this thread after reading all your posts.. It does indeed hit a soft spot. The are times in life when everything just falls into place, times when you are content at where you are at and times you can sit down and honestly say that you love life. I find a cigar in my hand the majority of these times and it is not a coincidence.. These certain moments are what life is all about and seems to make the hard parts worth while in the end. Appreciation is a great thing and that's why I love Habanos the way I do, to me they symbolise an item that is only present when times are at their best and when everything is the way they should be. Great company just puts the icing on the already perfected cake
samb Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Crazy how true that is. I know many people who just enjoy the social scene and talk a cigar can lead to.
kaleehb Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 You're absolutely right! Sometimes it's easy to get lost in the cigar "hoopla" and forget the real great joy of the smoking experience. It's very easy to surround yourself with people who think they know and give a damn about the art of cigars and care nothing about the fellowship. Thanks for reminding me why I love this so much! Very well said!
jfury76 Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Great thread, gentlemen. Reminds me of what is truly important in life. Bravo.
laficion Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 We were in stitches of laughter on the deck the other day recalling great times, telling lies, sharing tales, drinking wine and smoking cigars. They couldn't give a hoot what the band was. It dawned on me that sometimes I forget what cigars are all about. Hi Rob, Well, what can I say? there are days like that One of my great pleasures is to share cigars with friends, You start talking about the smoke and you end up healing the world of all the pain it has. ( why didn't anyone ever think of that solution ?) The power of a cigar is not it's nicotine content but the ties it bonds with other cigar smokers. this is so true that 16 years ago, I realized that I was tierd of smoking the majority of my cigars alone, so, I decided to create a cigar club. when I started the club we were three, my wife, a fellow cigar smoking friend and me, wowww what a group In less then a year we were 28 and today we are 39, give and take members that have left and new one's coming in, However, I do enjoy smoking my cigar in solitude listening to some music and just cocentrating on the beauty of the moment. Now, a majority of the time, I smoke with friends and enjoying a cigar the way it should be enjoyed, laughing, sharing, eating, drinking and evacuating the ,not so enjoyable things in life. We are serious about our cigar smoking, it's just that we don't take ourselves seriously.
