Ken Gargett Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 i think that is right. sri lanka is the side most likely to trouble us (and i must say that it is much easier to cop a sri lankan victory than the poms, kiwis or yarpies). i'll be firing up something good for the night but if we go down, i do have the consolation of a small amount on sri lanka pre event at 8-1, not that i would ever bet on sports!
El Presidente Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 » Congratulations to the Aussie team. » Thanks Bernard. Now if only our Rugby Union side could develop the mongrel and mental toughness of our cricketers. I would give this cricket world cup up in a heartbeat to see the Kiwi All Blacks defeated in September :-D
Ken Gargett Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 » I would give this cricket world cup up in a heartbeat to see the Kiwi All » Blacks defeated in September :-D no, i want both. bird in the hand. and we don't have it yet. but it is true, the all blacks are the aussie cricketers of rugby. never get anywhere while we have a bunch of no-hearts like baxter and sharpe.

I played against Baxter in colts and also went to school with him so can say it's probably not a heart issue. Unfortunately it's worse - technique / ability issue - the kiwis just have better operators - bigger field to choose from. Not going to change by Sept. I only want the tahs to win a close one this year and then I will be happy = I don't ask for much my lord.... Having said all that - don't underestimate the wallabies, they probably only have to pull it together for 2 games (at most 3) to win the cup and they have the names on paper to do it (if all fit). I am also an eternal optimist when it comes to rugby. i like your odds on Sri Lanka, Ken. You can't lose !!!!
Ken Gargett Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 i suspect that is fair about baxter. he does try. but everytime i think of that ref saying 'they are just too weak' in that game against england, i get waves of shame. that an aussie pack could have that leveled against it! and given my wish that the tahs lose every close one (and every other one as well), we'll see if there is a god. i understand re getting a few games together but we fluked that in the 03 semi. hard to see two miracles. and as for optimisim, i support the reds - can't get much morre optimistic than that, these days at least.

Ken, I shall assume you are with me inthe piggies club. That is, you appreciate the fact that whilst we struggle the hardest we don't always win. Forwards are born to deal with the flashes of the backs (am thinking el pres was a 5/8 ) but we have the best knowledge of the game. El pres please correct me if i am wrong. I still have chills down my spine every time I watch a replay of "that" final where we get penalised and then have non contested scrums. for our friends that would be the last final .. not happy. As a former tight head what can i say . why bother... i feel the pain too ken. I really do. It's almost too depressing so let's concentrate on the cricket !!! I uaed to open the batting. Ken what is your pleasure in tha regard . C'MON AUSSIE

C'MON » AUSSIE y'd think that the prez would be a 5/8 for all the pouncing about and don't touch my hair attitude but no, front row. i was second row or number 8 and happy to admit that i was a lousy one (i'd have struggled to get to a game with the tahs and only about 8th grade level in qld). i too was an opener and also the keeper. i really do not think that there is anything better in sport than being a keeper!
Bernard Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 Thank you very miuch for those kind comments, Ken, Sam. I appreciate the tremendous sporting spirit. Bastards!!!!! The Aussies and the South Africans are very similiar, except of course we have better wine, birds and sports stars. We are also a very kind and gracious nation and give those less fortunate a chance for some glory. Heaven help us if we all get together for a long Cigar lunch leading into dinner. In Cuba. Now thats an interesting idea.
ARRV Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 Lashings of apologies to the pres. Accusing a former front rower of being a back is one of the worst insults known to man. I unconditionally withdraw the comment !
El Presidente Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 » Lashings of apologies to the pres. » » Accusing a former front rower of being a back is one of the worst insults » known to man. I unconditionally withdraw the comment ! After reading your initial post insinuating I was a 5/8 (for North Americans think Quarterback....for Europeans think Striker) ......I was traumatised for days. :-| I worked for a living. Loosehead prop for 13 years then shuffled to No 8 for 6 years and the final 7 years at flanker. 26 years in the pack. Finished Rugby at age 36 before commencing junior rugby coaching at the mighty Wests Bulldogs. This year I am coaching "The Pack" and the boys did themselves proud on the weekend in a ruthless display of "power pig rugby". I like to think that I am developing tomorrows Reds/Wallabies today and I school them with an equal hate for "All Blacks" and "Sky Blue" Jerseys of New South Wales. No poofter back leaves our ruck or maul without the "Packs" inprint on their backs. They seldom come twice but we leave the door open for special treatment when they do Viva la Pack!!!!
ARRV Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I love it !! The pack!! Body height and mongrel. I really should have known better - the rapier wit etc could only derive from time spent in the front rowers club. I progressed the other way - second row to tight head (albeit very early on). Stopped playing a few years ago and now am frustrated tahs fan. It seems to be our plight - when we are going well we lose to Qld. When we beat Qld we lose to everyone else. Couldn't even make it to the games this year as it just gets too depressing. Their skills were just rubbish. How a hooker (i'll let the pres explain) like Frier can get paid in excess of $300,000 a year to play professional rugby and still fail to throw the ball in straight into the lineout amazes me. With all that spare time they have how about you practice your throwing.

With all that spare time they » have how about you practice your throwing. i suspect that dunning spends his spare time, when not at mensa meetings, practising his field goals. that remains one of the great moments, along with the big dell's long range try, the intercept thrown by mulvihill after you buggers poached him and the times spent at Ballymore joining in the 'we want fifty' chants. those were the days.
ARRV Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 and the times spent at Ballymore joining in » the 'we want fifty' chants. those were the days. Remember them well Ken. It will be some time before they are chanted again. Unless it's "we want our fifty dollars back" :-) Carn the tahs PS What do you think about a possible wallabies back line - gregan; larkham; turner; giteau; cross; tuqiri; latham (shephard) realistically there is some real talent there as for the pack well: who knows about the front row - prob go with brumbies front row. Second row: (assuming fit) vickerman and sharpe; back row: smith, palu and waugh that's a decent team (??) your thoughts?

Second » row: (assuming fit) vickerman and sharpe; back row: smith, palu and waugh » » that's a decent team (??) your thoughts? front row dependent very much on injury. if blake and holmes fit, must be considered. with paul. save us if no one better than no-heart sharpe. back row - where is elsom? he's been the tahs best all year (and yet another player that the reds stupidily let go). yet to be convinced by palu. mcmenimen must be considered. we've stuffed around with smith and waugh for years and not only has it not worked well, it stuffed the career of potentially one of the all time great open flankers. smith should be told the spot is his till he needs a zimmerframe. waugh from the bench. latham obviously if fit. huxley seems likely if not. forget this rubbish of bringing back burke. he is no alan langer. once they sort half - gregan most likely unless cordingly fit and challenging. they have to work out where they want giteau. i'd have mortlock. shoehorning cross in so soon i find crazy. turner way too inexperienced. good for the future but may be later in the year.
