Colt45 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 whatever size cabinet you think you need.....double the size. trust me on this one. Absolutely - go big! Another thing you might want to keep in mind is your overall climate - both temp and humidity, and where you will keep the cabinet. This can help you determine if you will need a cooled unit, or if you can get by without.
Shelby07 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Look for good seals, a box that is lined with spanish cedar or some other mahogany that can hold and buffer moisture and a humidification system that can quickly replace humidity that's lost when a large door is opened. My personal feeling is to stay away from glass doors as you want to keep light and heat out. If you have a basement you can plan on putting the cabinet there as the temp is usually cooler and more consistent. If not, you might look into a cooled unit if your climate warrants it, or, if you're set up for it, a small air conditioner in a closet or spare room. Or you can always go the coolador route. Inexpensive and effective.
Van55 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Two words is all you need to know. "Bob Staebell." I don't know of any reason why he wouldn't sell one of his cabinets to a Canadian. www.aristocrathumidors.com. Give him a call and discuss your wants and needs with him. He's not a hard-sell guy and will give you good advise even if you decided to buy from someone else. I've owned three of his cabinets (2 mini end-tables and one MXT) and have been very, very pleased.
sinnyc Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I agree with those recommending you go large. Nature abhors a vacuum and you'll be amazed at how quickly a seemingly cavernous humidor fills up. I'd give Avallo Humidors a look as well. I looked at both Staebell (mentioned above) and Avallo and spoke at length with both Bob at Staebell and Matt at Avallo. Both are fine people, both make fine products, and both are more than willing to make sure you get exactly what you want. - Tim

The better the climate in your home the more you can spend on cigars and less on the enclosure. If your climate has drastic swings then the opposite is true. If you are looking prefab open a dialog with Bob Staebell as has been suggested; good man, nice humidors!

I agree! I recently got one from Bob and it is awesome. Extremely well made and attractive. The only downside is the money you will spend stocking it.
brian1 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Agree on Bob Staebell, have my Aristocrat cabinet (long since filled to the gills)now for nearly 10 years and it still doing the job good as new. The end table cabinet doubles as a piece of furniture and its as well made as your going to find anywhere. One other tip, order your cabinet with a small set of wheels, becase these weigh a ton and not easily shifted. Ditto! Climate is important to consider when buying a unit. anacostiakat Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Solid advice here. I don't know if Avallo or Aristocrat ship to Canada. It might be pretty expensive. But well worth investigating. I have units from both and am happy with both.
aavkk Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 personally, if you have a decent environment and dont really need temp control like me go with a coolerdor. I currently keep over 65 boxes and cabs of cigars in a perfect environment for under $150. 2 150 qt igloo's with 3 lbs of beads and 2 oust fans in each one... and if your stock contains many cabs than you dont need any spanish cedar lining, as they contain all the cedar you need. My humidors may not be a showpiece but many of the smokes inside them are
gerem Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 WOW, I'm glad I join this forum. Thanks a lot for the info. I'll try to contact Avallo Humidors and Aristocrat humidors for the shipping prices to Canada. I'll check also for the cooler/humidor. Thanks guys
mash Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Bob Staebell ships to Canada, he's done it for me twice. Reasonable shipping costs, no duties as furniture is part of Free Trade. Fantastic humidors, and great service after sale as well.
