Bernard Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 A great tournament so far, but Bob Woolmers death is a very sad moment. Perhaps all cricket lovers on this forum will join me in lighting up a fine Havana in Woolmers memory and then we can get something started about the event. Woolmer enjoyed the Aussies, even after THAT miserable semi-final and was respected by cricket lovers around the world. Tonight I will imagine myself in the West Indies with a large rum in one hand, a Havana in the other and watching fantastic cricket. This post is from someone who lives in the land of the winners of the 2007 World Cup. And if this comes back to haunt me, I will take my punishment!!
habanablue Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Those crazy paki fans who were burning effigies (sp?) of Woolmers and calling for his head, got what they asked for unfortunately. RIP Woolmers.
ARRV Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Sir, I was at that semi final and trust me, the best team won. Whilst there are aspects of their play that do not please me, we will beat you saffies. Roebuck had a beautiiful article about Woolmer today. AND surely the world will not be happy if Tas beats the mighty Blues in the Sheffield Shield final. It's just not right. Like Qld winning it eventually
Ginseng Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Would any of you cricket fans be able to distill the rules into a paragraph for those of us who don't reside in cricket-playing countries? I've caught a match once or twice and I've listened to reports on the BBC world news but for the life of me I can't make heads or tails of what the game is all about. Thanks, Wilkey
mgillett Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 » Vive Nouvelle-Zélande I would really hate to see either New Zealand or England win but I reckon my value tip would be New Zealand. They are about to peak at the right time and Oram was in sensational form in Australia in the Tri-Series. Absolutely ripped bowling attacks apart.
El Presidente Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Lovely post Bernard. Rest in peace Bob. As for the rules of cricket in one paragraph? 11 players on two teams, Roughly 6 batters and 4 bowlers (akin to pitchers) on each. You can change the makeup of the side to have more batters than bowlers or more bowlers than batters. All 11 must bat. Everyone bats once so you can't carry too many poor batting bowlers in a team. When Bowling the ball must strike the pitch (turf). The pitch is specially laid and cared for to provide the right amount of assistance to the bowlers (swing/spin/speed) as well as the right amount of assistance to the batters (true line of the ball, consistent bounce). Two umpires In this tournament (World Cup) each team has 50 overs (innings of 6 balls). Team who score the most runs in 50 overs wins.

For some reason I think NZ can beat Australia but cannot beat Sth Africa. Whereas I think Australia can beat Sth Africa. It's all in the mind. Although that 400+ chase by SA at Centurion last year is disconcerting (together with the numerous 300+ chases the kiwis have put over us recently). Hmm they have to drop Watson and play Stuey Clarke (unbiased NSW view;-) ).
mgillett Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Stuey Clarke must play. I think we demonstrated how shallow our bowling attack is in the tri-series. You can't consistently chase down 300+ scores or defend totals when 2 of your bowlers always get thrashed around.
ARRV Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 The guy can actually bat too - in a solid no.8 way. Would go well on those small windies grounds as he likes a slog. Do you now whether they are going to show any games on free-to-air TV in Australia? Hopefully the SA game which is on shortly?
mgillett Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Believe only selected games are shown free to air in the wee hours of the morning. Will have to get Austar one day...
Bernard Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 Now its murder. You go to the world cup to coach your team and end up strangled. Things will never be the same.

Strangulation. If there is one Pakistanian involved in this......they should be banned as a cricketing nation for 5 years. How much disgrace can they bring to the game.

Bernard Posted March 25, 2007 Author Posted March 25, 2007 Before the slating starts, let me take this opportunity to congratulate the Aussies on a great performance. Hayden was sublime and although we tried hard, we could not make it. I think it was a great match and had some of the best batting I have seen in a 1 day international. Both teams have some incredibly talented players and it was a pleasure to watch. We in SA dont have a spinner and this was a problem. It was pretty strange seeing Pollock and McGrath being smacked around the park. This pitch was a batsmans paradise and you had to feel sorry for the bowlers. Now, with tongue firmly in cheek, time for the excuses. The reason for Smith's cramping and the teams collapse was that a number of the female Aussie fans and the SA players had a hell of a party the night before and the SA players were simply to knackered to carry on playing. The SA players will save the best for the final. The cricket is a good distraction from the murder investigation and that will, quite correctly, be the talking point of the World Cup. It is time to get match fixing out of sport. Losing money or a match is bad enough, but a line has now been crossed. Lets see what the ICC do now.

The aforementioned party was well known to be a Seth Efrikan and their moms party ;-) As I understand it, the Seth Efrikens were kneckered in the morning. See you in the final :-D
Bernard Posted April 26, 2007 Author Posted April 26, 2007 Congratulations to the Aussie team. Yet again, South Africa, clearly the superior side, stumbled. Of course the Aussie ability, game plan, planning, mental strength etc had nothing to do with it. When we get a hiding like that, it is not in our nature to accept defeat graciously, so, with tongue firmly in cheek, here is todays excuse. South Africa lost the cricket due to the effect of hallucinogenic drugs which the Aussies managed to get into the air conditioning system at the SA team hotel. Having drugged the team, the Aussies gained entry into the SA players hotel room and injected them with a fast dissolving muscle relaxant, which created a lack of inhibition and generated delusional mental impulses, most markedly shown in the attempt to outwit McGrath, the wily old campainer. Further proof is available on the highlights package. Good luck for the finals!!
Gryphon Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 » Bernard, one word mate: » » » » CHOKE!!! Remember - We are all the same - no matter how we may play that game called cricket - We ALL smoke Habanos.....:crying:
Ken Gargett Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 i must say, having sat through the night to watch the entire thing, the aussies clearly have an enormous mental stranglehold over the south africans. to collapse like that is disgrceful. they were like bunnies in headlights. there is clearly an enormous amount of talent in the south african side but they just can't seem to get it together in the important games against us. to be honest, if steve bucknor had retired years ago, before he became blind and senile, gibbs would have been given out on 4 and the south africans would have been 6-27 and lucky to make 50. the aussies played well but not that well. watson was erratic. hogg bowled superbly but the south africans made it easy - all the top batsmen gone and no one picking the wrong'un or attacking. i think huge blame on smith and kallis. agree with healy, smith should go as capt. to charge like that after 4 balls was gross stupidity and irresponsibity, especially with the massive advantage of a toss win behind them. and the aussies got in kallis's mind with the crap about how slow he is and so on. and he fell for it - hook, line and sinker. idiot. he is a magnificent batsman and had he put his head down and batted through, who knows what would have happened. who said sport isn't mental!

ARRV Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 I agree entirely with everything you said Ken. Further, let's face it, SA truly isn't even the second best team in the world at the moment (contrary to present rankings) - and considering their form through the super 8's were probably fortunate to make the semi's. Upside is that best 2 teams are in the final. It will be close, as the chucker is an awesome bowler and the Sri Lankans are one team that can get in the face of the aussies (other being NZ). I think we will win but hopefully it is close as otherwise it will be damn near impossible to stay awake through the whole night/morning. Further, I think the finals pitch takes pace so should bring best out of McGrath and Tait.
Colt45 Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Here is an article on Woolmer's murder. It's rather long and does not shed much light: [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=woolmer&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1.tld/]Link[/link]
