So, my cabinet humidor conversion is finished. It was an arduous process. I learned an incredible amount while doing it. Picked up some fun tools, hurt myself a few times, breathed some strange fumes, but all in all, I think it turned out exactly the way I wanted it to.

Best part while building: Seeing it coming together piece by piece.

Biggest difference from my old desktop: Of course, the addition of space. I think I could fit 75 boxes in there if I needed to, probably more. But there is a smell that comes from that thing when it opens up that is just heaven. I can't explain it. For some reason the smells of the cigars and the spanish cedar blend into a heavy smell that I just love.

How I did the seal: The door already came pretty close to contacting on all sides. All I did was shave some spanish cedar very thin, and use small wire brads to attach pieces of cedar around the sides, effectively creating a seal. A magnet holds it shut.

Humectant:RH beads and RH beads only. It holds steady at around 67%. I keep a fan in there to blow around for when there is extra humidity outside.

Based on Smokin Al's recommendations, I shellac'd the hell out of the interior wood before adding in the spanish cedar. That would waterproof the interior cavity. I applied about 30 coats of shellac, and also applied epoxy to all of the edges for extra benefit.

Shelves: Also with recommendation from Al, I used a hole saw to make all of the holes through 5/16" spanish cedar.

Exterior: It was stripped and then Stained/Poly'd. Part way through I decided that I wanted to let the cabinet to take on more of a rustic, antique look. When you see it, it does not look like a humidor. It's not glorious or majestic. It also goes with the decor of my home and my wife liked it enough to let me keep it in the actual house instead of buried away in my office or basement. Bonus!

Check out the before and after!

:clap: That's a great job, Iwish I could do something like that.

With my luck,I would probably nail or glue some fingers to the cabinet. :)

Sterling effort!!!!!!

I know it is not an easy process and many have given up half way through. Well done :)

Thanks, dudes!

Don't mind the tiny collection. I wanted to wait to fill it up a bit more before I posted pics, but I couldn't wait any longer.

Building a library does not happen over night!

I forgot to mention that it would have cost me less to buy a cabinet humidor, as I had to procure many different tools, wood, hardware and of course, time. Spanish cedar boards are freaking expensive. But in the end, I've got this thing I did myself and hope to have it for many years.

Anyone who has ever built anything with their hands knows that feeling, and it is priceless.

I would encourage anyone to do the same, you will be very glad that you did!

That's a great piece your created Jeremy, I also liked the sunfowers when you first posted the find, but it looks even better now. Are you using only beads for humidity?

Yes, using RH beads for humidity. I started out with those, and was going to get an oasis but why would I when the beads hold the humidity so well?

The sunflowers will always be there, only in spirit.

A moment of silence for our fallen friends................

Thanks again everyone.

I have been using only beads in a 4 cu. ft. fridge-a-dor for years without an issue. Simple, effective.

You have inspired me to look harder for my candidate!
