When I have Sir Winstons and Monarchas in a singles draw - how can I tell which is which?

They used to have different bands. With the Monarca having the plainer band. Otherwise they are both Julieta #2s.

Rob, if it were me, I'd probably take the easy way out and put a tick mark or w or m on the bands of one or the other.

Yeah, i thought the same thing.... but it seems the band is now teh same.

I have a box of 08 Sir Winnies.... and some Monarcha Tubes arrived today that sport the same band.

Its going to be hard to tell em apart if I keep them together.

Thanks mate.

That doesnt surprise me at all unfortunately. :D Yea I would mark the bands if there was going to be a question.

Ya... marking the bands it is going to be.

It got me thinking though... do any other brands produce two like-vitolas within their range? I couldn't think of any others.

Punch - Punch Punch, Royal Selection 11, and formerly the Black Prince and Super Selection No.2 - all corona gordas.

Cheers mate. I have to admit to not having sampled much out of the Punch range.

Monarchas definitely have more of a box press, unless you got the tube version

You should be able to tell from the wrapper ...

That was the same answer I got for the exact same question. It didn't help me much since I don't have any Monarcas on hand for a comparison, but perhaps, Rob, you can take some side by side pictures with the macros on, to show us if there's a remarkable difference between the wrappers? Thanks ahead of time.

Here is the answer provided by shrink:

In my experience the Sir Winstons have flawless, light and tawny wrappers. The Monarcas in box are noticeably more ruddy and darker. The Monarcas in tubos can be dark, veiny, stretched, and downright ugly. But these are just generalizations. It's possible to have some overlap in appearance so without a few specimens to tell, it would be unreliable to assign a particular stick to a category. Especially between adjacent models (e.g., SW v Mon, Mon db v Mon tubo). Confidence would be high making the SW v Mon tubo discrimination though.

Thanks guys.

I haven't taken photos yet, but when I compared them last night I was surprised at how nice the wrapper was on the Monarcha (it was tubed btw). To tell you the truth, if I only had one of each, and had to pick which was which after having pulled them from a humidor I wouldn't bet on picking the right one.

On the subject of wrappers and using them as a way of identification of like-sized cigars - I've got some Cohiba Siglo 6s in my singles humidor and I wouldn't ever pick them as being Cohibas if the bands were removed. They are downright ugly, veiny and the shade is very un-cohiba like.
