Mel Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Nice review. I have had several of these and had tight draw problems with most of them. Next one I smoke I will let it dry down considerable. I am prefering the Tang Monarchs at this time ansd they perform better drier than most.
El Presidente Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Great Review! They look absolutely gorgeous. This is a "Teaser" of a cigar. It always wants to reveal more than it actually does. It has always given me enough flavour and style to come back but never quite enough to make we want to gorge myself on them. In the end I never know whether I love it or not. I always feel ever so slighltly disappointed like watching a young spotsman with all the gifts..never quite living up to there potential. You have made me want to re-visit this weekend!

El Presidente Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Ken. I have always felt a little let down by Winny. I may have used the term"overrated". Not exclusively a term I use for cigars.
Ken Gargett Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 given this is a family forum, i won't quote you exactly but the words 'complete' and '****' may have been involved and then you gave yours to a passing cuban who was the only bloke who hadn't asked us for anything all day.
El Presidente Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 It must have been the only time in Havana that you were sober enough to remember :-D
Ken Gargett Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 » It must have been the only time in Havana that you were sober enough to » remember :-D dear pot noir, priceless - so much for 'on tour...' you have had the local paper nail poor merls for coco-taxi races. you left half the guys in cancun on the way back. last time, you had macho removed from a plane so you could pinch his first class seat. now you have attempted to falsely expose me. this may all be reflected in the votes for 'tour guide of the year'. love and kisses, kettle

The Prince Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 » Great review!!!! » » My apologies for deleting it :-D Probably my favorite Churchill. And is that mold all over the cigars?!?
cananoza Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 Hi Prince. I dont really know what it is? Maybe mold, maybe plume? Dont really know the differences. Comes off quite easily with a wipe on the tissue.

I have to agree with Rob on these cigars. I have had quite a few of these from different boxes, and they have always been CLOSE to be good but not quite. I too feel disappointed with these. For the money, I would rather go with the Boli CG,RyJ Churchill, or Punch Churchill.
Curmudgeon Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 » And is that mold all over the cigars?!? I'd say at least the stuff on the left-most cigar is mold. It's hard to tell, but the small specks on the other cigars might be plume. At what humidity are you storing these?
Ginseng Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Would anyone be able to comment on 2001 production of this vitola?
GoodTimes Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 » Would anyone be able to comment on 2001 production of this vitola? Best cigar I ever had was a 2001 Sir Winston!!!
Van55 Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 The cigar on the far left looks moldy. The others look plumed.

Well Armed Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Definitely looks like you got some mold there. I would quarantine them and try and save them because they look really nice. It would be a shame to lose them to fungus.
dysfunctional Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 i have smoked some from 2002 and they are excellent !! Only one had a tight draw (so far).... buddy of mine also agrees that the box we smoked from was great.... on one stick I had a major buzz.... tingly feeling on the lips that I was told was from the rich tobacco oils ?? But they were great.... got another box from 2002 to age......
dysfunctional Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 speaking of Sir Winstons...... a friend of mine has just about finished his box from 1971...the box is greenish in colour..... must try to get one from him to smoke.....dammed...now cannot concentrate on work
CigarZen Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I was until recently of the exact same mind as Rob re the SW -- I had had very good one, but too many were not quite there. But I am thinking, at least for me, it was insufficient age. Recently got a box of late 00s, from the same factory from where Rob has them for sale, SUA. These are great, imho. I have smoked only 2 from the box, but they are damned fine. Had one recently at a wild game dinner and I found myself looking at it, thinking what a fine, fine cigar. It showed rich, complex flavors and was not at all mild. Rather it was a hair or two shy of strong. I would put these in the highly recommended camp. Also got some 02s to age.:-P
Colt45 Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 NOV 00 *The first one I tried was unsmokeably plugged - I reamed it with a skewer, but to no avail, so I grabbed a second..... Construction: nice - very firm, did have a slight hard spot near the head. Wrapper: greenish tinged medium brown. Smooth, with minimal veining, and a light sheen. Very nice to look at. Draw: a bit tight, but nothing like the first attempt. Good smoke volume with a very good burn. I'm hoping the rest will draw a bit better. Taste: light , clean tobacco, with overtones of anise and subtle honey. It never really wavered from this profile, but did become quite peppery near the end. Though not overly complex, I really enjoyed it. I'd call it the fine Champagne of cigars. It reminded me of Mr. Gargett's discussion of pairing Champagne with cigars. If I ever try it, this will be the cigar I go for.
Colt45 Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 Tried another from the NOV 00 (SCO) box. Jekyll and Hyde. The first few I tried were basically overfilled, with very tight draws - a couple were discarded. This one was totally the opposite. Pre light showed a very nice draw - promising. Post ignition showed the perfect draw. Flavor from the get go was full on sweet and sour spice, and this remained the core flavor throughout. There were fleeting hints of dark cooking chocolate, but spice aside, the main element was a clean, dry stewed fruitiness. Past the halfway point, it became quite herbal/grassy, but not harsh, and this really just added another dimension. This element only lasted about an inch, and it returned to it's original flavor profile. Up to medium in body, this one was maximum in flavor. If the rest of the box is close to this one, I'm happy!
anacostiakat Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 My box is from '03 and I have smoked one out of it. I thought it was a great cigar. From a price perspective though I would probably go with the Monarch (A/T or not) . Staying in the line of course.
