Mike33 Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 First review, hopefully it won't be to awful ;-) Box Code: OEB JUN 06 Purchased about 2 months ago. The first cigar I tried was plugged pretty badly and I only got hints of what this cigar truly was. So, I decided to give 'er another shot the other night. The cigar is quite beautiful, dark with a light sheen of oils on the wrapper. It was firm throughout and after I chopped off the cap, I felt dread:-( The cigar was very tightly packed, but with my brother's help and a toothpick, we got it to draw perfectly. Not too tight, just about perfect. I've got a feeling I should have used the toothpick with the first one, and it would've been ok:-) So anyways, the inital light went well. Very good spice to this cigar with some cedar in the inital 1/3. The cigar had a creamy taste to it and the flavor stayed with me for some time after I exhaled. The ash stayed strong for about the first 2 inches before falling off. The second third began a little rough, the burn becoming ragged before some touch-ups fixed it. At the same time, the was a little bitterness untill the burn straightened out and then it was back to some great flavors:-D The last 1/3 was mostly cedary with some spice and even a little vanilla coming to my palate. Finished with a nub and a smile after a good hour-long smoke:-) Overall, very good cigar. Haven't heard too much about this one, but with my limited experience, this is a very solid cigar that seems like it has good potential for aging. Will wait a couple more months before trying another.
shrink Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 First review, hopefully it won't be to awful ;-) Not too shabby, Mike. Not too shabby at all! Thanks for sharing your impressions of this recent EL. A good and thoughtful review. I doubt that your examples were "plugged". Probably just a little too wet, and still in shock from their trip across the pond. I got a box recently, and haven't tried one. I probably won't even sample one for a year or more. Even though these are made with two-year old tobacco, it's been my experience that the EL's should be laid down for at least a couple of years or more. The previous D3 EL, another corona gorda, was made in 2001 and is only now coming around. Keep those reviews coming, Mike!
anacostiakat Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Yea thanks for the review. I too have an untouched box that will remain so. The 2001s are magnifico IMHO.
bassman Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 The only EL I ever had that tasted good fresh was the Hoyo Piramides. Definitely forget about these for a couple years & you'll be rewarded.
El Presidente Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Nice one Mike Get these babies down to 65% RH for a month or two. Shrink is right, the LE's have a habit of being released wetter than normal and I don't know why.
El Presidente Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Mike. I tried a Partagas Serie D No 3 LE yesterday on the deck outside my office. It sucked big time. Way too much pepper, full bodied, no complexity. It reminded me of some of those NC cigars produced which were all power no finesse. The problem was that this cigar is still way too wet. It has a thick wrapper leaf and feels in the hand like it is retaining water. We are running our humi at 65% RH and 60 F. I have placed a second one outside of the humidor in the refrigerator to remove some moisture before I try it again this afternoon. Will follow up the review.
Mike33 Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 Rob, Thanks for the follow-up. I didn't mention in my review, but you were right, it was very full-bodied. Too much spice. I had the cigars stored at 65% but it was probably still too wet. I think I'll wait untill next spring before another one. I'll also make sure I let it sit a day or two before trying. :-) Can't wait for your second impressions!!

I really enjoyed the D3. I've only tried two but in both of them I noticed a distinct, creamy, buttery band about half an inch to an inch from the beginning of the cigar. It seemed very out of place among the flavor profile of the cigar. I'm twitching to order a box. I smoked one last night and I'm about to go outside with one now, I'm trying to see if I REALLY like them enough to order more. Here is a review I posted on another forum: http://www.cigarsmokers.com/showthread.php...artagas:waving:

I couldn't finish it, and as posted earlier I'm a sucker for spicy/peppery cigars that are smooth and creamy, as is the D3. So, I had to revisit is a couple weeks later since it got the best of me....much better, still a powerhouse but milder than the previous. I'd say lately they are stronger than what they were maybe, 6 or so months ago. I'm really trying to keep my hands off them. I want another box to keep closed so I can continue smoking what I have. In my opinion they are excellent. I've picked up lately oak wood, cedar wood, Partagas vanilla cream, and pepper and spice. That is pretty much the taste profile I look for in a cigar.
Professor Twain Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Great review. Thanks for giving us early tasting notes, even though we know that these will be much better with age, it is always useful to see how they are smoking young. I have started keeping one of my desktops at just over 60% humidity (of course, within the precision of the digital hygrometer) and for the most part only smoking cigars that have been there for at least a week. It really cut down on any trouble that I had with tight draws. This sounds like a great one to bury deep and try in a few years--if temptation can be resisted.
El Presidente Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 » » Any comments on your second one El Presidente? Give me until tomorrow :-)
Mike33 Posted June 14, 2007 Author Posted June 14, 2007 Man, what was I thinking lighting that baby up so young :-D I had one several weeks ago and it was almost a completely different cigar. Light hints of pepper with a sweet, honey undertone throughout the smoke. It was thoroughly enjoyable
Well Armed Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I have a box of PSD1 EL's and the first ones I tried were like full pepper and nothing else. Downright awful! 2 years later at 65% and they are turning into beutiful complex smokes. They are dark as night and greasier than a lobbyist's palms. Put them in deep storage and just forget about them for a long time. You'll be glad you did. BTW I just smoked the 1st release PSD3 EL last week and it was excellent. A fine finesse balanced by good power. I hit this one at its peak I think.
SmokinLightning Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I have a couple boxes of these I plan on ignoring for a good long while. They will definately need some time to come around, but i'm betting it will be well worth it!
HeavySmoke Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Odd. I tried one this weekend and I loved it. Definetely the best 06 EL I have smoked out of the group offered for the year. I run about 68% RH. :-|
El Presidente Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Just finishing mine now. March 06 Box code. I am more confused than ever regarding this cigar Most until now have been spice laden powerhouses....completely unbalanced in a way that you could assume it had attention deficit dissorder, way too young but full of potential. Well this cigar was disppointing to the extent that it had zero spice and was mild medium in body. I will be buggered if I know why. There were some lovely cocoa bean flavours and a touch of wet firewood and coffee.....but is nothing like I have experienced before in this cigar. If I didn't know better I would say it was in a classic sick period.
lepatrik Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 I have two boxes of these stashed away, hopefully they will stay stashed away for many more years to come so they then can release their true potential
CoryOllis Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 » Nice one Mike » » Get these babies down to 65% RH for a month or two. Shrink is right, the » LE's have a habit of being released wetter than normal and I don't know » why. Most likely correct. Great first attempt! Keep 'em comin'!
BinDerSmokDat Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I'm smoking one of these right now. Over time the wrapper has puckered ever so slightly; like someone who has recently lost a little weight. But the color and feel is near flawless. My box is set at 68%RH and this is probably a tad high for Cubans, but I find they age well for me at that setting. This particular cigar is giving me cedar, spicy hints of pepper and an underlying hint of cinnamon baked goods. I can go back in time and update a post about these from 8 years ago...but I can't go back in time and buy all of these that I can.
