smk819 Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Sunday morning we saw Evan off for his second tour in Iraq. We were worried that he would be sent to Afganistan this time, but he is actually going back to the same area in Iraq that he was in for the last 6 months of his first tour. He is a combat engineer, I tried to talk him into changing to a safer MOS, but he says he likes what he does (blowing things up). This time he doesn't have a lot of experienced people around him, he made rank, and is a platoon sargent. He has a bunch of kids that don't take anything seriously, that will change quickly, the first time they are fired at. So Theresa and I will be stressed for the next year, the last time he got extended to 15 months. I couldn't stop myself from crying tears of joy when he came home.
Froggy Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Wish you the best of luck folks. We in Canada also send - and loose - brave soldiers overseas, in Afghanistan, and we've been in Irak. I totally disaprove of those wars and especially our direct military involment in them. But at the same time, I totally admire the courage and hope for the safe return of all soldiers to their loved ones. I also hope that their work won't be in vain, that it will soon contribute to a more peaceful global village Cheers! Puff a good thick-gauged one with your favorite beverage and forget your worries for a while!

tugboat Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Sargent Evan sounds like a good soldier. You don't get where he's at by making mistakes, I'm sure he'll do just fine. His mother and you sound like great parents. Thank you both for what only I can imagine are those sleepless nights, endless weeks and the days waiting for your son, our heroes to return home to what is no doubt a safer country and a better world for all of us. God bless you both.

jquest63 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 God Bless your son! May he come home safely! Several friends and coworkers of ours are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. He will be included in our prayers.
thechenman Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 My thoughts and well wishes go out to you and your son serving our country overseas. While my Army days are behind me, I have many friends who I went through ROTC with in college who chose to make a career of of the Army, and like your son have made big sacrifices on the homefront serving multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is not only difficult for them, but also for the family members they must leave behind. They face a difficult task, and we must get behind them and show them our suppport. I actually just sent out some cigar care packages to them last week. I believe that the presence and actions of our men and women in uniform can make a difference, and they've got the best training and equipment in the world to help make it so. Your son sounds squared away and as an NCO has the awesome responsibility of shaping up and watching out for the next batch of recruits, as many of them are likely cutting their teeth for the first time. I know you are proud of him, and well you should be. I join everyone else here in hoping for his safe and timely return.
cigarros Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 God be with you Evan and the best wishes/prayers of 3600 FOH'ers. God Bless your son! As one from 3600 FOH'ers I shall see what we shall see standers-by see more than gamesters... Everything be OK! You have a good son! Prayers for a safe return
bolivr Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Stephen, adding my prayers for Evan's safe (and swift if possible) return.
WYPirate Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 God be with you, your family, and your son. Thank him for his service, and thank you for supporting. I too am a combat engineer (21C) NCO, and can understand the apprehension/fear for his safety in his line of work. Him being a platoon sergeant, trust in his ability to give those under his command; direction, purpose, and motivation. If your son follows the Creed, and Be-Know-Do principles, he'll have a crack platoon in due time. War is serious business, and the young'ins will soon realize that. My prayers are with you and yours. "Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom." -Lt. Col. Grant L. Rosensteel, Jr. USAF
