shrink
Congratulations on your good taste, O fearless leader! I always have these around, and I agree that the '06s have been generous in both body and flavor. And surely enough peppery spice to grab one's attention, eh? And it tastes like a Punch, to boot. Currently, this is one of my favorite small ring cigars, after the Party Serie du Conn #3 and the RASCC. Thanks for the review.
kirill
Thanks for reviewing these undeservedly lesser known cigars. One reason why they are rarely mentioned might be the extremely confusing vitola program of the Punch marca. Do they deliberately try to make this complicated? Part of a Habanos mystery preservation program? Perhaps you can bring some light into it: is this cigar identical to the Punch Petit Coronas del Punch? And how does it compare to the same format RS#12? I was also reminded of the perla Punch Petit Punch while reading your review, especially the 'not elegant but flavour in spades' and the 'Chinese 5 spices' obeservations. Would you second that? They are just not readily available and soare often forgotten. I agree with your statement on Punch Petit confusion. What I would like to do next week (as I am in Sydney later this week) is to do a blind review of all three (although I should be able to pick the cab RS12 ;-) ). I will then take apart three cigars which came from the same boxes so that we can measure proportions of Ligero/Volado/Seco and then compare. I ask Lisa tomorrow to call up some newer boxes of RS12 and Petit Coronas Del Punch to see if we can get some late 06/early 07 examples to compare to the Feb Punch Petit Corona. anacostiakat
Looking forward to it. It just so happens that I smoked one of my RS12's from '03 Saturday night and was transported!
tigger
Just to add to the confusion, Trevor's site shows Punch Petit Coronas discontinued after 2002, and Petit Coronas del Punch as the existing vitola de salida.
jdbrown
Other sites show them discontinued as well but I do see several vendors carry both.

Thank you s much for your comprehensive review. I am most interested as I smoke petit corons all year long. I have a hard time deciding between Bolivar, PL and Trinidad Reyes. I have never experienced the Punch. You have just added a new dimension to my choices. Excuse my ignorance, but what is an "RS12"? Thanks
tigger
» Excuse my ignorance, but what is an "RS12"? dize, Short for Punch Royal Selection No. 12. It's a mareva cigar in the the Punch stable. Nothing to be excused. We're all still learning, and always will be. :-) Edited to add : When you're thinking PCs, don't forget about H. Upmann... Maybe you can even get Lisa to boxpress the RS12 to make the blind tasting interesting ;-) I'm so glad you volunteer to do the dissections to finally clearly define the blend differences in this petit corona confusion. Although I'm very interested in the results and have wasted more money with a cold heart before, I just can't destroy prefectly good cigars. :-D

Just spoke to Lise and when she orders Punch Petit Coronas de Punch ....Punch Petit Corona is what shows up. I will get to the bottom of it. hoyopr
Rob great review, and the four singles of PPCdP which Lisa shipped me in Oct were of the same box code and of the 3 I've had they have all been much as you've described. I have now made Punch another brand which is gaining a presence in my humi.

El Presidente
Punch Petit Corona OEB FEB 07 Here is a Petit Corona which flies under the radar and I don’t know why. I suspect when people think “Punch” they generally think Punch Punch which is a cigar the polarizes opinion and to be honest it can be a cigar of variable quality in terms of blend consistency. But the Punch Petit Corona continues to wallow in the shadow of the Larranaga PC, Boli PC, M4, Siglo II. It shares the secondary playground with its friend Dip 4 who at least gets the occasional date out and accolade. I know this Punch Petit Corona OEB FEB 07 will be very good. Why? Because I have smoked four superb examples from the same box since last Thursday. A cigar has to have something special when it forces me to walk past all the other petit corona’s in the store time and again because I long for what it delivers….Flavour. It doesn’t really look to be anything special outside of a good looking box pressed cigar. That is until you bring it up to the nose and it gives you a short left and right. Pure barnyard. A little floral note. Promises a short and exciting ride. The wrapper has some subtle oil throughout. The foot is well bunched. Cerated the cap and the draw is a dream with just pure drying barns of tobacco resonating on the palate. Gently fired up the foot to be met by a backbone of power and finesse. Pepper provides the assault but cream and black coffee the balance. Full bodied, thick, viscous. I spent five minutes experiencing the fire and brimstone opening rolling the smoke over the tongue and through the nose. Pound for pound it is a heavyweight of the Petit corona ranks but it is no one trick pony and it slowly but surely settles into a medium body profile. The pepper has been seen off to be replaced by a nice core of creaminess but with a black coffee starch which adds just the right amount of “punch”. The smoke is thick and almost floral, the burn almost perfect. A geat Siglo II may have more class but the Punch Petit Corona has substance. It somehow knows what you need and delivers it in spades. There are sweet spices in the outskirts, cream in the middle, black roasted coffee also in the core to bring it all together. The finish is long, lush and tantalizing. A little citrus twang but almost a Chinese 5 spice mix to the flavour. The heart and soul (creamy black coffee) is still there evolving slowly into a peaty/coal mix near the end. I cannot ask any more from a cigar. Complexity in spades. Satisfying medium/medium full bodied flavour. A touch fuller than previous years but carrying on from the great 2006 examples I have tried. A solid 90 and not to dismiss. OEB FEB 07.
