laficion Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Nimes Feria - 27th May to 01st June L'Aficion du Havane & Cigares et Compagnie Two cigar clubs Celebrating the Feria of Nimes For the third year in a row. This has become a major event for our two clubs every year and that is to join together in celebrating the cult of the bull, Ancient traditions with , of course, wines and gastronomy. This year the event took place from the 27th of May to the 1st of June. Cigares & Compagnie arrived from Toulouse on the 27th and the Fiesta began that evening at the Bodega and did not stop for the next 5 days but, before I go on, I should explain what is the Feria and what it's all about One of the most famous events in THE LANGUEDOC since 1952 is the feria of Nimes (one during the Pentecost and one in September). The Pentecost is the most important one. It's a huge 5-6 days folk festival with nearly 1 million visitors every year where bullfights are the highlight of the event. Festivities start on Wednesday with the Pegoulade, a procession with floats, bands, singers, dancers and a pyrotechnic show. Two times per day (11am and 5pm) there are bullfights or novilladas (when a young toreador fights a torero younger than 3 years old). Several popular concerts are organised at place de la Maison Carrée and Jardins de la Fontaine. Besides, local dances take place in bodegas (wine bars) until 4am. Encierros and abrivados are typical activities during the feria as bulls are running into a closed area in the streets. The Nimes feria is not just about bullfights but also an entertainment atmosphere on the streets where people meet together especially when it's time for pastis, wine and music. Nimes is famous for wines and gastronomy. You could appreciate wine savour in cellar or its food specialities like the brandade de morue (salted cod), the tapenade, the gardianne de taureau (bull) or Gariguette (local strawberry). Moreover, Nimes is an exceptional Roman city with lots of vestiges built during the reign of Emperor Augustus two thousand years ago such as the Maison Carrée, the Roman arena, Roman walls, jardins de la Fontaine, Castelum, Tour Magne and the Temple de Diana. The city itself celebrates with live music, dancing, free flowing wine and feasts of such opulence you’ll find yourself full to the brim at most times. I have inclosed some Pics. for you to enjoy. If ever you are in this region and you wish to plung yourself in an atmosphere of Mediterranean influence, then all you have to do is come to the Nimes Feria and experience a most unforgetable moment of your life. anacostiakat Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Great pictures Guy! Thanks for sharing my brother!
Colt45 Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Bravo, Guy! On a side note, I've been to a bullfight and could do without (unless el toro has a true fighting chance ). But that takes away nothing from what looks to be a fantastic time!
El Presidente Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Great post Guy!!!!!!!!! I wish I could be there for the festival next year Cigars...friends...laughter....wine. Perfect! I am a fan of bullfighting, I love the artistry and vibe of the events. I ran the bulls in Pamplona in the early 80's and have fond memories. I would rather be a pampered bul for 3-5 years with one shot at "fame" than a steak on the BBQ
