tigger Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Sounds a young Upmann Conn. No. 1 to me. Late '07/Early '08 I'll guess.
northo Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 » Sounds a young Upmann Conn. No. 1 to me. Late '07/Early '08 I'll guess. That sounds right on. Just like a couple of 07 Conn no. 1s I have had.
tigger Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 » Not the best cigar to try and guess yet have a go and if possible detail » the reasons why. Didn't see (or at least process) the "reasons why" request, so I'll add it here. A few of your descriptors - clean tobacco, milk coffee, clean but simple sound like flavors typical of the Upmann brand in general, and of the handful of Conn. No. 1's I've smoked in particular. Your reference to needing "3 - 5" years of age strikes me as a hint, as Upmanns often need a long rest in order to shine.
aavkk Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Well unfortunately I will guess VR Famoso. Hopefully the ones you send me smell the goods. I love these reviews Rob, keep em coming.

Your description of earthy, weak milk coffee is reminiscent of how I find this cigar, but with a much more pronounced creaminess for me. I always find that the cigar has a clean tobacco flavors, so it leads me to believe that what you smoked may just be a little sick. Probably a box from early to mid 07.
smokum Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I would guess a Connie 1 myself. Doesn't seem to have a box press. Description sounds like an Upmann.
n2advnture Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 The quality & bunching seems stellar! The "clean tobacco, milk coffee" flavors immediately put me towards the H Upman Conn. #1. Of the ERDM, VR, RyJ & SLR, the ERDM is the only one that might come close but the lack of box press and your aging potential description leads me to believe it's an H. Upmann Connoisseur No. 1. Fun game Pres! ~Mark

I recently smoked a July 07 VR Famoso that looked beautiful but was very muted and underwhelming in the flavor department. Rob's description of this cigar is almost identical to what I experienced with that 07 Famoso.
shrink Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Yes, it is a good-looking cigar. Too bad it didn't fulfill expectations. I'd hate to think that it was a young Famoso. I find these to be rather spicy in their youth. No, I'd have to guess Upmann. Could even be a young Choix. I have had some young Conn #1's that blew my socks off; others have been so-so. The presence of pepper on the finish is another tip-off. I'll go with the H.U. Connaisseur No. 1.
Hugomarink Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 While I guessed the VR Famoso going on the flavor description, the cigar in Rob's pics more closely resembles some 06 SLR Regios I have. Those Regios, however, are anything but weak and currently display a mix of unruly young tobacco flavors coupled with a wonderful richness and complexity that I hope will win out with another 3-5 years.
no3putts Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Ok, this is trial by fire for me, as my palate is still developing and I'm not up to speed on the typical profiles for all marcas as of yet. But, deductive reasoning leads me to the following: We have 5 cigars to choose from, 3 of which typically can be profiled with some amount of nuts. You picked up on none. So, In my mind i'm down to two. Of the remaining two, one is typically characterized by leather, the other chocolate. As such, unless you were having an off day, i'd have to say: Vegas Robaina Famoso. And hope mine don't disappoint:-D
El Presidente Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 I will give the Answer tomorrow but I am impressed with the sleuthing that is going on Let me rule out Connie 1. Just looking at the photo I would have picked it as a likely Connie given its absence of a box press but in this case it is an abberation. Don't less the absence of box press sway you.
smokum Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 VR Famoso SEP 07. I base this on the chocolate nuances and the wrapper. I am sure to be wrong again !
Tampa1257 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 To me, this cigars taste test is what every sample I have tried has performed like, basically lackluster and a disappointment. "The flavours of this cigar do not alter to the very end. Earth, weak milk coffee, simple tobacco. I must say I was expecting much more and am a little let down." I believe this cigar to be a El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme.
toasterhead Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 I am also guessing ERDM Choix Supreme 2006. The 07 examples I have had are darker but had the same light-as-air, unchanging flavor profile. I find them pleasant but uninspiring. One (bigger newbie than me) friend thinks they are God's gift to mankind. Dave
Hugomarink Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Aha! I'm not surprised. As I mentioned, I had an 07 VR Famoso that was almost identical to your experience. The one I smoked really seemed to have nothing to offer -- it was muted and dull from beginning to end. Do you think a cigar that is that "sick" can really rebound with some age? I'm under the impression that a cigar needs to show at least something to indicate it can age well but I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to this aging thing.
yossie Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 » Vegas Robaina Famoso LPM JUN 07 in my FOH locker, I have the same box code one....
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 48 x 127 (5.0") Great looking Hermosos No 4. Good roll, good shine to the wrapper, good construction. Aroma at cold is faint tobacco...nothing more nothing less. Serrated the end to find a good draw and clean tobacco on the palate. Slowly toasted the foot and the aroma was a distinctive sweet chocolate/tobacco. Very nice and very promising. The first draws however were quite muted. Mild Medium in body but a hollowness to the flavours. A little milk coffee....but weak. I torched the burning embers again to stimulate a little more substance. It worked in a way but not convincingly. I purged through the nose and there was a good grip/bite of white pepper but it in no way transferred to the palate. Excluding the weak milk coffee the cigar has an earthiness to it. The smoke is smooth and relatively plentiful. The flavours clean but simple. It intrigues me that the pepper through the nose and the chocolate aroma of the smoke do not transfer in any way to the flavour of the cigar. The flavours of this cigar do not alter to the very end. Earth, weak milk coffee, simple tobacco. I must say I was expecting much more and am a little let down. Visually it looks the part. A few of you picked it and it was a difficult one to pick however smokum (Bob) nailed it. The chocolate aroma of the wrappper is a dead set give away of the cigar. Muted it flavour they may be when young but the chocolate aroma of the smoke is a constant. Well done mate! Vegas Robaina Famoso LPM JUN 07
