I had a question as to the \"fruitiest\" Cuban cigar.

By Fruity, he did not mean "Citrus"

I said the R&J Exhibicion No 4 (Cab ) and the new R&J Short Churchill.

These two cigars have a certain cherry sweet edge to them.

Any others?

Fruitiest cigar smoker???? Well I just won't go there Rob!

This depends on the fruit; you mentioned cherry. As far as cherry is concerned; I think the prize goes to the SLR line. All of those cigars have a characteristic chocolate aroma and a distinctive black cherry taste.

For overall fruitiness me thinks the JL line has the most overall fruit tones. I have found JL cigars almost "thirst quenching" and in many cases refreshingly sweet. -Piggy

To me, the cigar with the most fruit qualities is the whole Ramon Allones lineup. With the RAG and 898, I get the stewed fruit. Big pan on the stove with peaches, cherries, and raspberries simmering away. Damn.

RASS has more of a sangria-ness to it. To me the RASCC has the least amount of fruit quality than the rest of the RA line. More woodines, but more in line with the RASS than the others.

I went throught 2 boxes of 98 Exh#4 (dress box) and they definately had some tropical fruit notes to them. They are the only ones I have smoked that were dominantly fruity. I have had others that have subtle fruit notes here and there, but that can come out in many different cigars.

IMO, I taste a lot of citrusy flavors in certain Punches, like the Punch Punch and recently in a Super Selection No. 1 I had. I really enjoy getting one that still has a lot of that citrusy, grapefruit-lemon-orange twang to it.

I wonder what, if anything, you guys drink while experiencing these fruity flavors. I used to drink port or scotch when I smoked NCs. I've found that I don't want to risk affecting the flavor with Cubans. They usually taste so damn good that I only want ice water to keep from drying out too much. I wonder if pairing the above mentioned cigars with wine would bring out the fruity flavors more than whiskey, or coffee or water. Any thoughts?

Me personally, wine is too dry for cigars. Just something about it doesnt mix. I am an avowed rum junkie. I almost always have a rum drink with a cigar. If you aren't a fan of rum straight up, I suggest mixing with orange juice. A very good drink to accompany a cigar. Also have been doing the Champagne and cigar pairing with beautiful results!:-D

delighted to hear about the champers and cigar matching. any particular matches you can recall?

that said, i am in line re the rums. don't think anything quite matches a good mellow rum and i think they are extremely versatile.

muscats/tokays and good ports i like (and with cigars).

tried laphroaig (spelling??) last night with many different cigars (hence much malt though also some corked port, lots of beer, riesling, pinot and quite possibly other things - undoubtedly the reason we were able to solve not only the middle east crisis but what to do with cats and even had time to resolve all female/male differences - if only any of us could remember these solutions, we'd be rich and famous). the really peaty character of the malt suited some cigars far better than others (i'd tell you which but that knowledge resides with those missing solutions).

I mostly stick to port in the wine department...but I've heard some people say a good Zinfandel or Syrah/Shiraz (particularly you Aussie's robusto Coonawarra variety) can compliment a cigar. You probably want to stay about from really tannic wines like Cabarnet.

Now rum...that stuff was just MADE to go with a cigar. And I also like scotch and bourbon with full-bodied smokes.

I'm also curious to know what champagnes would go well with cigars.

I agree with the guys about red wine - cigar smoke tends to bring out the tannins

in the wine. I have found that a crisp white is a nice match. It holds up, but the

two don't interfere with each other.

I still haven't tried the champagne match yet, but look forward to doing so.

Ken,

Most recently I have had an '02 RAG with Veuve Clicquot Brut Rose. Man that is good stuff. I go to Costco and the Champagne there is sometimes 25% cheaper than in the regular stores. Last time I bought a case Korbel Brut - great everyday Sparkling Wine @ $9.50/bottle and a case of Veuve Clicquot Yellow label.. Also more recently tried a '97 Monte Especial no 1 with Perrier Jouet 96 Flower bottle. And I may catch **** for this, but I sometimes mix some OJ with the Korbel. Very good sweet/dry that goes great with a LGC Med 2.

» Austin, another decent inexpensive sparkler to try (if you haven't

» already) is freixenet.

:rotfl:

I didnt want to use that word...i skated the issue at hand. Hey, at least there was no flower floating in it!

I have tried the Freixnet, just once and dont remember the taste. Will try it again.
