Shelby07 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 One of my favorite things to do in Dublin is to go into JJ Fox's and get a nice cigar then take it to a pub (yes, they still have a few with outdoor heated areas) and smoke it with a nice Irish Whiskey. I've mostly stuck with Midelton or Bushmill's 20 year old. Any other suggestions?
Ryan Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I like Power's Gold Label a lot, or Powers Special Reserve 12 year old if the pub has it. Quite popular in Ireland, hard to find elsewhere. Very aromatic on the nose, slightly oily on the tongue and spicy, honey finish. I like it a lot but not to everyone's taste. Cooley distillery, a fairly new independent distillery here, won a lot of awards at last year's IWSC. Have a look at the site, most pubs will have at least some of these, www.cooleywhiskey.com All should have their Tyrconnell single malt. When in Dublin you should check out the Decent Cigar Emporium, also on Grafton Street, about 200 yards up towards St. Stephen's Green from JJ Fox. When are you in Dublin?
DocRKS Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Bushmill's 16 Year - Purple Label.... Powers Special Reserve 12 year is DELICIOUS! These 2 Irish Whiskeys are the thing that dreams are made of.....

We'll be staying in Whitehall. I've been to Decent Cigar Emporium - did not have a good experience there. I'll PM you. I like to stop over at Harry Burns. Not sure exactly where it is... I'm usually not driving because I tend to drive on the wrong side of the road, but after India, nothing can scare me any more.
Ryan Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Got your pm, interesting stuff. Whitehall is the other side of the city to me, I'm near Merrion Square. When do you get to Dublin?
Shelby07 Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 Got your pm, interesting stuff.Whitehall is the other side of the city to me, I'm near Merrion Square. When do you get to Dublin? We're leaving at 6AM tomorrow - going backwards to San Francisco, then to London, then back to Dublin (that's one of the many benefits of flying standby.) Not sure what time we're getting in. PM me a phone # and I'll try to get in touch, depending on our schedule. Don't know if you're married, but if you are you understand the phrase "Just tell me when to be where!"

I also like Red Breast and Clontarf. Clontarf is a much lighter drink but nice all the same and priced moderately over here.
Chaki Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 You might want to try the Redbreast Pure Pot Still as well. My favorite Irish Wiskey.
csgrip Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I agree with the Powers Special Reserve. Great flavors
Ryan Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 I met up with Shelby last night, great fun. His wife and friends and Nicola, my wife were there. We had some Powers Gold Label, some Guinness and some more Powers. Exchanged some cigars, smoked a very nice '05 Mag 50 LE courtesy of Mark. Thanks again! I think somebody there had a camera.
Alberto_Magnus Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 I'd advice almost everything that has been mentioned before, plus a GREAT Irish single malt: Connemara. Especially the Cask Strength...delicious and perfect with a strong cigar, as a Partagàs 898
anacostiakat Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I just learned that my local shop has an Irish whiskey tasting this friday along with their first friday of each month specials! I am looking forward to it. After I come from the dentist. . .
cabaiguan juan Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I like the Tyrconnel. I also like Red Breast and Clontarf. Where do you find Clontarf?
anacostiakat Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Clontarf is good stuff. I've been trying to find it for a little bit and have had no luck here. Where do you find Clontarf? Schneider's of Capitol Hill. . .
Smooth Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 The oldest Jameson you can find is the best for me. Simply sensational. I drank I think a 12yo bottle not too long ago and it was awe inspiring... Reasonably priced too! Side note: younger Jameson can very much overpower a cigar, as always with whiskey older is generally better.
CJNI Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I have to agree with Smooth - I drink 12yo Jamesons all the time (not actually...) and it is way WAY better than the original, which itself is fairly smooth. The 12yo is just incredibly sugary and yet very clean. I am looking forward to matching it with a RyJ later this week with any luck. I am not a black bush fan, original Bushmills is absolutely fine, but I've yet to venture into the older stock. The Kilbeggan from the Cooley whisky company is very nice. I tried it at a tasting during the winter. The temp was way below zero outside my brother's local alcoholoshop and we went in as he knew they were putting a tasting. The whisky was freezing, which made it very spirity and ethanoly. Not immediately very appealing. My bro knew a good 'un when he saw it though and he bought a bottle. We had a 15 minute walk back to his place in the snow, so I put the bottle inside my shirt to warm it up for when we got to his house. After lighting a fire and warming it a bit more, we decanted it into a crystal decanter and started into it while watching filims on his new bluray. It was transformed once warmed up and I keep meaning to buy a bottle for myself. I'm fairly new to whisky in the last 6 months, started on Jameson original, loved it, went to Bushmills original, loved it nearly as much, tried Black Bush, thought it tasted of childhood christmases - the way the house smelled when the olds were having a nip! Tried Jack D - it was not the same as Irish! Back to Jamesons, and then my other bro bought me a 12yo Jamesons and I am totally hooked on it. Living in Ireland helps. I just need a mate to take me through Scottish single malts now....
Smoke_Eater Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 My favorite Irish Whisky is Redbreast. Might want to try Green Spot. Never had it but I hear great things about it.
acidmase Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 If you want to drink a serious Irish Whiskey. Jameson Vintage Reserve
Smoke_Eater Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Just tried Midleton Very Rare, what a great whiskey! Highly recommend.
ChanceSchmerr Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Might want to try Green Spot. Never had it but I hear great things about it. I have wanted to try Green Spot FOREVER! Never been to Ireland yet so no luck as of yet. Is it still only available in 2 locations in Dublin? If anyone has tried it, please let me know, I'd dying to hear how it is!
crisdean Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Get a Jamesons Distillery Edition or any standard Jameson. Solid Irish Whisky but without a serious punch as you might want for a strong cigar.
Trimble Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I strongly recommend that you try Redbreast 12, a great pure pot still whiskey. You may also want to take a look at Connemara Single Malt, which in my opinion is somewhat reminiscent of a single malt Scotch whisky. Both come very highly rated and recommended. Good luck in your endeavors!
Rogers72 Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I STRONGLY agree about the Redbreast 12. Fantastic!
groza Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I like Bushmills 12yo for my everyday whiskey (well, not every day ), it's really mellow and a bit sweet; tastes good at room temperature or chilled.
