In my experience with other vitolas in the Por Larranaga marca, it takes 3-5 years for the well developed Caramel flavor to become more prodominate and not just a glimse. The fruitiness in my opinion is more typical of younger PL's, so hearing Rob say that he feels that they need 12-18 months to me really means they need 24-36 months to be able to really enjoy the Belicoso Extra. As a whole, Por Larranaga needs time for development and any expectations that they are going to be tasting their best right off the truck is a sad and unrealistic expectation. Give them another 36 months and try them again and I believe they will blow your mind with the flavor and complexity. Just my humble opinion.
