El Presidente Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 It happened to ma again last week. The phone call from a good mate who I had not seen for a while. The conversation quickly turned from family to a business proposition he wanted to put forward. I immediately asked if it was Amway or similar and if it was...I wasn't interested. He insisted it was not and I said then sure pop on over for a cigar and a wine which he duly did last night. You guessed it....Amway was unfolded before me as the great business opportunity of all time. Is this a cult? Is deception the only way to get in the door? What makes a once sensible, rational, ethical human being lie outright to a friend of long standing albeit one who he has not seen for a few years? When I asked him these exact questions he simply looked me in the eyes and said the opportunity was simply too good to miss at any price. I kicked him out after telling him to pull his head out his arse and rediscover the essential elements of decency. After the injured pup and other things I was in no mood for idiots. This is twice in three weeks. Does it happen to anyone else?
Wiley Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I wish I could say something like "unbelievable". :-(
korryp Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Not that much any more. 10 to 12 years ago all the time.
Mike33 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 I think everyone is so in love with the idea of the getting-rich-quick that it makes people do stupid things. I've known several friends/family members who believed whole-heartedly in these type of things that it made me sick. Luckily, they all realized that almost nothing worthwhile comes free.
Colt45 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 » This is twice in three weeks. Does it happen to anyone else? Sorry, I can't help but laugh at the scenario as described. I haven't had anyone from amway approach me, but from time to time, a local religious group sends their minions out to canvas the area. Before they have a chance to speak, I say no and close the door. I don't know why, but seeing them come up the walk infuriates me. Maybe it's the black ties.....
El Presidente Posted February 1, 2007 Author Posted February 1, 2007 » What the hell is Amway? Jason....have passed on your number ;-)

mgillett Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Haven't had Amway for a while but I had someone selling "Agel" try to recruit me for their multi level marketing scheme. Works the same as Amway, the more people you fleece the more you make. As my brother always said, "the only thing you make out of Amway is a prick of yourself".
phxkev Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Does it happen to anyone else? I was at the front of a crowded elevator one day last year and after the doors closed I turned around to face the pther passengers and I said: "Now that I have you all here I would like to discuss an exceptional business opportunity you can have with Amway" and the elevator erupted with laughter..... which told me that they all had felt corned by an Amway pitch at one time or another.

A guy who worked for me a few years back sold this crap...some kind of vitamins and power drink garbage...he started telling me how I could retire a lot sooner if I started...I stopped him right there and told him to go piss up a rope. The company Amway has other sneaky little offshoots...the one he tried his pyramid scheme was Star something or other...they sold TV,computer, soap...every damn thing...all you have to do is recruit 7000 people

They now are operating under the guise of "Quixstar" or something like that. I went to one of the "meetings" with my wife at the great behest of a business partner (who I have made money with in the real estate field)...I left early...it was scary. A quasi-religious tone to the whole thing. CREEPED BOTH OF US THE HELL OUT!!! The quixstar.com things is a HUGE set-up...pyramid scheme online. Once people are in they become viscious recruiting arms for Britt Worldwide. DO NOT BACK AWAY SLOWLY. TURN AND RUN. After listening to the Double-Ruby (another story...) testimonials, the wife and I were off like a prom dress... PEACE!

Talk about being totally off the hook, just think of "Tom Cruise" jumping on Opra's couch about a 100,000 strong in this area. Makes you want to run them over with your car!

Black Plague Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 » Is this a cult? Is deception the only way to get in the door? What makes a » once sensible, rational, ethical human being lie outright to a friend of » long standing albeit one who he has not seen for a few years? Well, Prez, here's what wiki had to say... "Several groups including those associated with the anti-cult movement have expressed concern that tactics of AMOs may constitute cult-like activity. Steven Hassan's Freedom of Mind Center lists the practices of AMOs as potentially abusive according to his "BITE" Model of mind control.[38] Other similar organizations that have expressed concern with the activities of AMOs in practice include FACTnet,[39], Cult Awareness and Information Centre (Australia),[40] and others. The Rick Ross Institute keeps a collection of related material in its website. [41] One controversy that Amway was involved with was an urban legend that the (old) Procter & Gamble service mark is in fact a Satanic symbol or that the CEO of P&G is himself a practicing Satanist (in some variants of the urban legend, it is also claimed that the CEO of Procter & Gamble donated "satanic tithes" to the Church of Satan[42]). Procter & Gamble alleged that several Amway distributors were behind a resurgence of the urban legend in the 1990s and sued several independent Amway distributors and the parent company for defamation and slander. After more than a decade of lawsuits in multiple states, by 2003 all allegations against Amway and Amway distributors had been dismissed, with the trial judge declaring "Throughout this and its related protracted and duplicative litigation, P&G has tried to evade the law of the case doctrine, and has squandered scarce judicial resources." [43][44]. However, in October 2005 a Utah appeals court reversed part of the decision dismissing the case against one Amway distributor, Randy Haugen, and remanded it to the earlier court for further proceedings.[45]. As of December 29 2006 the case is still pending.[46]"
CoryOllis Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 My parents sold some amway back in the 60s but it wasn't hard-sell tactics back then. I hate the aspect of modern society that expects non-sense to be accepted. Reminds me of a certain, obvious, controlled demolition... ;-) I see another Soundgarden fan!
Colt45 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Un-friggin'-believable........ Stopped for gas today, and while filling up, was accosted by minion of religious group mentioned above, under the guise of drumming up support for the local NBA team. Told him not a fan and turned away. Thanks for the bad juju.

CigarZen Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 An interesting side note -- **** Devos, the founder's kid, run ran for Guv in Michigan spending $60 million of his own money. He lost.

They almost lured the woman into it but I set her straight.
