i'm quite fascinated by the number of times comments appear about how members smoke more, or enjoy their cigars more, in summer than winter. i must say that i am the reverse. it seems a wintery thing to do - that doesn't mean i don't enjoy cigars in summer but i think that winter does add an edge. of course, our winters are like most people's spring at worst.

anyone any thoughts on why so many people prefer their cigars in summer?

I would hazard to guess that many of the members smoke outdoors. They don't smoke as much in the winter because they don't want to freeze their a$$es off for a cigar.:-P Of course, when I lived in San Antonio, there were very few days/nights that were too cold for a cigar. Mild winters there.

I was the same way. I don't smoke in the house and when it was too cold, I usually just went without most of the time. Then, we built the smoking room on the back of the house. Now, I can enjoy a cigar anytime of the year.:-D

Those would be my thoughts.

Here in PA the winters can be brutally cold..so smoking in the winter is not as appealing as enjoying a nice smoke on a warm summer night. Personally, my favorite time of year to smoke outdoors is the fall. Our house backs up to a large open field so I like to sit on the patio and just enjoy the scenery...;-)

I also live in an area where the winters are just too cold to truly enjoy cigars,

as I only smoke outside as well. It's no fun to have to bundle up, looking like

the michelin man, only to have your smoking hand freeze off anyway.

I also think that drawing really cold, dry air through a warm cigar has an adverse

effect on the flavor. I've tried it enough times, and have never had a great,

flavorful experience under those conditions.

This past winter was decent enough that I managed to smoke more than usual.

But in past years, over the course of a winter, I've gone months without a single

cigar.

On the flip side, I don't really enjoy smoking on really hot, humid summer days

either. It's the last thing on my mind in that kind of weather.

Summer allows you to get outside (almost a pre-requisite in Sydney these days and at home) although as our winters are very mild by norteamericano standards a sunny winters day out the back is fantastic. Get a jumper on, crack that bottle of scotch or shiraz and lounge! I personally prefer spring and autumn (fall) as when it is too hot I am too uncomfortable to smoke and enjoy a cigar.

Weather mostly in the 30's and a lot of rain. No place to smoke inside.

Spring and summer are nice. 70's and sun.

Exactly, it can be quite cold in Baltimore for smoking outside. This time of year is great though - 60-70's - wonderful weather for relaxing outside with a smoke.

One of my most memorable Cigar moments was smoking a Trinidad on the terrace of my Hotel in down in Tasmania. The temperature was a rather brisk -5c. It felt magnificent, probably something to do with the fact I was quite inebriated at the time.

it may surprise members but, even though i live in queensland, i hate the heat and it puts me off smoking. our winters are relatively mild - will have a few days where the mercury gets in single figures and even occasionally close to zip but that is rare. from around may (used to be april but damned global warming) to october, we have the world's best weather. then crap. when the air has a nip in it, perfect cigar weather.

I smoke inside and will crack a window and run a smoke eater so the weather doesnt affect me as much. However I do enjoy an outside smoke when I can. Which is mostly spring and fall. Either too cold in winter or the skeeters are eating you up in the summer! :-(

I do usually smoke more in the summer, but, not alot more. In the summer I run the air purifier and I'm good to go with a nice smoke indoors.

I believe a cigars aroma smells richer in the warm summer air as well.

+, in the winter here in Oregon, I'm usually stuck in the garage because of rain, which isn't what it's cracked up to be. ;-)

The wost time and place to smoke a cigar is in the sun on a hot day. I have a pool out back but I much prefer to sit in the shade to smoke. Here in TN it does get cold but I smoke all year long. We have had much discussion on the smoking in the cold and limited places to do so but I'm with Ken on this one heat kills the enjoyment.

One added note to another post about the aroma is better in warmer weather. I too have thought this was true until one winter deer hunt at 18 degrees F when the Cohiba Reserva Corona was one of the best of my whole life. Hot or cold not so much of a bother but Wind can not be tolerated

Not much else to add, but to echo the comments that if one primarily smokes outdoors, winter here can be far too cold to enjoy a cigar. Most cigars would burst apart if attempted to smoke on a typical winter day in New York. I also find smoking in high temps to be unpleasant. Spring and fall are my ideal seasons for outdoors smoking.

I too smoke mostly outdoors, so summer smoking appeals more to me....but, it gets very hot and humid here in the summer and sweating and smoking a soggy stogie isn't appealing either;-) ...so i'll vote for great spring weather like we're having here now:-D

Well, Im a puss when it comes to the cold. 50 deg. and I need a parka. I love to smoke in the spring here in FL. Couldnt ask for better weather. The dog days here are straight humid. But...nothing a few rum drinks couldnt take care of. I smoke pretty much the same winter/summer. I smoke in the garage with a heater if its too cold. Outside mostly though. I love a very light breeze and sunshine with my favorite cigar, favorite drink and my favorite wife...not that I have 2.

Ahh, the weather in the summer is ideal for sitting or lounging on the deck and having a nice smoke as opposed to outside on chilly nights. But all this will change soon with the Csonka Smoker Cloaker, a ceiling exhaust fan and converted smoking room.

Not allowed by the wife to smoke indoors so I prefer smoking when the weather is nice and mild outside. So one must consider the temp before going outside for a smoke.

Winters in NY are also brutal sometimes going as low as 23 Farenheit at ni night and 34 Farenheit during the day. The only time I smoke outside during the winter is when I have to shovel snow from the driveway.

Summers here can be usually 95 - 105 Farenheit during the day which is tolerable for me to stay outside for an hour or two.

for me, the very coldest days in winter are not as miserable as the hottest days in summer. you can ALWAYS put on more clothing, or get close to a heat source. in summer, however, all you can do is strip and sit on a sack of ice. i rarely smoke in the direct sun in summer.

these discussions lead to a comparison of cigars that are primarily smoked on a seasonal basis. for me, i tend to smoke a greater number of lgc, fonseca, and sancho panzas in the summer. alternatively, i tend to smoke heavier vitolas like the ryj cazadores and bbf in the winter.

i am sure its a mental thing.
